Hi divinitt02, You did not offend me at all. It seemed to me that you wanted an answer before others may wake up and check this forum. That comment about thanks for one view made me want to reply is only that answers may take a day or so as folk go about there day and pass by to see what's new here.

Do you see that now? Not offended at all.

I think you need to read the next link. https://computer.howstuffworks.com/dns.htm

You most likely bought a domain or web site name. So next up is to share where you will be put this side. Did the seller supply you with a place to put your web site at?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

2 things. Your blog looks ancient in content.

Second I think you'll have to write some VBA code to do this one. I didn't find the search and replace to do what you asked.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

You left out a critical piece of the question. Where is that database? If it's on the handheld you could try 127.0.0.1. But that would be me guessing what you meant or needed here.

Those Kodi boxes and many add ons are dead now. Read why at https://www.howtogeek.com/336176/why-your-kodi-box-isnt-working-and-what-to-use-instead/

Are you sure you want to keep up a site that will only get folk that are upset?

@Phillipe, that's terrible. At our office not one glitch but few AMD machines.

Windows Server generally has been dead stable. Can you share what Windows Server version this was and a news link?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Sometimes it takes a day. Here you posted 4AM my time and it's now 6AM and I'm just now getting a moment to look around.

However when I read any name and password routing I'm always checking to see if the code looks to be using the old way of storing the name and password. Storing the passwords is just not done anymore. Today's method? Here's a search on that:
https://www.google.com/search?q=Never+store+passwords+in+a+database

Yes, a common excuse is "I'm practicing."

May as well make it a good practice session.

Here, it's more about you applying yourself and members able to read what you tried and comment why it worked or not.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

So yes, sure. One formula but just before that formula you look up the "Tax Rate" . That is you have this "Tax Rate" variable to fill in.

OR you enumerate the states like AR = 1, AZ = 2, and so on till the last state, then make an array of Tax Rate then for the one formula you have the state input and then "Tax Rate [state]" will return that rate.

There are many ways to skin the cat here but it's always bad news for the cat.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I have a few thoughts on this.

  1. The columns have names. Search the project for references. If none, almost good to go. But don't delete.
  2. Don't delete, rename. That way you have a fast undo if you didn't catch it in line 1.

  3. Now for the big question. Is the company prepared with the Disaster Plan? The server goes up in smoke or drowns in a flood. I've found that either they have no plan and just hope nothing goes terrible wrong or get irate that anyone would every ask.
rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Not to sound obvious but you replace it. It's gone.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I missed what country this is for but here's the US Gov site with those rates for Fed and each state.
https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=10&t=10

So a yearly update it seems.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

There's one trick I used on W10 machines that is little known. I had a relative that insisted their PC could only use the 32 bit Windows versions. So fine, did that. Sure enough they were back saying they need the 64 bit version. The Digital Entitlement (horrid name) allowed the same version but in other bits to install and activate. So there is something nice about the new license system.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Sorry but I don't know of such an api. Tax tables may be on the web but since this must be correct it's best you get the tables, update your database then test the results.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

A relative had a pretty beat up qualifying Windows laptop so I took a chance that this deal was still working.

Read https://www.cnet.com/how-to/microsoft-windows-10-free-upgrade-offer-assistive-features/ but the new expiry date is now Jan 16, 2018.

Direct Link at www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

The question can only be answered by knowing the tax in each state of that country. You might be able to chunk down the amount of code or data if there is some harmony among states but for the USA the rates are all over the map and there can be city specific fuel surcharges as well.

Also, in the coming days there may be a need to account for other fuel sources. Such as I drive an all electric vehicle and there are taxes I pay on my electric bill. My EV car logs its power use so will you add that as well?

Yes, yes, it never seems to end.

Just last week I lucked into a "Windows 10 update ruined my PC." A relative told me this and I wanted this one to see what it was.

Nope. Was not what they thought it was. In this case the video mode was not optimum and an update was pending but would not install.

For a very good reason. On boot there was a clue given. "Press a key to skip disk check...." And no disk check would happen. Right or wrong I've seen this since Windows NT (for some that would be Windows XP.)

I opened a command prompt and typed in CHKDSK C: /F /R /X and then rebooted. The disk check ran, corrected some errors, the update installed, and rebooted to find the machine back to normal.

-> And here lies a huge problem. I call it the toaster problem. We have reached the point that folk expect a Windows PC to just work without having to know anything about this beast.

Nothing could be further from reality.

When you fix yours, share what it was.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Not something I deal with but there are site and CCS LINT or checkers you can toss your code at and see what comes out.
https://www.google.com/search?q=css+checker

The awful truth is when it's not your code, it's more likely to break and you get to invest the weeks to figure out what happened.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

It's a start but having seen programmers try to add POS support and not test I can only share the results most of the time.

And it's even worse today. Client expectations are higher than ever. They don't want to be your Alpha or Beta testers. They want it to install and give the results they expected.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Glad it was a repeat of the same old thing. At least you didn't have to get out the chainsaw.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Your command doesn't seem to have any log commands.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I think you've battled this before. My encounters with this has always been problems with filenames that are OK on the server but not allowed on FAT32. To sort this out I have to find a title that didn't sync and then see if some FAT32 rule was broken.

