What does SMC.exe mean when you first boot up and are on the icon page? Is it a problem with a screen saver or somthing more serious?. Should I run a reg cleaner or not?

You need to provide some more information.

What does the error message say? Unless we know the exact error message, there isn't much that we can do for you.

I do know that smc.exe is usually part of the Sygate Personal Firewall pakage, but it could be something else as well.

Usually smc.exe is a part of the Sygate Secure Enterprise, more specifically the firewall product. Is that file giving you an error? You can uninstall Sygate Personal Firewall or disable it but then you might not have a firewall. If you have XP SP2 installed you can try uninstalling Sygate's FW and enable the XP firewall - I think I remember reading about those two firewalls having conflicts.

Thanks for the replys.

I rand a system check, I have XP Pro and it found the error and corrected it.
It was with the firewall.
