its WINDOWS for 9x and XP
WINNT for NT and 2k
(2003 and vista unknown)

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

your firewall may be blocking it.

are you using the xp firewall or something else (mcaffee?)

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Note In this command, Drive is the hard disk drive where Windows XP Professional is installed, and WinDir is the folder where Windows XP Professional is installed

/g is a switch (an option passed to the essentutl command)

Replace "Drive:\WinDir" with wherever windows is installed (99% of the time thats "C:\WINDOWS" but it might be different if your install was an upgrade from windows 2000)

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

the term in the licence is "system critical component" which MS generally infers means the motherboard

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Here is your answer:

if you have a retail (expensive, store baught) copy of XP you can install it on a new PC if you remove it from the one it was on before

if your copy of XP is OEM (came with the pc) it is ilegal to install it on a different computer.

Your dell copy is OEM.

Is it new or secondhand?

if its been set up before you dont need the CD

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

please provide more info.

is it NT,2k,XP pro, vista or server 2003 ?
Do you have the OS cd?
What service pack?

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I have the WRT54G-C (compact)

Just to note, older laptops and PDAs have wireless "b" whereas newer ones have "g". You need to set the wireless mode to "mixed" to let these machines connect

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

If you buy SAMS VB6 in 24 hours book you get VB6 WM free. In the WM edition you cant make .exe files to share but you cab run the programs from within VB itself.

VB.NET express is free too

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

yeah, i must admit, ive only enconutered this with linux. maybe windows is special.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Remaking the boot partition [C:] rewrites the master boot record for the disk

no it doesnt. E.g if you delete all partitions from a a linux system GRUB is left in the MBR.

you use fdisk /mbr for that

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Go into solution explorer, right click on the project and choose Add Existing

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

yeah most games need 128mb (256 is better)

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Card or driver. I had this issue when i used the windows default one instead of the proper ATI driver but another machine had similar issues (green squares) caused by a card damaged by overheating

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Its potsgre or my SQL if i remeber right (dani was discussing it a while ago in a thread about speed)

yay i was correct

quick question, do you use apache 1 or 2 and php 4 or 5?

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

i would like to know what is the database that is being used at the backend, i guess it is oracle.

Its potsgre or my SQL if i remeber right (dani was discussing it a while ago in a thread about speed)

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

if you want to resize your partitions or make / delete them (slight risk of data loss!!!!!) then you should get a program called GParted. Its the linux equivilent to Partition Magic and is available via synaptic

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

as with regards to installing from source code on ubuntu:

to do so you must install the "build-essential" metapackage

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

you arent in trouble if you made a seperate one. Using the mount command you can mount whatever directory you want onto that partition. To make it permenent you need to edit the fstab file.

let me explain:

on my system i have debian (similar to ubuntu) and it has 2 partitions and one partition holds /home and the other one holds everything else.

(Home is like c:\docuiments and setings is on XP, its where all your music etc... lives)

the home is 30gb and the other one is 10gb. (3-6gb is enough to hold the rest of the system)

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

you cant . In linux there is no real single instillation directory - the correct things just always go to the correct places.

some data goes to /etc
some to /usr - things like print spool also the webserver root gors to /var/www
/sbin is system
/bin is commands
/boot is kernel
/dev is where devices live (e.g the cd can be /dev/hdc)
/lib is shared libaries
/home is user area
/mnt mounted filesystems
/opt user-installed programs like kde
/root roots home
/tmp temporary files

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

oh well if you were going to get a new motherboard here are some things to beware:

1) if your copy of XP is an OEM one (came with your PC or you baught it for cheap) it is legally tied to the hardware and changing the motherboard would render the licence invalid

2) if you change the motherboard you will most likely have to ring up MS to activate it and explain that you are not a pirate. Every time you activate XP it remembers that systems hardware profile.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Are you sure the motherboard actually broken?

I was sure my MSI motherboard was broken, i had no sound, no video and no onboard NIC but all i needed to do was get the newest chipset drivers

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

i cant seem to find it, i think it was one of the ones you have to request. (i got it with a graphics tablet). Hopefully it will be included in SP3

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Look on Mses website. There was a hotfix a while ago to fix HID BSOD's in XP

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

if I ping their mail server from our network, the ping fails. If I do it from home, it works, and also I get a totally different ip address on our network than when I ping from home.
Is this a problem with our DNS server?? Hope that makes sense. Please help.

