My late father, bless him, never drank, never smoked and was a very fit man. A racing cyclist in his youth, and cycling fanatic right up into his early seventies, he used to ride a racing trike to work every day, 10 miles across London, up steep hills, through heavy traffic. His idea of a holiday was a 500 mile bike ride.

Got bowel cancer, died from complications of the surgery at the age of 74.

Turns out that bowel cancer is a genetic thing in my family, I officially suffer from HNPCC Syndrome (Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colorectal Cancer) which is carried on the male side of the family and increases my chances of developing colon cancer before the age of 65 from something like 8% to more like 80%.

Some things in life you just have to suck up and accept I guess.

On the plus side, at least I get monitored with colonoscopies every year so if/when I develop the cancer it will be spotted very early and can be dealt with easily. Smokers don't get that luxury and by the time the symptoms of lung cancer present themselves it is often too late for a successful cure.

Well Jan 7 is pretty certainly a non-starter as it will take a little longer than that to organise.

London is almost certainly the right venue though.

I would love to buy myself an Aibo for Xmas but if I spent a grand, or thereabouts, on a toy dog I suspect I would not be around to enjoy it in the New Year.

Unless I also spent more than a grand on 'her indoors' so she was too focussed on the shiny diamond bracelet to notice the shiny robotic dog :)

I suspect that the 'balck economy' and the 'real economy' are rather closely related in many an Eastern European country, to be honest.

That's a good start, it allows people to go take a look if they like what you say, for example.

Anyone want to buy me an Aibo for Xmas? Not being picky or anything, but it would have to be an older one which looked more like a doggy and less like K9.

The real problem is that the main players in the spam game are, seemingly, above the law.

Just as the main players in any organised crime gang tend to be rather hard to catch, even though law enforcement are well aware of who they are and where they are.

I suspect the fact that many of the major spam gangs are based in Eastern Europe doesn't help much, as certain countries here have a very poor reputation when it comes to helping in the investigation and arrest of suspects in computer related crime. Given the other problems many of these countries face, I guess spam is not high on their list of priorities right now.

Become active in as many other medical forums as possible, without plugging your own, and build a relationship with knowledgeable and interesting folk. Ensure your own forum is mentioned in your signature, if allowed at those other forums, and introduce it when chatting to the people you have befriended.

Despite what your sig link says, there is no simple fast way to make money online, and there is no fast way to populate a forum that will ensure it has longevity and value. It takes time, and lots of effort.

I use Copernic Agent Professional from copernic.com for my online research needs. Lets you refine and filter by numerous categories, and is definately a tool that goes beyond the basics of Google. But then it does cost money...

DaniWeb is a community, but it still costs money to operate. Without the business angle there would be no community, such is the way of the world.

Remember that DaniWeb is totally free from the user perspective, whereas many similar IT support communities will charge a membership fee or only provide help on a pay as you go basis.

Personally I am much happier making the odd commercial sacrifice in order to keep the system free of charge, than going down the road of paid memberships only.

I agree that in an ideal world there would be no site ads, forum posts would be emailed in full to anyone who didn't want to participate, yada yada yada. But for all the above reasons, it ain't an ideal world :)

I hate this time of year, as there are always loads of chocs, cakes and yummy looking things around. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately for my figure, I cannot eat any dairy or yeast products which rules pretty much all of them out of bounds.

Little things make all the difference. Even when some organisation has been cuasing me grief all year, the fact that they send me a card and a USB memory stick for Xmas makes me forget all that and think they are lovely.

Ooh, which part? I was dragged up on and around the Old Kent Road (cheapest square on the UK Monopoly board, for our US friends), went to school in New Cross (Askes) and lived most of my life up to the age of 18 in Brockley/Crofton Park.

My gift from Google is the same as usual: ignoring my emails and requests for information from the PR people.

I don't think they like me.

I did get a case of wine from Pocket-Lint though, which was nice :)

Oh, and DLink sent me a peculiar LED torch thing that plugs into my car cig lighter socket, although why I need another light inside the car is beyond me...

Nor me. Only advertising related problem I run into every now again here is when a Google adserver goes down and everything goes into that awful browsing through treacle mode :)

What problem? I don't see any mention in your original posting of a problem.

That said, this isn't the right forum for dealing with support questions, it's just for saying hi really. So probably best if you let us know what the problem is and we can direct you to the best forum to get the help you need. How does that sound?

I first started in 1988 at the age of 17 when I saw The Pogues in concert; it was an amazing show and I got very high from my first cigs. I did not think much about it then-- but I find it is all I think about now at times, at least at certain points in my day :cry:. What a horrible addiction. :sad:

I hit the Digg mainpage with a blog entry here last month and had over 21,000 views - as you say, totally insane.

Digg has been a bit flaky yesterday and today though, the new UI upgrade seems to be taking it out of action for long periods.

Yeah, the smell gets to me as well now. If I were still in the hunt for a partner I suspect that smelling like an ash tray would not be on the top of my list of must haves.

Mind you, chances are it would be a bonus compared to some of my, er, finer points :)

I quit, oh, must be about 12 years ago now I guess. Decided I didn't want to kill myself using that particular poison one night and never smoked another ciggy from then on.

Funny thing is, I have never ever once felt the urge to smoke either.

Us chaps get involved with nappies and things as well, only for four in my case although there was a twelve year gap between the first two and the second two.

Believe me, coming up with the banned words list for that filter was not an easy process and involved many late night debates.

I still have the scars :)