Also, it's possible that sync stops on the first failure. Nod to logs and MAX VERBOSITY at https://download.samba.org/pub/rsync/rsyncd.conf.html

Repeat, nod to all options about logging. Chain saws must be sharp, oiled and gassed up. You know what happened to Ash Williams.

Blatent copy from link below:

TL;DR The line PermitRootLogin yes does not belong in the ssh_config file, only in the sshd_config file.

The file ssh_config describes the configuration options for the client. As the error logs say, there is no such option PermitRootLogin for the client. The sshd_config file however, describes the options for the daemon. (You can recognise this because of sshd) The server/daemon does have a PermitRootLogin option, so it belongs there.
From https://superuser.com/questions/908179/ubuntu-plesk-ssh-issues-permitrootlogin

Probably same issue for line 2.

That's what HP spun off. Right or wrong the king (long live the king?) of analyzers we used was the venerable HP 8510, B, C etx.

So here's the quick setup. Select the input range from say 2 to 3 GHz and of course setup some antenna to the input. Now let it sweep.
You'll see a ton of spikes in the 2.4GHz range. Now zoom in on those spikes and you get more spikes. Now keep scanning and eventually you'll get a new spike. That tells you something new came into range. Doesn't tell you much more than that yet.

To get more will require a lot more hardware.

So back to less expensive ideas. The Bluetooth discovery you know about and its limits. There's also good old packet sniffing. You could look into WireShark and see what you can divine from that.

Finally the newish fake cell phone tower emulators. Google up Stingray to learn what that is.

Nothing cheap, small or easy to use for this question.

AssertNull commented: Let's try this again +0
rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Thanks Assertnull.

I do own a lightweight device that detects WIF signals but it's quite dumb and is not as interesting as WiFi is almost everywhere. It certainly won't tell you if the source was Android or other.

As to the BLUETOOTH, I will call that cooperative discovery. But it fails to reveal if the device is Android, some PC with what OS or an old dumb flip phone. It only tells you that some device had Bluetooth discovery turned on.

Passive discovery has to be spectrum analyzer then that put through analysis to categorize "what is it?" With many devices sleeping or in low power mode most of the time this would be costly to develop.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Then go ask about spectrum analyzers and how these are used to detect RF emissions passively. I consider myself lucky as I worked in the defense industry then commercial industrial controls and more. Today I'm on a team writing Android and other apps.

The only thing I worry about here is someone thinking that what you asked for would fit in your hat or pocket. We're not that small yet.

This is why for device tracking the device to be tracked cooperates. Otherwise you are looking at passive detection.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

As noted, page width is one way to go at this but the receipts I see today have bar codes, graphics and adverts built in.

My view is without a printer to test with, you just won't know how it will work. I've run into folk that want to do this but didn't have a single receipt printer to test with. Let's hope you are beyond that stage.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Where have you seen such a thing? My background was in defense where we would have passive sensing but I would be guessing what you are thinking here. Share what this sensing would be based on and what gear would be used.

For example one could set up a spectrum analyzer to detect all sorts of RF and then use a "what's different" to detect an active device come into the area and leave. But a sleeping device would emit so little that this would be iffy at best.

Let's hear what science you think would used for this.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Mostly for the benefit of others, there is so much money in 800 and 8xx support that they wage campaigns to get their numbers up on google searches. Not much to automate when labor is cheap. I've been to Asia and other places, my partner in many projects has been to many other parts of the world and I hope I can find a picture of the conditions they work in to share soon.

It is indeed manual work over there so the only way this was cut to a trickle was a spambot.

Is yours online and called DaniBot?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

This sort of plea is not unusual. That is I read it across forums so I take it you either posted widely and didn't like the answer or just didn't find them.

Anyhow, you can not be a passive user of this technology today. You must be able to get your stuff on backups (more than one, because stuff fails) and then if you suspect an intruder be ready to factory reset anything suspect.

Almost all spy software will not survive that.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

The clue here is the job description. Deployment technicians are not going to need much background beyond "That's a keyboard, this is a PC, here's the instructions to install our ready to go image."

I hope you know how many of these shops operate as to deploying images. If you know what they mean by deploying images, we're halfway there to you being a deployment technician.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Simply something you learn over time. You can't tell folk it will work until you get the printer and test it. There are new to this programmers that will not accept this but time and customer complaints will correct this thinking.

Small world. I'm on a team working on Android Apps using ... Android Studio. One of the best things about Android Studio (AS) to me is that when I run it from AS over the USB link, when it crashes I get to see what line it crashed on and can see what variables and more are at the time of crash.

We're all new at some point so my feedback is to run your app over USB or if possible the emulator so you can trace back to what caused the crash.

When the office asked me for better formatted code I asked them to pick one out of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indentation_style

Only eight styles but what did they do? Create yet another style. Even went so far as to task someone to write the company code style book.

Result. One crazy person (the one that had to write the style) and a few less employees as what happens when war breaks out.

Me? Just nodded and keep coding. Those that got hung up on style no longer work there. Fired for non-production or other reasons.
The perils of being in a commercial setting. In a more academic setting the ones the took on style over production would likely have survived.
