will this cable help?

short answer: that cable will not let you use your laptop’s screen. Two blockers most folks miss: (1) a laptop’s VGA jack is almost always output-only, so it cannot accept video from another device; you would need a display input, which typical notebooks do not have. (2) your Galaxy S GT‑I9000 does not have HDMI at all. It outputs analog video through the headphone jack with Samsung’s TV‑Out cable; you enable TV Out in Settings and pick NTSC/PAL before wiring yellow/red/white to a TV. (hp.com)

What will work:

  • With this phone: use the TV‑Out cable into any TV with composite A/V inputs. In the phone, enable TV Out and select the matching TV system, then switch the TV to the external input. That mirrors the phone on the TV, not on a laptop LCD. (manualslib.com)
  • With a phone that really does output HDMI: to drive an old VGA monitor or projector, use an active HDMI‑to‑VGA converter (a little box or dongle that actually converts digital to analog). A plain HDMI‑to‑VGA cable won’t convert signals on its own. (hdmi.org)
  • If you must see the phone on the laptop screen: use a USB video capture device that accepts composite video (for the GT‑I9000) or HDMI (for other phones). Expect some lag; it is fine for photos or videos, not for gaming or rapid input.

was on the right track about needing more than just a cable. The key tweak is that the converter only helps when you are feeding a VGA display; it still won’t turn a laptop’s VGA into a video input. (hp.com)

fist thing I see is the size of the hdmi connection on the cable ,and I have to ask does your phone have full or mini hdmi[all small devices with hdmi I have have see used mini hdmi ] connection ,either way I not 100% if its the cable you need this from the description bothers me ,allthought im no expert on connectors and signals.
I would go to were I got the phone or to computer electronic store for info or to buy one ,not ebay ,

Please be noted: This cable only support analog signal, not digital signal
Please note(very important):

Not all of devices with HDMI or VGA interface is able to use this cable.

Analog signal and digital signal are hard to transfer, so please check your devices carefully before you place order.

Please note that it doesn't work with laptops to LCD monitor directly and that you will need an adapter box to convert the VGA signals to HDMI in the first place.only our cable is not enough.

It only fits High Definition Player, converter is needed when connect the PC and TV.

Please make sure that you understand how to use this cable before you purchase.

it has to be mini HDMI. Samsung s i9000 . So I am going to need a converter I think

or just look for a mini hdmi to vga .
mini to vga ,

adapter on ebay.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l2736&_nkw=mini+hdmi+converter

So I am going to need a converter I think

caperjack said cable alone wouldn't work becasue HDMI is digi and VGA is analog. So I think I will have to buy that converter box too. agree?

yes I think that is correct
