Hello all

I just picked up a Mustek 1200 UB USB scanner. I downloaded the files needed for installation from the Mustek site and followed and instructions for XP installation. The control panel "Scanners and Cameras" panel shows my scanner installed, and the same in computer properties ---> hardware under image devices.

However, there was no panel provided, so I attempted to use the windows Scanner and Camera wizard, which gives the following error:

"The computer cannot detect the scanner or camera"

I clicked the MUSTEK 1200 UB scanner icon in the control panel's "scanners and cameras panel", and ran the diagnostic test - the scanner does respon and does the test, and I recieve a message notifying me the scanner passed the diagnostic test.

Apparently a lot of other people are having a similar problem, so I do not think the scanner itself is broken (second hand).

Are there are third party scanning programs that support Mustek scanners, or any solutions you can offer?

Thanks

Thanks for the help all, in the end I bought a Gigabyte 256mb 6600. It's a great card, runs very smoothly, but one problem persists: cooling.

The cooling system is not a fan, but a rather odd "silent pipe". A system of metal is built around the GPU, and I imagine it works by "extracting" the heat into the metal.

Picture of the system

Now, after a while, games begin to become slower and skip quite a lot, especially Counter Strike: Source.

Due to the rather complex system, I am asking members here who have had experience with the Gigabyte 6600 (or the silent pipe) if it can be removed and replaced by a more trust worthy fan cooler. Any comments are appreciated.

Thankyou :)

I am currently running a Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9600 Pro card, which has served me well, but with games like bf2 and hl2 flying around, it's time for an upgrade.

I have £117 to spend, but technically only about £110 due to shipping. I have asked some friends on their opinion, but it's gotten about as helpful as "buy a radeon". I want open minds here please :)

The few cards that have gotten my attention so far are:

BFG GeForce 6200 OC 256MB

Aopen Aeolus Gf6600gt/agp8x 128mb

Leadtek Winfast Geforce 6600GT 128MB Ddr3

Leadtek WinFast A6600 TD 256mb

I also heard 6600 had lockup problems with D3D...any confirmation/fixes on this?

Anyhow, advice, opinions etc, even better, how they all match up to each other?

Post away!

Just bought a new 120gb WD hard drive. I plug it in, and Windows doesn't seem to recognise it. It pops up with "Found new Hardware", and the add hardware wizard simply says it is working properly. BIOS also shows the hard drive is there and working. Whats up? Do I need to format it?

Recently, my computer is prone to a strange power related (I think) problem. The montior would "lose signal" as it were (i.e. the monitor is still on, but it gives a "monitor shutting down" message).

If I have, for example, music playing it will do that looping problem. The power LED also stays on. This suggests the computer is locking up too. When I reboot the pc, I get a BIOS error message saying "Hardware monitor has found a problem", so I go into BIOS setup --> power --> Hardware monitor. It gives the mobo and cpu temperature, and some power statistics. Next to "+12v" the field is in red, and hangs around 10-11v. I have no idea what is happening, and any advice would be helpful. Is this just a monitor problem?

Hmm I'll look around overclockers.co.uk and see what I can find.

Thanks for the help.

So it's my mobo that is making it run at 80 constant, or is it just reading it wrong?

I run games like css, UT2004 etc, but the temperature remains at 80 D:

This is a wee but worrying - I have recently finished building my pc, using a Pentium 4 Prescott 2.4ghz

Now, I know that prescott has been dubbed "preshott" and that it is known for getting VERY hot, but 80 degrees is very dodgy.

My case is a bit dodgy on the cooling front, but it should give some effect:

Rear 12 cm fan
CPU duct on side panel

As soon as I start my pc up, my cpu will immediatly jump up to 80 degrees, which again is suprising...

