ok, well let set the boot order to CD-rom as the first device, put the xp home in the drive and cross your fingers

we did get the dos disk to boot, but that is running off of itself

Civilian 0 Light Poster

i was under the impression we couldnt get anything to boot off of the CD

Civilian 0 Light Poster

hmmm well since we can boot a dos program from floppy lets try to run the XP install off the floppy drive http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8fe6868-6e4f-471c-b455-bd5afee126d8&displaylang=en this install requires 6 floppy disks, otherwise we'll see what DMR has to offer

oooh thats not good for a laptop this isnt a removable HD by chance is it?

Civilian 0 Light Poster

Welcome to the Battle DMR

ok thats a start, in that area it should list if there is a HD to boot from is there?

Civilian 0 Light Poster

hmmmmmmmm we'll get this working yet. Ok do this for me go into your BIOS and just verify that is has a detected HD post back with if it does or doesn

Civilian 0 Light Poster

could you please clarify for me a little more,

For some reason my internet option is frozon on MSN Homepage and will not let me change it

Are you talking about your homepage in general, like you cant change it? or dont know how? and

Plus, I can`t get sbc yahoo page to just pop up unless I go to inernet explorer and then it is slow even after I get to my sbc home or email page

do you mean you cant get IE to automatically start on the SBC homepage?

post with more details and ill be glad to help

Civilian 0 Light Poster

it should be at the main screen it will have a listing of several options on the left there should be load fail-safe settings. If not then you may not have the option in your BIOS. But lets see if we can boot to DOS go here http://www.ntfs.com/boot-disk.htm
create the disk, make sure you set to boot off of FDD first

Civilian 0 Light Poster

i order all my parts through www.newegg.com usually pretty good deals there

Civilian 0 Light Poster

ouch, well lets hop into the BIOS and make sure you are running on the fail-safe setup not optimized, Also just to be clear you cant even boot from a floppy?

Civilian 0 Light Poster

Me is a smaller O/S in terms of file size so its a faster install, so it has less of a chance of setting off whatever the freeze is I.E. bad ram
That on the other hand is just speculation

Laptop, pentium III, 256, purchased from a business bankruptcy sale. has both xp professional and home os on it

I have a totally functioning desktop with xp home, that I can write cd's on for any downloads to fix the problem............I'll need to do any fixes via the xp home.

so what i read was you have a laptop with dual boot either XP pro, or XP home, Also to my understanding XP pro wont boot, and we cant boot from any devices I.E. CD or Floppy, AND the XP home boot sector works is this correct?

Ok well there is another way to get to the recovery console, boot into your windows home edition as administrator grab your xp cd and hope for the best.

To install the Recovery Console, follow these steps:
Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
A Windows Setup Dialog Box appears. The Windows Setup Dialog Box describes the Recovery Console option. To confirm the installation, click Yes.
Restart the computer. The next time that you start your computer, "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" appears on the startup menu.

bring up the recovery console it will prompt you to select the windows boot to repair, go to the broken one (drrr) and run chkdsk /f and or fixboot

good luck!

Civilian 0 Light Poster

it tells you to reboot with anything in the CD drive? go to your bios settings and change the boot order so that CD comes before HDD (i think standard order goes like this FDD, HDD, CD. so just go CD, HDD, FDD)

Im gonna have to say the all time best ever Anime series is Neon Genesis: Evangelion such an amazing series even though they messed it up when they dubbed it so watch in japanese with subtitles oh and buy the movie too or youll hate the world becuase of the original ending

Civilian 0 Light Poster

Well here is where i would start, pop in an XP pro CD and get to the recovery console, at the console type in chkdsk /f. if that doesnt fix it go back to the recovery console and type fixboot.

Civilian 0 Light Poster

It sounds like that "freeze" may not be the culprit. it doesnt seem to be a software issue being as you have already tried a new HD. I built a computer a few months back and the computer would freeze up on me randomly, i narrowed it down to a bad stick of ram. Since you have an on-board vid card wich doesnt have its own ram, i would also grab a card from another computer and disable the on-board card. Also do you have your bios set to shutdown or warn you when your CPU reaches a certain tempurature?

Civilian 0 Light Poster

by boot recovery do you mean you ran FIXBOOT from the recovery console?, if not thats where i would start. pop in the XP CD, go to the recovery console and just type in FIXBOOT.

Civilian 0 Light Poster

try stripping the computer back to bare essentials, I.E. only one stick of ram no modem or NIC, just the bare minimum, see if it still crashes then, if it doesnt, then add stuff in one at a time until it does crash and then youll have your culprit, ALSO go into your system bios and make sure you arent running on the optimized settings.

What DMR is saying is look for the registry key {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} you can either navigate yourself there VIA

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

or open your registry editor hold CTRL + F to do a find and enter this {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

Usually nero will be running in the taskbar (lower right side by the clock) you should be able to right click on it and select close, exit, shutdown or something to that affect. To be sure it is disabled check your task manager to see if it is still running in the background.

What happened when your computer crashed the first time, when you were playing the game? Ive never heard of running a game thats has higher requirments than your PC to crash or cause long term problems such as this. How old is your computer, it sounds like your HD may have a bad sector on it.
Also when you are installing XP did you create a partition for just XP?

This might sound silly but how do I change the settings from Master to Slave or vice versa, is it done through the BIOS Setup or on the back of the DVD-ROM. I am running a Windows 2000. :o

There are jumper settings on the back of the DVD drive, look at the top of the drive and there should be a diagram showing you three different jumper settings Master, Slave, and Cable Select. All you need to do is take the plastic jumper (located in back near the power plug) off of its current setting and switch it to the pins that correspond with slave as per the graph on top.

Hope it helps

I had the same problem as you with the sudden freezing with no seeming pattern to it, i narrowed mine down to a bad stick of ram, remove all but one stick of ram and see if it happens again, if it does switch out that stick with another boot and see what happens. Hope it helps

It may also be worth while to check you link speed and duplex and make sure its set to auto detect
