Ok I am about to install Windows XP 64 on my pc, to see how it runs, anything I should know before I do this?

and will my games still run at 32-bit even tho the OS is 64-bit?

Note: this thread dates from 2004–2008. Microsoft ended support for Windows XP (including the x64 edition) on April 8, 2014, so running XP x64 today on Internet‑connected systems carries security and compatibility risks.

Compatibility snapshot: XP x64 runs most 32‑bit user‑mode applications under the WoW64 subsystem, so many games will start and play. Kernel‑mode components (chipset, graphics, network, audio, scanner/printer drivers, anti‑cheat or capture drivers) must be native 64‑bit—if a vendor didn’t publish x64 drivers the device may not work. The in‑thread experience is mixed: hit an unsupported nForce chipset, while reported a game working fine; other posters like and were optimistic.

Pre‑install checklist:

  • Confirm the CPU supports x86‑64 (AMD64 or Intel EM64T).
  • Make a full backup and system image; a clean install is required (no in‑place upgrade from 32‑bit).
  • Inventory hardware and download 64‑bit drivers for chipset, video, NIC, audio and printers beforehand.
  • Update BIOS/firmware where recommended.
  • Install chipset/storage drivers first, then network so the system can fetch updates, then graphics and peripherals.
  • Test on a spare drive, separate partition, or in a VM if possible.

DirectX and gotchas: DirectX 9‑era games generally work but need proper x64 GPU drivers for hardware acceleration. Expect failures for 16‑bit installers, 32‑bit kernel drivers, overlays/anti‑cheat, and really old peripherals. If no x64 driver exists, check the vendor for Server 2003 x64 drivers (sometimes compatible) or plan to replace the device.

Quick troubleshooting tips: capture hardware IDs from Device Manager and search vendor pages; keep 32‑bit recovery media handy; install drivers in the order above; if long‑term use is intended, prefer a supported modern 64‑bit OS or run XP x64 inside a VM.

I am running an online MMORG called City of Villains in 32 bit mode and so far no bugs.
It runs just as well as on XP if not better. I am assuming you have set up a 64 bit raid?
I would say go forward and do it.
