Short answer for : Facebook video calling exists, but the way it worked in 2011 is different from how it works now. This thread has useful user experience notes, so below are practical, up-to-date points and troubleshooting that build on the replies from , and .

Modern behavior and choices

  • Current Facebook video calls run through Messenger (web or app) and, in most browsers, use standard in‑browser capture (WebRTC). That means you normally do not need the old Skype-based plugin that was used early on. If a standalone client is preferred or advanced features are needed, use Skype or a dedicated conferencing app.

Quick checklist before calling

  • Verify the webcam and microphone work in the OS camera app.
  • Update your browser and allow camera/mic permissions for Messenger.
  • Close other apps that may be locking the camera (Skype, other browser tabs).
  • Ensure a stable upload: roughly 500 kbps+ gives usable quality; higher for HD.
  • On corporate or public networks, strict firewalls/NAT can block video — try a home network or the desktop app.

Troubleshooting steps

  • Try an alternate browser or the Messenger desktop/mobile app.
  • Clear site permissions and re-grant camera/mic access.
  • Update webcam drivers and disable privacy extensions that block media.
  • If calls are repeatedly poor, use Skype or a conferencing tool that supports group calls, screen sharing, and better NAT traversal.

Recommendation

  • For quick calls with Facebook contacts, Messenger is simplest. For multi-party meetings, screen sharing, or calling phones, choose Skype or a full-feature conferencing tool.

facebook video chat result is not up to the mark :/ skype is better for video call

yes skype is better than facebook video chat

I'm using facebook video chat. When you click on the video option in the chat box, Facebook will itself prompt you to setup the video chat function. All you have toclick is install and next. All the best.

I am using skype but excited for Facebook chat.
