Since covered the usual maintenance and reminded that Corel can be resource-hungry, here are targeted checks and fixes that are often the real cause of long open times for CorelDRAW files on older XP hardware (P4 / 1 GB RAM).

  1. Isolate file vs program: if a new blank document opens quickly but a particular file is slow, the file is the culprit. Try creating a brand-new document and copy/paste the artwork in sections into it — this often removes a single corrupted object or excessive hidden data that slows loading.
  2. Large embedded images and linked resources: very high-resolution bitmaps embedded inside a CDR make open/save slow. Export large images to disk, re-link them at a lower resolution, or keep them external rather than embedded. Also check for links to network paths that are unavailable (missing linked images or fonts on a network can hang the load).
  3. Fonts and printer drivers: Corel scans installed fonts and the default printer at startup; corrupt/too many installed fonts or an unavailable network printer can produce big delays. Temporarily move nonessential fonts out of the Windows Fonts folder (do not delete; back them up first) and set the default printer to a simple local driver to test.
  4. Observe resource use and tweak memory: watch Task Manager while opening the file to see spikes in CPU or memory. On XP with 1 GB RAM, heavy files may push paging activity — set virtual memory to a sensible size and consider increasing physical RAM if you work with large bitmap-heavy files.
  5. Repair, update and test elsewhere: run Corel’s repair install, apply the latest service patches for your Corel version, update video/print drivers, and test the slow file on a different machine. If none of the above helps, resave the artwork into a fresh file (or export/import objects into a new doc) to remove hidden metadata.

Cautions: always back up fonts and important files and create a system restore point before moving fonts or changing drivers.

Start with the usual:
Defrag, Chkdsk, virus and spyware scan.
Do you get error messages?
Are any other programs slow?
Is your HD getting full?
Is windows up to date?
