I write articles for another site, and today came across this useful contribution about useful scripts etc for webmasters.
http://www.thinktankarticles.com/articles/480/1/Tracking-Web-Site-Performance/Page1.html
I recalled having contributed tp this thread some time back, and thought this article may be of some interest to others.
The article is also featured on the home page of http://www.thinktankarticles.com
Katarey,
I am so GRATEFUL for your quick and effective response! The page is up and running beautifully.
You gave me an opportunity to refine the questionnaire using "Select Options" because the core structure of your code was sound.
If you have the time and inclination take a look at http://www.longerstrongerliving.com/tools/adaptability.htm.
Thanks again!!!!
I'm a rank beginner with Javascript. The offending page is at http://www.longerstrongerliving.com/stresscalc.htm.
On loading the page, there is an "Expected J" at line 13, character 25.
After putting a numeric value in each of the text boxes for the 17 questions, there is an "Object Expected" error, line 148, character 1.
Furthermore, the "Total Score" text box stubbornly refuses to display anything, despite the numerous wild guesses I have made about code.
Are there any gurus willing to take a look and offer some welcome advice?
Marketing is an ongoing challenge! My site at http://www.progressenterprise.com does not rank well for the most coveted search terms like "resume", "CV" or "Curriculum Vitae". However some 2nd and third level phrases such as "resume templates" do quite well on MSN and Yahoo. I also subscribe to a couple of relevant forums (this one and www.citehr.com) and have achieved quite a high hit rate over the 12 months the website has been in operation.
I am now experimenting with the idea of selling banner space on the home page and other more prominent pages (several have a PR of 3, not that that means much!).
I've only just put this up on the site, so I'll let you know how it goes.
I'm also thinking about offerring the site as a market-place for people with related resume, career or personal/professional development products.
The website is not sufficient to pay me a reasonable salary at this stage, so it is tricky to manage time and site development. Good thing I love the work!
Only a PR3 Ranking! You poor thing. :) My site has been up since March 05 and I'm still bumming along on a PR0. I'll be breaking out the champagne when I achieve PR1.
Those inbound links are VERY hard work!
I've broken out the champagne!! I'm now a PR3 !!!!
Did you connect the original drive to the same connector tab when you removed the second drive again?
It sounds as if you may not have set the "master" and "slave" settings on the drives correctly. If so, this would be a 10minute job for the local computer shop.
STOP! My brain is hurting!
If it's a legal copy of XP, contact Microsoft. I believe that there is an inbuilt limit on the number of times you can install XP to minimise piracy. Sorry I can't help explain why it works on another computer, other than to guess that your registry has recorded previous installations.
Try this help page on microsoft - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341
I have the same problem with my site at <URL SNIPPED> (PR 3/10). I think it is because Google index more sites, and they do it more regularly so the competition is stiffer. Google index my site almost daily, MSN about every 2 - 3 weeks and Yahoo every 4 - 6 weeks. Google also index more of my pages. I can't recall where I read this statistic, but Google is used by about half internet searchers, with Yahoo accounting for about a third and MSN most of the rest.
I've been experimenting with different things, such as when I post to a forum I try to include some of my keywords, like Resume, Curriculum Vitae or CV with my link to see if this affects the relevance of the link.
The other thing to be aware of is you probably have more Google links than show up when you do a backlink check. I've just been reading that Google has started to deliberately hide the number of backlinks as a reaction to various SEO techniques which undermine Googles attempt to deliver relevant search results.
The moral of the story sseems to be focus on good content, relevant to your keywords, and beprepared for a long wait!
Incidentally, my site had a PR value of zero for about 4 months. I got a bit depressed about this until I read that Google only update PR every 3 - 4 months. Then one day, BINGO, I was …
Thanks for the reply re "link:domain" on Yahoo. This is a new one to me. I used the format link :<URL SNIPPPED> and got a much more satisfying array of Resume, curriculum vitae - cv - links than on Google.
<NAME SNIPPPED>
<URL SNIPPPED>
Thanks for this reply. That's a bit encouraging!
I'd love to hear some theories about why Google is so stingy with the backlinks credited to websites. Although my Resume website has 101 links across the internet (according to Google) only 17 of these are credited as backlinks.
Any ideas on what makes the baclinks count?
Hi all,
Let's all talk about how well/or not so well our forums are doing. Tell each other what you have done that is making it successful or unsuccessful. Also, with your post please list what type of site your forum relates to. For example, mine relates to Movies.
I'm using a Bravenet Forum (free) but as usual visibility is an issue. Only a couple of people from the "outside" have left messages. Check it out on << url snipped >>.

Hello im looking for some script to put on my site such as:
PageRank Checker
Keyword Density Analyzer
Link Popularity Checker
Meta Tag Generator
Search Engine Position Tool
Search Engine Saturation
or any other similar
if you know any where i can get these please help
Try using the code from this page : http://www.prchecker.info/ on your own web pages.
The only weakness is that it doesn't give a "live" reading of PR. There is a link at the top of http://www.prchecker.info/ to do a live check whenever you want.
I have some coding on my home page, http://www.progressenterprise.com for a Bravenet hit counter and the Google Page Ranking tool.
When I run my search engine optimisation tool it always picks this code up as an alert, with no explanation.
Can anyone advise whether having these items on my page adversely affects search engine rankings?
Well CSCgal - to me, you are an IT Goddess! You have a script that partially works. You actually know something about the required scripting. You probably know what RSS stands for. I'm envious!
I know that RSS is useful, almost mandatory now, but what I need is the complete idiot's guide to setting up RSS so that MY content is syndicated. I've trawled Google at length, but writers can make English read like Swahili.
You know the kind of help I mean....really simple, like;
"You put the left leg in,
you put the left leg out,
you put the left leg in an' shake it all about,
You do the hokey-pokey and you turn around...
That's what it's all about"
Can anyone tell how can i get my PR increase to atleast 5 .
<< url snipped >> My website has only 3 PR.
Regards

I hate spamming too, but I have some sympathy for beginning web businesses who don't have a zillion dollars marketing budgets, and without a working crystal ball really have no idea how to register anywhere respectable on search engines (who seem to spend their time brewing up new ways of making visibility impossible). I don't spam - I've done as much as I can by way of site design and amateurish attempts at optimisation, used free link exchanges (most of whom don't seem to count with Google), press releases, newspaper ads, free online classifieds etc etc etc and all I can say is, "Thank God I've got a day job!". Although I spend more time on my site than I do at my salaried job. I'm beginning to agree with the notion that search engines should be structured around location and business type, because at the moment, the big guys are winning hands down!
Thank you for this tip. I'll check it out.
Link swap is a good way to increase the visibility of your web site. On my web site on my links page there is a link at the bottom of each page (Axandra web site promotion software) this link on my site will take you to a great program for building links on your web site. It is easy to use but not free, there is a one-time purchase of the software and I found it to be very reasonable for a small business owner just starting out to promote his web site. I would recommend looking into this as a long term investment into your website. Hope this helps you out
I'm not using banners on my site << URL Snipped to Comply with Forum Rules >>
What do you think about link swapping as a strategy. Do you know of any free link swap sites?
