I am trying to retrieve data from a HDD that was inside a computer whose MOBO sustained a hit of lighting and fried.

I plugged in HDD to power supply and smoke immediately appeared.

Any ideas on what to do next?

sounds like its toast, not sure if there is any software that can help you but there are places that you can send it to that specialize in data recover that can probably help.