Apparently the only real thing to do is to get a better heatsink or cooling system for the CPU, but I am no real expert on cooling, and hoped any of you could point me in the right direction. Any short term fixes will be welcomed too :)

Thanks

Recently I've been unable to access the internet i.e. browsers simply show "Page cannot be found". Scanned with AVG, it finds a java openstream virus. I need a little help removing this one ¬_¬

Software is stupidly expensive, and I'll admit I have copied/given cd keys to friends. Microsoft is a major problem with it, because they charge outrageous prices. However a lot of it does go to charity....

Cup of Squirrel 0 Junior Poster

A friend of mine gave me a copy of Windows 2000 they had. I installed only to find it was in Portugese D:

Is there anyway to change the universal language of windows or am I just going to have to get an english copy?

Cup of Squirrel 0 Junior Poster

Well, ebuyer will definitly tell me the item it is selling, but with a wee warning of:

"Please note: A 'Used product' in our blowout category may not always be complete. Accessories such as manuals, cables, and drivers may not ship with these products."

This I would imagine simply means items won't come with certain objects, but should be in working order. In CPU terms I'm sure this would only mean the heatsink or whatever would be missing, and thats not a serious problem because they're so cheap :P

There are some very good deals (P4 3.06ghz for £39.72, thats about $80), but they seem too good to be true. For example the 2.4ghz p4 is more expensive than the 3.06. I'm not sure why this is, and to be honest I'm not quite sure how the ebuyer used system works i.e. who supplies them.

I'm still considering whether or not to buy a used P4. You CAN return faulty products, which is a good sign. Plus I only wish to get a simple system working until I upgrade to 64bit in a year or so when it becomes mainstream.

I probably will go for it, as soon as one becomes in stock. 40 quid for a 3ghz cpu? yes please :D

Cup of Squirrel 0 Junior Poster

Ok, I need info on buying second hand processors. There are plenty being sold on ebuyer, and I am querying as to whether or not I should do it.

Now I know that im getting to get plenty of people saying no simply because the word "used" or "second hand" comes into play, but to be honest \I wouldn't think it would be that bad. I would prefer user experiences from ordering used stuff, especially from ebuyer.

I have recently discovered the rather nice Winamp media library funtions, and was wondering if it was possible to create a smart view so everything is sorted by genre/is put into genre catagories. Failing that is there just an option I can set?

I talked a lot on IRC with other people who built PCs, they gave me advice on what to buy and what not to buy etc. Having people around to help you can be very helpful because you can ask questions instead of having to put up with the info you have. However, a lot of people's opinions differ, so you will feel a little "pushed around". Still, in all honesty it isn't that hard.

This has been really getting on my nerves recently. Now and again when I connect to a counter-strike server, a "server busy" windows dialog box will pop up, forcing cs to minimize. I click "switch-to" for about 25-30 seconds, and some adware pops up. I close the adware, open cs and fps is now down to almost unplayable.

I have scanned with Ad-Aware, spybot, AVG and Microsoft anti-spyware, cleared absolutley everything out, restarted and the problem persists :/

Any ideas?

Ok ok your asking a bit of a mouthful there;

Do you know any languages at all yet?

MSN is down atm. They do this. Sometimes firewalls, cookies, windows security settings and network settings (if you are on a network) can affect these things. Usual is just updating windows (if any updates are released), reinstalling MSN and checking your settings.

Also, being patient and leaving msn for a few days can help.

When you say "spam", you really have to be more specific;

Many malicious users will simply spam threads with useless/inaproppriate (spelling!) materials. This can be stopped slightly by enabling "Spam control" of about 30-60 seconds.

One thing you MUST disable is HTML in signatures. Users can create spam codes such as opening multiple windows in their signature, usually linking to more unacceptable sites.

Limiting links to other sites is pretty useless, as the point of forums are to create circles off communities of the same subject, but if you feel some members will leech your community strongly then limiting links may help.

Limiting the number of characters in a signature is a good move, usually to about 300-500 characters in my opinion.

