That's weeeeeiiird. It doesn't do that for me?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Everything is working great for me now. How about you?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

aeinstein, I think you cursed me. I cleaned out my Internet cache and cookies this morning and I've been having the same problem ever since! I tried clearing them out a second time to no avail. ??? I'm going to look into this some more too ... it seems the only solution is to alter the names of the cookies themselves, but that would do more damage than it would be productive (especially if we're the only two members with this problem - as everyone would then have to re-login and it still might not work)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

That's really wacky. I had a bit of a similar problem previously. If I went into Profile and changed my password, it automatically logged me out but still showed me as logged on. (I guess it was getting confused b/c the cookie on my PC didn't match up with the password in the database?) I had to log out and then log back in to get it fixed, and it's been working since. Incidently ... passwords are stored encrypted, if that could be part of the problem? (I doubt so?)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Just took a looksie at the MySQL database and everything looks good on my end. You're stored as just a single record in a table of members. Locally, you should have two cookies: one called techtalkuser and one called techtalkpasswd.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I think inscissor was having the same problem before and he cleared out his IE Temporary Internet Files (not cookies) and the problem seems to have been fixed? (I dunno!) Maybe he should come check this thread ... ;D

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Is it possible to do some rudiamentary X86 stuff with cgywin? (i.e. lets say you wanted to write Liang's stick figure program which uses QT)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yup ... but you don't want my opinion ;D It's basically the same as previous versions of VB, with a few lil statements changed. Also, it's more object oriented, if that's even possible. For just about every single command, you have to specify the exact object/object property you are talking about. (This makes no sense until you've tried it for yourself!)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

heh :-P I never overclock, not worth it 4 me

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Ahem, ahem. I have good vision ... okay, well ... I *did* have good vision until looking at the monitor too much fucked it up. But ......... well, I don't wear glasses all the time.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

People signed up today as techtalk members ... people have come and visited! But no one posted ??? So I think I'll volunteer as the first - even though the night is wrapping up to a close.

Oh well, there's always tomorrow!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

aeinstein, I'm really not too crazy about frames - I always end up getting stuck in them, and they don't index well with search engines :( I already yelled at Dan for having frames on his website (and see, he got rid of them for me! hahaha)

what I am going to end up doing is probably having two columns side-by-side, though (a big one with main content and a sidebar type deal)

I still don't know how the setup is going to be though.

BTW ... you can always start votes for anything yourself: just click the new vote button instead of the new topic button. ;D

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

inscissor, your friend over at animepad just used the default phpBB template style. :P The only thing that was changed was the actual animepad logo in the upper left of the index page.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You know the Forum Stats on the index page? I was thinking of redoing their look ...

Or, optimally, creating a new homepage so the user isn't automatically thrown at the forum board index.

This new homepage would include a bunch of forum info as well as possibly "other stuff" (yeah, stuff, that's it)

I used SSI to generate this non-forum page (which incorporates forum stats) - Perhaps some of its info can be thrown into a template ;)

http://www.techtalkforums.com/temp.php

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's very funny that you should say that ... at the moment, I am in Dreamweaver making a mock new homepage (which I'm going to do some playing around with before it goes public).

I'd greatly appreciate it if you could make a mock template too. Maybe then I can show you what I have going and we can exchange ideas.

Basically, this is a forum for USERS. And it should be most convenient / easiest setup for the USER! ;D (P.S. that's you!)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

So ... whatcha think?

The first choice is the way it is now. The last choice is the most condensed (but also provides the least amount of info).

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I hand-redid the entire database. I reentered all the values in - half of them were screwed up from the conversion.

After altering 1000+ cells of tables of the database, let me know pleeeeez if anything at all doesn't work or look right.

Thanks!

Have you tried the S3 website at http://www.s3graphics.com/ and looked for drivers there?

According to the website, there is a download drivers section.

sounds like a good choice (but of course I'm not impartial having always gone with redhat LOLOL)

it seems like a good idea to start out with redhat and then maybe move on to try your luck with slackware

of course ... people are very proud of the distributions they choose to use -> slackware ppl will always say slackware is the best, mandrake ppl will always say mandrake is the best, and, of course, redhat ppl will always say redhat is the best (which, everyone knows, it is LOLOL)

in any case ... I have used redhat since version 5.2 and they are up to 7.3 now. to be honest, the linux geek who first introduced me to linux started me out with redhat, but meanwhile he, himself, has always used slackware (go figure) -> (btw, yes, ron, i'm talking about u, feel free to comment)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Personally, I have an AMD Athlon XP dedicated to WinXP and an Intel P4 dedicated to Red Hat. If you're going to dual boot, have win installed first, then install linux on a second partition and use GRUB (a boot loader which comes built into the installs of many distributions, including RedHat 7+ (before that it was only LiLo) - but grub is better than lilo).

In any case ... I've always used Red Hat and I'm totally happy with it. It's the best in terms of balancing ease of use with power. Slackware linux, on the other hand, is a real hardcore distribution - be prepared to put a lot of effort into learning it, but once you do, you'll KNOW linux backwards and forwards

now for Mandrake ... mandrake boasts the most easy to use linux system - never used it myself, but supposedly it's got all these wizards and lotsa guis to help you out - it's supposed to be for windows users who want to get their feet wet in linux

that's good and dandy and all, but the problem with mandrake is that it is based on redhat. basically all mandrake is, is a redhat core with extra guis and nicer graphics on top of it to make it easier to use (sorta where apple is going with OSX -> unix with a nice gui)

the problem with this is that mandrake is always behind redhat in releasing stuff ... for …

The changes were slight, but just curious if any of you noticed some changes I made to the homepage. I adjusted the width of the columns so that the time/date display is easier to read. Also, I changed all of the descriptions for the different boards.