Isnt that due to NAT?

e.g

my ISP assigns me the public ip 62.1.2.3 (i just made that up). and if I were to have a webserver with 2 network cards (one public (62.1.2.3) and another local (192.168.1.1) and i were to ping it from the local etwork i would get the IP 192.168.1.1 whereas if i were to ping its full domain name (or ping it from outside the lan) i would get 62.1.2.3

and i have my NAT capable router to forward all mail requests to a mailserver on my LAN (lets say, 192.168.1.2) therefore if i were to ping 62.1.2.3: [whatever port it is for pop] i would actually be pinging 192.168.1.2

does that make any sense?

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

yeah thats what it was like for me, i think the cables got loose when it was dropped. did you drop yours?

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I had a thinkpad that once got random black lines coming from both sides and the screen used to wobble (sounds like whar you have). I replaced the inverter and cable and it worked fine. It only began happening after I dropped it.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

yeah we have the word faggio but its kind of an offensive word (gay people are offensively called fags and mopeds/scooters are seen as smoething of a gay symbol) so we dont use that word alot

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Kind of like a motorbike.

Moped and scooter have the same meaning

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

What is the Farstone Url Blocker and other stuff?

Looks suspicious...

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

if it does that then it probably doesnt detect anything wrong. Post a new HijackThis log.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

sort of except that going to run and typing " sfc /scannow " will keep all your files and programs

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

try it it will check to see if your windows systyem files have been replaced by dodgy versions and if they have, it will replace them with ones from the XP CD.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Paki Bastard

hey!

that is not appropriate!
racism will not be tolerated. This has been reported to the admin staff.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

did you do the sfc /scannow thing i asked about?

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

16 to drive a moped or a bike with a low cc power

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster
jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

wuill that make me lose my data???

no it wont. SFC (system file checker) compares the core windows filwes like winlogon and svchost against the ones on your windows cd (or ones it keeps hidden in a cache) and if they dont match (changed by spyware) then it replaces them with good ones

and yeah, spyware isnt my area.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

my winlogon is 800konly but i have fast user switching off, maybe that makes a difference

if your svchost or winlogon have been replaced by fake spyware ones then heres what you do:

YOU MAY NEED YOUR XP CD!

Close all running apps including msn, bittorrent etc....

go to run

type sfc/scannow

Leave it until it is done then reboot.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

18? Its 16 here but its being put up to 18 soon

we can drink at 18 too but have to wait until 18 to drive

UK ftw!

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Micro Electronic Circuits and Electrical Engineering sound as if you would be using the serial port (not one of VB6s strong points) or writing embedded applications for that wouldnt something like C or Assembley be more appropriate?

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

yes, also how do you have the mailserver set up? (you have got a mail server set up, right? youd be amazed the number of n00bs who just expect PHP to be able to magically send mail)

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

no svchost is a normal part of windows but it is possible that it may be hijacked by spyware

i suggest you go and get all the critical windows updates. I checked and saw that they are a number of fixes designed to reduce memory leakage from svchost

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

i had like 80 tabs open lol

heres a link:

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

dont see anything suspicious but you are definately using more ram that you should be..... compare it to mine

download something called HijackThis and run it. Make sure you choose the options to save a log file. DO NOT SELECT TO "FIX" ANYTHING JUST YET!

post the logfile here.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

So no actual deaths?

yeah but thats th same for many things

no-one dies from smoking, they die from its effects (cancer etc...) in the same way that no-one dies from AIDS, they die from other things because they have no immune system

and secondhand smoke is pretty bad, i have friends who work in pubs/clubs and they get really wheezy and sick and they dont smoke

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

because of the fact that campfires are outside so you arent forced to inhale its smoke

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Are you serious? =/

sarcasm

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

you are supposed to have more than 1 svchost and they are supposed to use quite a lot of ram, bit it is true that sometimes they can be affected by viruses

when idle my svchost uses about 45mb of ram

1) get all the newest windows updates
2) tell us how much memory you have and post a screenshot of the "processes" tab in task manager
3) run a full virus scan
4) look out your xp cd, we may need it later

now is the time to fess up if your XP is a pirate copy as if you attempt to get any ms updates using one, you will get into trouble
