For : a desktop that stays "selected" usually comes from a selection mode, input device or Explorer setting rather than a corrupted desktop. The steps below go from quickest checks to deeper troubleshooting so the cause can be identified and fixed without guessing.

  • Click an empty area of the desktop, press Esc, or press and release Ctrl/Shift/Alt (to clear a stuck modifier). Right-click the desktop and choose Refresh (or press F5). Reboot if the highlight persists.
  • Verify click/selection options: open Folder Options (File Explorer -> View -> Options -> Change folder and search options, or Control Panel -> Folder Options). On the General tab set "Click items as follows" to "Double-click to open an item (single-click to select)". On the View tab, uncheck "Use check boxes to select items" if it is enabled.
  • Check the mouse: Control Panel -> Mouse -> Buttons tab -> turn off "ClickLock" (or open Additional mouse options from Settings on newer Windows). Try a different mouse or disconnect extra input devices (gamepads, tablets) in case they are sending input.
  • If the problem began after using offline pages, try Sync Center -> Manage offline files -> Disable offline files and reboot to rule out an offline-files overlay/behavior.
  • If still stuck, test in Safe Mode or a new user account to see if it is profile- or shell-extension-related. System Restore (if a restore point exists) can undo recent changes; back up important files first.

Notes: collecting the Windows version and any recent shell utilities or desktop managers will help isolate causes if the above does not resolve the issue.
