hi what format is best for back up of media files mainly dvd without loss of picture or sound quality is there any way to shrink files without any major loss currently storing them all as iso files and playback via kantaris media player

Any format has the opportunity to save at loss less quality if you set the bitrate high enough, it's a matter of the particular settings. I'd suggest looking into divx, check out imtoo dvd ripper platinum and play with the settings to find a quality you're comfortable with in a size that you're happy with.

Note: you will be giving up the menus in most (if not all) compressed formats.

I use the MKV file container using an 1800Kbps video quality and passing through the original AC3 audio tracks. This will make a 1.5 hour movie about 1GB-1.2GB in size. The quality of the video is excellent and it is pretty hard to distinguish that you aren't watching the real DVD.
