Sometimes when you change resolutions on the fly, the icons in the taskbar get pixelated and funny looking. Logging out and then back in or restarting the computer fixes this. I'm not sure if that's what you're referring to though.

If you're using vBulletin 3, go into the Style Manager for the style you wish to edit. The change will be made in either the postbit or postbit_legacy template, depending upon which one you use. (User info on top vs. user info on left).

The very bottom of the template should say:

<if condition="$show['spacer']"><if condition="!$post['islastshown']"></div></if>$spacer_close</if>
<!-- / post #$post[postid] -->

Directly above this, add:

<if condition="$post[postcount]==1">
<!-- text advertising -->
Google AdSense here
<!-- / text advertising -->
</if>

Of course, it can be customized via HTML and CSS as I have done to have a background, etc.

Oh really BizSeek? That's very interesting to know that they really are willing to go the extra mile to help you like that.

Freshell.org looks like it gives you a free shell account on their server. As they say, they are a "public access unix system". So it isn't actually MS-commands you need to know, but linux/unix commands. What do you plan on using this account for?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You're very welcome ToOnZ! I hope you got it all straightened out. Darmak, what you're asking seems that it can be accomplished by editing the includes/functions_online.php file. There is actually an existing vB.org hack that might be helpful - please let us know if it worked for you:

I haven't used phpBB2 in awhile but I'm pretty sure it can be setup in the ACP to work via invitation only. Is there also an option to make the memberlist private? If not, this can be edited via a simple one line mod to the memberlist.php file that I could help you with.

I could see it being somewhat useful on a niche forum. For example, a linux forum, where you can browse all the latest threads and you know you'll be interested in a lot of them. But this forum is so incredibly diverse, it seems that it wouldn't be too useful. That's why a Today's Posts feature is there instead .... there are over 300 posts per day, so hopefully that will quench your thirst for daniweb every 24 hours :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's not that it's been disabled - just that I thought it was somewhat redundant with a link to Today's Posts on every page. Do you really think it's an important feature?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

What I believe google is doing is switching to a quarterly PR update. The reason for this is to discourage the us of buying and selling PR for PR's sake. This way, suppose you get a good backlink. That backlink will affect your SERPS right away - but you, as a webmaster, can't reverse engineer google to figure out how much weight it has given your pagerank, etc.

Thanks! :)

Thanks so much. I'm glad you're enjoying DaniWeb and our new graphics improvements as well.

Actually, when I do a search for widescreen wallpaper, I end up at this thread :)

I was told that a very good way to get the word out about a site and get everyone talking is to get in good w/ blogging sites. Apparently people like to link in their blogs, and it could get people talking.

How could I go about doing this though? I thought maybe giving big blog owners privileges such as being in the community helpers usergroup, but that doesn't seem too fair ;) I certainly can't just go e-mailing everyone saying: "Would you like to write about me in your blog?" the same way I would request a link exchange with sites.

So what, exactly, do I go about doing?

- Dani

Hey there Lori, welcome to DaniWeb. Why don't you go ahead and post your question as a new thread in the Windows forum with as detailed a description as you can. This is just the "introduce yourself" thread here in the Geek's Lounge and we try to keep threads on topic so it's easy to find everything for everyone :)

Hello simplewhitelady, welcome to DaniWeb :)

Hello all of you guys. Gosh, looks like it's been a bit of time since I last checked this thread! Well, welcome aboard. I hope that you enjoy yourselves here ;)

Sounds good.

Yes, this is simply how Google AdWords operates. Obviously google wants to keep the ads in its search result pages on target and links that searchers would be interested in and find useful. If your ads aren't being clicked on, google doesn't feel they are relevant and should be listed.

What you need to do is change your keywords or your ad write-up to be more relevant and entice people to click. What I do is create a new Ad Group for each and every of the 90+ forums on DaniWeb. i.e. I have a PHP ad group, a Security ad group, etc. Each ad group contains keywords specifically targeted to that group. And ads that are directly related to each ad group and click thru to the actual forum pages.

In the past, what we were seeing was a monthly backlink update shortly followed by a PR update. We've missed this path PR update but have seen 2 backlink updates so far. So who knows ;)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Emphasize that new news is being posted nearly every day. Offer a form of interaction - by means of a forum or even just a way to comment on news articles - because that brings people coming back to see what other visitors have to say, instead of just static content.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Cool, thanks :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thank you for that link :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I use the google toolbar. Unfortunately, without a PR update as of late, the PR bar isn't of much help anymore. But I still use it as a searchbox and a popup blocker. As for Alexa, you guys already know my take on that ;)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Basically everyone is just up in arms about when the next PR update will happen. We've experienced a few backlink updates recently, but no change in PR for the most part. What I've been hearing is that this is part of Google's new effort to stop the buying and selling of PR (trading links). In other words, google is switching to a quarterly PR update instead of a monthly update.

