I came across this demo of MAXX2 that I used to play under windows 95. I went to install it and it said it needed directX 5. I'm running 7. Is there any way around this? I don't play any other games so maybe I could uninstall directX7 and install 5 off the cd with the demo on? If so, how do I uninstall direct X?

I think I've just spotted a dialer:
http://flashgames.altervista.org/
enter the site and choose any of the downloads. It comes up as an exe file, rather than a flash one... so I was kind of suspicous. Then I noticed the url it was about to download it from, and... cancelled it. ;) quelle horreur!

the url is http://deposito.hostance.net/dialer/
nuff said I think...

if you install windows first then linux usually detects it and sets up its own multiboot environment - that's the case for Red Hat Linux 9 in any case. Admittedly it calls it DOS, but it's easy enough to rename...

Is this supposed to be connected to some other thread? Is that the missing link here?

DaveSW 15 Master Poster

if you google that file you'll find it's a backdoor trojan, so yes delete it... ;)

DaveSW 15 Master Poster

when you say you deleted a load of files... what type of files?

DaveSW 15 Master Poster

try running adaware from http://www.lavasoft.de and spybot search and destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org and see if that tidies anything up.

You might also try uninstalling your toolbar to see if that's what's making the difference.

it sounds more like it is an oem copy that hasn't been activated. There should be a phone number to ring or a website to visit in order to activate it.

Office XP only opens 30 (ish) times before you are forced to activate.

Perhaps you could visit a few sites on the ie-spyad lists, and also tick the option for 'install on demand'...

Have fun anyway...

download it: http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=25851

You'll probably have to sign up for a free account. They are a reputable company however, so no worries.

xhtml is basically the same as html. The only difference is the doctype and that where an element has no closing tag you end it like <img src="" alt="" />.Ofcourse, xhtml has to be coded by the html rules that html is sometimes lax at interpreting.

Check out www.w3schools.com to learn either of them.

In previous threads where this has been discussed there is no real concrete answer as to which you should learn first. xhtml is simply strict html. Personally I'd go html and then make the conversion, because you may at some point have to work with html, so it makes sense to understand it.

I haven't heard that, but Opera places a banner ad on it's free version, so Mozilla has to be the best! ;)

I do actually use Opera for testing purposes (being a web developer) as it has all manner of special tools for viewing sites without stylesheets, emulating a text browser, emulating small screen formats etc. But I use Firefox for my everyday forum browsing.

And updated your antivirus?

Also if you're running antivirus you may need to run it in safe mode, and disable system restore.

Try and reactivate that on a different system and you'll strike problems. (And you'll have to do some pretty good talking to get Microsoft to do it by phone.)

It wasn't all that difficult as I remember it... Got me worried when it diverted from the automatic phone system to an operator though!

Adaware: http://www.lavasoft.de

Then report back. If your problem is not resolved then I reccomend you post a HiJackThis log in the security forum: http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html - This will give us an overview of all your running processes etc.

it seems the rundll.exe program is actually designed for Microsoft to be able to call functions from the dll files. It suggests that you may not actually need it on your computer anyway, so it may not be that serious.

The Rundll and Rundll32 utility programs were originally designed only for internal use at Microsoft.

Have you connected a normal phone to see if there is a dial tone?

DaveSW 15 Master Poster

very wise :o

DaveSW 15 Master Poster

I'm glad you see it that way... ;)

From what I can make out a dll (dynamic link library) contains basic functions - like print, etc, which can be called by any other program to save developers rewriting the same code. It could also include stuff like shutdown, hibernate, etc.

From what I've read you need to use SFC to re-extract it off your windows disk, but you might want to wait for Crunchie to confirm that. No, DO wait for Crunchie to confirm it...
