What inspires you to maintain the pursuit of geeky knowledge?...

my two-cents' worth:

One attitude that I have is that I always want to impress myself, and when I do get to impress myself on something I did and/or know it doesn't last that long. Which makes me start searching for other ways do impress myself again... Applying this attitude, I always tend to pressure myself on learning more things. Since I'm very much into computers, I tend to concentrate my thoughts on learning more about computers...

I think that what inspires me to maintain the pursuit of 'geeky' knowledge...

'Do not let a day pass without learning something new!'

Of what I remembered, this thread started off with a question on why the MS forums are having more participants than the non-MS forums... now, I'm wondering how and why it became a debate on which OS is better... ???

apparently, he cannot get past the logon screen though.

Yeps, I can't get past the logon phase... but anyway, I took the HDD and put it to another computer, backed-up my files, then reformatted the dumb HDD and reinstalled fresh... thanks anyway... but in case it happens again, what could I possibly do to fix it? any ideas?

This just happened yesterday without me doing anything at all...

here's the problem: I start up win2k, then I log onto it, then an error message appears that says "your system has no paging file or your paging file is too small." then it gives instructions on how to adjust the paging file. I click on 'ok' then it logs on again, then, shows the s2pid error message again. when I click on 'ok' again, it goes through the same procedure again...

It's nice that it tells me how to adjust the paging file coz it says that it is the problem, but how the hell am I gonna get to adjust the paging file if i can't get past the logon?

Anybody? Help? Urgent?

here's what I have: win2k +SP4, AMD K6-2 500, 4G HDD

What I'm amazed at is how a 6 year old knows more about configuring Windows than her parents. I went to my friend's house and her cousin knew more about computers than when I was 14. Yikes!

It must be sumthin we should be proud of then... This only implies that the human race is getting smarter by the generation, and it'll be only a few more generations when star trek fantasy becomes a reality...

It could be the CD-R! Sometimes, there are blank CDs that have a maximum write limit... I once bought some, unintentionally, coz they're cheaper... most of the time, the max write speed is written on the blank CD.

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

I once used an old yamaha CD-RW drive with Nero Burning ROM. It wont detect the CD-RW Drive. It only works on Adaptec's EZ cd creator. maybe you're having the same problem that i had years ago.

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

would you believe that most ordinary people who uses computers don't even know how to use the MS-DOS shell? then, how would you expect them to use *nix? I always wanted to install linux on my pc, but my brothers/sisters/parents wont be able to use them. since they use it only for surfing, chatting, and word processing.

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

ERRATA:

what i meant in my last post was, you'll probably have to download everything, sort it out, and then you'll know which is which, (useless and useful)... Then maybe you can just discard the ones you don't need..

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

Thanks...

and so on. Keep in mind that this is a very simplistic example. Try doing a search on Google for more in-depth examples/tutorials.

I'll do this...

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

but switches are better than hubs right? so, i'll probably be using switches... i'll run through the manual, (if i can find it) and try some things... thnx ...

The better question is how do you go about downloading just the usefull information and not the KRAP:?:

Maybe not until you've sorted it out and classified it into useful and useless til' then you'll which is crap and which is not...

those were the days, :) well, kids today would never think of running around and chasing each other all day means fun... and during my younger years (dang, i hate saying that) all you have to do to find your friends was go out of the house, but most of the time they go to your place and call you out...

but then again,

Soon these days of mine will be in the past too, my descendants will laugh when...

It's a cycle, we used to think our folks had a boring childhood compared to us. Our kids will think the same... and again, and again, and again...

:) Let's just make our childhood worth the while...:)

Straight from my physics book:

prefix, symbol, power
kilo-, k = 10^3
mega-, M = 10^6
giga-, G = 10^9
tera-, T = 10^12
peta-, P =10^15
exa-, E = 10^18
zetta-, Z = 10^21
yotta-, Y = 10^24

Just in case you were wondering what is after tera, now if i can only find a store that has a HD with a yottabye of space

Can you combine them? somthing like megayottabytes? how i wish i had one...

No offense taken. Actually there is often some confusion about this. As far as I have been able to determine, one bit is reserved for offset (used to indicate whether seeking forward or backwards in a file), which limits an individual file to 2 GB.

is that 2 GB for FAT32 or NTFS???

Then we can't talk to you and make fun of the way you were kicked off the site.

hehehe, don't worry. I won't be posting rubbish... so u can still talk to me and make fun of me... :P And another reason why I wouldnt do that is because I still have a lot to learn from you guys...

and yes, dani, where's ur 22 arrows?? :)

As a rule of thumb, I do not store personal information on my main HD's. Instead I have a external HD...

Hmmm, this would be a good use for those keychain USB drives! I am considering buying one and this sounds like another good reason (encrypted file of course)

GrimJack

USB Thumbdrives are really useful. I have one that can store up to 250MB. And its plug n' play. After you plug it into a free USB drive, a new drive letter pops up for the USB drive.

FAT: you can specify only down to which folder to share, and you can add a password to it, but anyone on the LAN who has the password can get into it.

Can you do that to FAT32 on win2k? I mean, share a specific file?

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

Thank you very much for the info RC_Razor. what if my win2k crashes and I want to boot from a floppy? is there a bootdisk that can access an NTFS? if there is, then I'll probably have to repartition my HDD to NTFS since everything you've said sums up everything to the NTFS being way much better than FAT/FAT32.

== I just need to know, I'm sure I'll be needing the info in the future. ==

Whenever I install win2k over win98/ME or I start on a clean install of win2k/XP, I always choose FAT32. This is mainly because I'm familiar with it, and NTFS can't be seen on win98/ME when I last had a dual boot operating system. What's the difference between NTFS and FAT32? which is better? should I use NTFS over FAT32 on a win2k/XP system? can I view/share files from a computer with NTFS using a computer with FAT32 (meaning win98/ME) over a network?

Please enlighten me...

If I would ever need to resize a boot partition sitting on a server array, I wouldn't be using any third-party tool such as that. Maybe it's just me (and it probably is) but I wouldn't trust that sort of procedure to a program to do. I'd rather destroy what was created and start over cleanly.

I agree, I'd rather backup everything that needs backing up and start over a new clean installation.

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

whenever i reinstall a fresh copy of my OS, i usually delete the old one 1st. then i boot from a diskette then start my installation. in doing so, i'm always sure that i dont leave duplicate useless, space-wasting files...

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

As for me, I really don't give a crap on what software is used. What's really important is the contents of the forum, and secondly, how is it administered. Because the main reason you read posts is because you want to learn something. right???
