Hi all

As described in the title, please also have a look at my screenshot so it'll be easy for you to see what my problem is. It show the same icon everytime I open chrome and excel file in the taskbar. It switches between chrome and excel icon. How can I fix that ?

Thank you

Short summary: this was the classic case of two different apps showing the same taskbar icon. pointed the troubleshooting in the right direction and confirmed the problem was fixed. For future readers, here are practical, non-destructive steps that help identify and prevent the same symptom.

  • Unpin and repin the apps: unpin Chrome and Excel from the taskbar, close both programs, open each from the Start menu, then right‑click the running icon and choose “Pin to taskbar.” That recreates clean shortcuts and fixes many shortcut-related mismatches.
  • Check file associations: right‑click an Excel file → Open with → Choose another app → set Excel as the default. If a spreadsheet is set to open in a browser, the taskbar button can look odd.
  • Verify shortcut targets: right‑click the taskbar icon, then right‑click the program name in the menu and open Properties. Confirm the Shortcut/Target points to the correct executable (not to a web shortcut or incorrect launcher). If it does, recreate the shortcut from the app’s EXE.
  • Reload the shell: open Task Manager and Restart Windows Explorer to force the taskbar to re-read shortcuts and icons.
  • If it recurs, look for third‑party taskbar/start menu customizers or system tweaks and disable them; if needed repair/reinstall the affected app(s).

Cautions: avoid deleting system files or making registry edits without a System Restore point or backup. Also: include an uncropped screenshot of the full taskbar (showing pinned versus running icons) when asking for help — it makes diagnosis much faster.