I'm still debating whether I want to keep the descriptions up there at all.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Jason, thank you for replying with the solution. Hopefully this will help out others in the future. It's really great when people we help respond. Sometimes it feels like it's pointless giving people advice when you never know how it turns out. OK that's just me rambling! Certainly not aimed at you! Thanks again ... And good luck with all your computing!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I think what Abbas Mirza means is that you should go to "msconfig" and try disabling svchost.exe from there so that it never loads at startup. This way, you aren't disabling it from inside Windows. Instead, you are not enabling it to begin with.

I'd like to make something clear though: svchost.exe is a native Windows process which really should be left on. Is it possible that a virus has attached itself to this file, and that is what is causing the huge cpu load? By nature the program eats a lot of cpu time, but not this much!

I'm thinking about buying my first mac soon (a desktop). I'm basically very intrigued by the bsd-based OS X.

In any case ... I'm looking to make a purchase as early as sometime this summer, but I'm willing to wait.

Are the G5's coming out soon, or at all? Or ya think I should stick with the G4 (they've been out awhile, I know that much).

I've never followed mac news so I'm not very well-informed as far as this stuff goes.

Comments?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I went to the task manager ... 60 processes running with Windows XP - I think I knew what 3 of them were ??? (*if* that many!)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I think I have a virus!!

Yesterday, my PC suddenly went up to 100% cpu and never came back down.

Then, today, random message boxes kept popping up on my screen (no apps open). One of them, for example, said "We Were Four Guys ... That's All[interview].wma" Then I got others talking about "four guys" and stuff like that.

Any clue what this could be from?
Norton AntiVirus didn't pick up anything, and I'm sure LiveUpdate is up 2 check.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Actually ... not true

They are definitely not the fastest cable ISP!!

Cable modems, themselves, are all capable of carrying about ~45mbps but ool caps us at around 10mbps

There are cable companies (like in Texas and out southwest) that cap at around ~40!!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Looks like it has been all resolved! I called up OptOnline and they fixed the problem.

It seems it was just us! The rest of the world was all seeing the new version right from the start.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

If you want to get started with Linux, try Mandrake or RedHat. RedHat is a pretty intuitive version, popular too. Mandrake is basically RedHat with a nicer gui interface/wizards to make the transition from Windows to Linux easier.

Doesn't anyone use 9x anymore?
I actually still use 98se on my 650mhz sony vaio laptop

Surprised no one has posted about these OS's yet
So I decided I'd be the first

I've noticed that when I close the forum and then re-open it, instead of the "Hey, TechTalkGal" message I usually get, it says "Welcome Guest" ...

Well, just wanted to let you know that I've discovered that there is no need to re-login when this happens. Just refresh your page ;D The script will automatically call for the 2 cookies on your pc.

btw ... it costs $85 to use vBulletin and well into the hundreds to use it without a link back to the vBulletin website. I don't know about you, but I'm all for open source :P

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Actually, when I was originally looking for a good forum script, I looked at vBulletin and all the rest. And I ended up liking Yabb the best.

All in all, they were pretty easy to configure. (Sure, I can say that now that it's all said and done with). And there are actually a lot of mods for it too.

If there are any vBulletin, etc features you really like that we don't have, let me know and I promise to look right into it.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

So what do ya think, CNBC expert? lol

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Stupid lil me wanted to get involved in the stock market so I bought a few shares of RedHat and a few shares of Sun Microsystems. (they are each at ~$5)

It's been less than a week and already I'm losing money ... Think there's any hope for me? (Note to self: pretty sure Sun at least will come back up there!)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Wait wait wait ... so I'm still waiting for an answer. Which is better: Dreamweaver (4 and/or MX) or GoLive?

Should I upgrade? SHOW ME THE WAY!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I remember back in the day I used to only use HTML. And you were the one who told me to use either Macromedia Dreamweaver or Adobe GoLive! ... but then you told me that you liked Dreamweaver better and recommended it to me over GoLive ...

So now you're saying that Dreamweaver's interface is more like GoLive's? Is that good or bad? You got me totally incredibly hooked on Dreamweaver 4 ... think the upgrade is worth it for me?

If I did buy it, I'd buy the standalone Dreamweaver. I have Flash 5 and I think I only used it one or two times.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Nonono ... there *is* a script. I just couldn't get it to work for the longest time. I finally figured it out.

It kept giving me file not found and path errors. It turns out it was because I was telling it the old .txt files were located at /forum/Boards and /forum/Messages but they were really at /forum/boards and /forum/messages (the default is capitalized).

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK OK ... I digress. Sorry for shouting at ya Dan. ;D

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yup I even wrote an if statement today in php !!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

After all that effort (still ongoing) to convert from Perl/.txt files to PHP/MySQL ... was it worth the headache? ;D Let me know!

Plus ... lets test out the first poll of the new boards !!
