you would be amazed the amount of people ho would do something like that

some builders killed themselves near us by running a petrol generator indoors

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

actually regular fires have a lot of CO too, thats why you must get your boiler serviced and not do something dumb like have an indoor bbq

its the tar and nicotene thats bad for you

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I dont think it would kill a small child but there is respected research that secondhand smoke can lead to cot death

gram by gram it is more deadly. nicotene is what makes the nightshade plant toxic.

quote from my biology textbook:

Nicotine is one of the most popular stimulants in the world (besides caffeine) but is often overlooked as one of the most toxic substances known to man.

40-60mg of nicotene could kill a healthy adult and in these high doses, it's properties mimic those of cocaine (which has a lethal dose of 95.1 mg/kg when administered to mice). In fact, the lethal dose of nicotine is 50 mg/kg for rats and 3 mg/kg for mice. Within the blood concentrations greater than 5 μg/ml may be fatal.

Nicotine exists as a colourless liquid which changes colour to yellow and brown on contact with air or slowly with light. It has a faint odour of tobacco and it also has a sharp, burning and persistent taste and is toxic if swallowed, very toxic in contact with skin and toxic to aquatic organisms.

Absorption of nicotine occurs within a few seconds from the tongue and retina of the eye. It is slower through the stomach and the skin. If fatal doses are taken nicotine, once in the system causes the following symptoms (People poisoned by organophosphate insecticides experience the exact same symptoms)

1. Burning in the mouth and throat, increased secretion of saliva. Parched throat.
2. Head aches, stupefaction, dizziness, indistinctness of vision and hearing, photophobia, coldness of the extremities, and enforced evacuation of the bowels.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

no

nicotene is more toxic than cyanide by the way

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

use Cedega. Costs money but rocks for games - it uses a custom directx wrapper so you get good games performance

its a big download and you can configure it to use the web help instead, you can always install at a later date too

How do you know they are "facts"?

because you can set up a simple experiment which im sure about every high school student has seen.

put a cigarette at one end, and crate a vacuum at the other and in between put your tests in test tubes. using glass pipes to connect them

the lime water goes cloudy (shows presence of carbon dioxide)

the other thing changes colour (shows presence of carbon monoxide)

the indicator solution changes (cant remembder if it went acid or alkali)

the cotton wool went black / yellow in very little time at all due to tar, much likes ones lungs do

ive seen a pair of smokers lungs cut open, there was so much tar in there (tar is a carciogen too)

theres all the scientiic evidence you want to prove that smoking is, on the whole, bad for you.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

have you got the update rollup?

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

you know how you get events like form1_load which you can then put code under? you can make one for form1_terminate by using the combo boxes at the top of the code editor, they list all the controls and possible methods.

i had a similar bug with linux before, but i never got it solved... tell me, does it work if you leave it for a while (over an hour). also, does it not work at the login screen or the desktop? because i thaught that win2ks security features only loaded minimal services at login time to prevent keyloggers etc...

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

but it works fine in the BIOS?
maybe its just a win2k bug?

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Ok i know that in XP you need to go admin tools -> services and enable the Human Interface Device service or something like that. Maybe a similar service exists in windows 2000?

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Simple answer : you cant do it very easialy using anything less than XP SP2

Better answer: You dont use windows own configuration tools. They arent for wireless. You need to use the manufactures software to configure the card (if they have any available for windows 98)

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

256 apparently . i told him that a livecd would run slow on that and that it would probably be usable when installed but would slow down considerably with a few windows opened

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

i think you can boot the floppy then remove ot and swap it for the cd drive when it asks you?

and yes linux will get all your drivers (usually). Only exceptions are usually Nvidia/ATI graphics cards. It will install a standard one instead of the official one which is slow for games etc... but works just fine otherwise

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

But it's war! Look at Iraq, and the war on terror.. we have not done as well as we thought. Why?

IMHO the reason were doing crap is as you are too heavy handed

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

we have the same problem here

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

our government gets like 60% of its taxes from alcohol and tabacco so i doubt they would ever have an all out ban. here a small pack of cigarettes is like £5 (£10?)

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I like the Microsoft Press "Step By Step" range. I have used these for Visual basic and so I assume there would be an ASP.NET version.

Sounds like you broke your Xserver codnfiguration file by changing the res. Go to a text console by holding down control+alt + f2 and then use dpkg to reconfigure your X server.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

the wizard will ask you for your resolution, type of mouse. colour depth etc....

after it is done push control+alt+f7 to get back to the graphical environment then restart X by holding down control+alt+backspace

Have a look at my tutorial for setting up a LAMP server on debian/ubuntu. It details exactly what packages you need to apt-get and how to change the MySQL root password.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

you will need your windows cd

there is a command called System File Checker that can replace your windows files which have been infected with stock ones (your winlogon)

go to run and type: sfc /scannow

it may not tell you if was sucessful or not. Just let it complete, then reboot.

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

there are about 300 different linuxes. some are easy to use, some are hard, and some are very specialised

A good, general purpouse linux "distribution" for beginners is Ubuntu. You will need 256 (preferably 512) ram and a Pentium 3 or above to use it properley (if it runs xp well it should run linux)

Ubuntu is a "livecd" which means that you can try it out without installing first, in order to see of you like it and if it detects your hardware.

Beware that installing linux may delete windows!

If you decide to continue, you need to download the .iso image (usually free). Its about 700mb. Do not download over dialup.

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Ubuntu offers a service where you can order the cd by mail, i think.

You will then burn the .iso image to a blank CDR (not CDRW!). You do not burn it like you would a usual file, you need to burn it as an image. Some programs like Nero offer this facility but if not, there are many free programs which can do it.

To look at a list of linux distributions and read review look here:

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

yeah 7zip is good for unzipping .tar files etc...

jbennet 1,618 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Also bear in mind that some old versions of turbo c++ and nearly all versions of Visual Studio do not adhere to the standard