As a quick answer to your question, perl is a shell scripting language for Unix. With a lot of work you can use Apache for Windows and run perl scripts as a backend to websites. However, it's not a language to develop software programs in.

For each of thse languages you need a compiler for that language. Of the languages posted, free compilers / IDEs are available, though mostly for unix/linux based operating systems.

I am a fan of Internet Explorer simply because I feel it's the fastest since it's so well integrated into Microsoft Windows. Of course this isn't as strong a case for Win98 as it is with Win2000/XP. I also like FireFox though.

The current way of doing things is where the links to newpostinthreadXXX.html and lastpostinthreadXXX.html redirect to their showthread.php? counterparts. The following mini-tutorial will fix that:

STEP ONE

Add the following line to your .htaccess file:

RewriteRule ^post([0-9]+).html$ showthread.php?p=$1 [L]

STEP TWO

All of the following changes need to be made to the showthread.php file:

exec_header_redirect("showthread.php?$session[sessionurl_js]p=$getlastpost[postid]$highlightwords#post$getlastpost[postid]");

should be replaced with

exec_header_redirect("post$getlastpost[postid].html#post$getlastpost[postid]");

exec_header_redirect("showthread.php?$session[sessionurl_js]p=$posts[postid]$highlightwords#post$posts[postid]");

should be replaced with

exec_header_redirect("post$posts[postid].html#post$posts[postid]");

exec_header_redirect("showthread.php?$session[sessionurl_js]t=$threadinfo[threadid]&goto=lastpost$highlightwords");

should be replaced with

exec_header_redirect("lastpostinthread$threadinfo[threadid].html");

exec_header_redirect("showthread.php?$session[sessionurl_js]t=$thread[pollid]");

should be replaced with

exec_header_redirect("thread$thread[pollid].html");

$firstunread = 'showthread.php?' . $session['sessionurl'] . 't=' . $threadid . '&goto=newpost';

should be replaced with

$firstunread = 'newpostinthread' . $threadid . '.html';

Hey there! I'm here to help if you have a question related to my vBulletin mod_rewrite tutorial. For those of you who don't know what he's referring to, msimonds is referring to my tutorial here: [thread]9379[/thread]

So what exactly is going wrong msimonds? How could I help?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

What is it? A virus?

He would have been 51 today. He passed away right before his 50th. :(

Look at all of the templates in the FORUMHOME template group and replace all occurrences of <a href="forumdisplay.php?..."> with <a href="$forum['url'].html">

With OS X, I use the Sherlock app to look up local movie listings. However, what I recently noticed was that my OS X no longer displays the movie trailers. Just a blank square appears and when I click the play button, nothing happens.

Does anyone know what codec is required for this? I have registered versions of Quick Time Pro and DivX Pro installed.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Very good :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Now I'm just confused ;)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Keep in mind that pt and px are not directly equivalent - i.e. 8 pt is not the same as 8 px. So don't go and change it and then thing it's wrong because the font changed size.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, that makes much more sense! As to your question, that's because there are limited features available to the DaniWeb tutorial threads. The idea is that all replies be comments / responses to the original article.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

What is an armstrong number?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The change you made in Step 4 Part 1 would make it stop working?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Well, first of all get rid of your <font face="Verdana" size="2"> tags :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Have you tried .navhead { font-size: 10pt; } ?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I was pretty sure that you eventually get to 4. But if you extend it one line more than you have, you'll see there are 5 1s :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You said you'll never encounter a 4 in the pattern. But that's not true ... if you work it out long enough you eventually will encounter a sequence of the same number four times in a row. Then, the next row would include a 4 in it.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Oooh not quite magic ... if you work it out looooong enough you'll encounter 4s, and 5s, etc ... ;) Oh, I misunderstood - there will never be a 4 in the sequence of the 3 next numbers I asked for :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

What I mean is ... your guess was correct magic :) Congrats! Care to explain the solution to the confused masses?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I figure I'd let you all get a go at another math riddle :) Let's see if you can figure out the pattern and then guess the next three numbers. The first person to successfully post the next three numbers of the pattern will receive $5 PayPal :)

1, 11, 21, 1211, ...

Okay, well maybe that was one number too many ;) I'm letting you guys have it too easy!