The sad truth is, though, no matter how hard you try "rage" or "grief" groups will always be able to bypass these anti-spam measures, but they usually have a motive i.e. they have placed some sort of attack on the group in a verbal manner, or "bashing" them on their site/forum, or they find the content humorous in one way or another and simply spam it for amusement. The best way to counter-attack these are simply to stay calm, delete and ban as many users as possible (however many use proxies so keeping them away permenantly is impossible in some cases), or if things get too over the top, simply take the boards offline for a week or so.

The thing to …

I was watching a couple of video's of UT pros, when I noticed that they had changed the "You killed Player" to "You [instert-naughty-word-here!] Player".

I did a quick Windows search of the files, and it didnt come up with anything...is there a particular file that the message texts are kept in?

Oooh yes very elegant indeed :D

However I like the uber-nerd approach:

A RAM upgrade will increase your computer's speed significanlty (spelling?)!

Cup of Squirrel 0 Junior Poster

overclocking is making your processor of a pci/agp card or your main cpu run faster. Your cpu's "clock" speed means its working power and speed, so overclocking your cpu means it is making it work faster.

The best way to overclock is by going to your BIOS settings. This is usually done by press a certain button at the startup info/splash screen (usually delete, F1, F2 etc). Refer to your motherboard and pc manual for exact instructions.

From there on it is simply a matter of exploring the menus and finding the correct options and changing the multiplier and/or bus speed. Overclocking is sort of complicated to explain, so google it for exact instructions in how.

There are several things you MUST keep in mind:

-When clocking your cpu up, only do it in single steps. Notch it up one, start your pc normally. If you can run without crashes or glitches, then try turning it up more.

-Cooling is VERY important when it comes to overclocking. Ensure your heatsink (fan over your pc) works, and that your case's fans work. Overclocking can heat your cpu up dramaticly, and getting it too hot can damage your cpu

Hope this helps a bit. I'm no expert on overclocking so its best to google/wait for a more experienced member to post!

Looks good, but get a gfx card and higher watt PSU imo :p

Depends what you use your pc for:

If its just general home use, 256 megabytes will do fine, while gaming or large office/work will need 512 and up.

However, RAM is a pain in the behind as you need to get the right RAM that will go with your Motherboard. If you can, dig out your computer/motherboard manual and look for the board's stats and info. Post anything to do with memory, RAM, DDR and SDR, PC number (i.e. PC3200) and we'll get back to you!

Ah I was looking at programming for the Palm OS as I have a PalmOne Zire, so I might look into that :D

Ok, downloaded and found an online tutorial and I've already hit a bit of trouble:

// my first program in C++

#include <iostream.h>

int main ()
{
  cout << "Hello World!";
  return 0;
}

Thats the program. I compile and run as a .cpp. It seems to compile fine ("hello.exe" appears in folder), but when it comes to running, it shows the DOS box to display the text, and immediatly (spelling?) closes. The log displays something like this:

In file included from C:/Dev-Cpp/include/c++/3.3.1/backward/iostream.h:31,
                 from /my folder etc/hello.cpp:3:
C:/Dev-Cpp/include/c++/3.3.1/backward/backward_warning.h:32:2: warning: #warning This file includes at least one deprecated or antiquated header. Please consider using one of the 32 headers found in section 17.4.1.2 of the C++ standard. Examples include substituting the <X> header for the <X.h> header for C++ includes, or <sstream> instead of the deprecated header <strstream.h>. To disable this warning use -Wno-deprecated.

Execution terminated
Compilation successful

What am I doing wrong :S

Ok, time to get off my ass and learn C and C++. However, I'm having a bit of trouble finding a free compiler; I'm a newbie so it needs to have a friendly and explanatory GUI if possible. Just post name and/or link, thanks :D

Is it me, or has firefox become far slower since the update?

Just when Microsoft start to look good with 2 stable OS in a row, they release SP2 =/

Try turning off the windows firewall and any third party firewalls you have. The new SP2 security features automaticly set themselves to stupid settings sometimes and its just a matter of freeing it all up I'm afraid

The only ideas I can think of are using different cd-r makes, or using different software (if you havn't already) like Nero.
