And yes, the DVD RW you selected is pretty good. I have an ASUS DRW-1608P2S, but that is nothing but a rebranded version of the Pioneer DR-111D.

ATAPI - Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface -- is a standard that all IDE drives follow. Hence, any mobo which has IDE ports will support ATAPI.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

It isn't a bug as far as I know. This happens when the ddrive itself goes kaput. I've had 3 drives do this to me, all of them were later confirmed to be bad.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

For such a spec, I'd suggest you go up to Windows 98. The lappy won't be able to handle any other OS upward of Windows 98.

I'd say it depends on the nature of the crime. If the criminal has done something violent, like murder or bodily harm, with the intent of doing it again, he should be imprisoned indefinitely.

If he rapes a woman, he should be forced to undergo hard, rigorous labor for atleast 20 years. If after this time, he shows a violent disposition, or is a threat to society, he ought to be hanged

Frankly, education is the key. Parents need to educate the children about the dangers lurking in every corner of the internet. They should be told in no uncertain terms that giving out personal info online is a strict no-no. Any violation of said rule is grounds for punishment.

System Properties>Advanced tab, under performance, click settings. In the Performance Options dialog box, check the second last option (Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop). This will get rid of your "Highlighted Icons"

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Well, some old, old legacy 16-Bit apps won't run. I'm talking real mode DOS apps here. And that's because WIndows ME onward do not include legacy DOS in the OS. Apart from that, there are absolutely no issues. Heck, I've been able to play the original DOS game, prince of persia without any hitch whatsoever.

If setup recobnises one partition of 300Gig size, it's possible the partition table is corrupt. If that's the case, attach the HD to another working computer, and use a data recovery prog to recover your data. Most importatnly, don't perform any writes on the HD till you recover the data.

yes, i know amd is better for gaming, BUT i kinda tight at budget now.
im thinking of buying the stuff from Newegg.com

as u can see, amd is far more expensive then intel, somehow.

just compare, amd opteron 170 2.0ghz ($396.00) with Intel Pentium D 840 3.2ghz ($348.99)

An opteron is a server class CPU, so it's bound to be expensive. It's in the same league as an Intel Xeon. I was talking about the AMD Athlon64. It's substantially cheaper, is 64-bit. The PentiumD is dual core, but as you have mentioned, this is a budget PC, there isnt any point going for it. Settle for an Athlon64 would be my advice. FYI, the AMD Athlon64 is available in dual core too. Its called the Athlon64 X2.

tell me, isnt the ghz more important then the rest of the specs of a processor?

tell me why i shouldnt go for the pentium d which has greater ghz then the amd?

No, the clock speed (GHz) is not more important than the rest of the procesor specs. Various aspects of a processor contribute to the processor's performance, nit just the speed. Infact, these days, even Intel doesn't market their processors by the clock speed.

i use the pc for mild gaming and more to watching movies, listening to music, graphical interface applications and of course, surfing the net.

In this case, a Pentium D would be overkill for you

as for motherboards, i know msi …

I think this relates to bad RAM. I would recommend that you get your RAM checked for problems. Run memtest86 to be sure. Also, see if you can use your DVD drive on another lappy and see if the problem recurs...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If you can, I'd suggest you get a new board and a PCI-E card. If you're on a budget, see that you get the best card you can afford. That oughta last you for 2 years.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Definitely an Athlon64. Future proof, and outperforms the intel.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If you're going for gaming, might I suggest an AMD Athlon64 processor? AMD has a tendency of outperforming Intel in terms of CPU intensive tasks like games, vid editing and the like. AMD is quite cheaper than it's Intel counterpart aswell.

For the mobo, I kinda prefer MSI, followed by ASUS. See if you can go for these boards

Why're you settling for 256 MB RAM? Suggest you go for 512 MB minimum. If possible, go for 1 Gig

I also suggest a PSU # 400W minimum, with minimum 18Amps on the 12V rail

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Well, as long as there are ventilation slots in the side AND atleast two cooling fans (60 mm), you shouldnt have a problem

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

It's possible the board you bought off ebay is defective ,especially if it's a used board.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

For the not ejecting syndrome, I would guess a fault with the ejection mechanism itself. This requires professional service.

As for the disc not being recognised, are you able to read pre-recorded discs? IF yes, the CDRW could be bad.

Ahh...i really don't know about the old HD's. The earliest I've used is a 2.1 Gig HD. I'm fairly confident the newer ones don't have a speaker. The only sound I've heard from a HD is the dreaded 'click of death'...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Its possible that one of the servo motors in the drive have conked off. In this case, you can either take it in for repair, or get a new drive.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

HD's have a loud speaker? Thats news to me. Do the seagat e ones have a speaker?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Try resetting your CMOS. If your board has a BIOS reset jumper/switch, use it to reset. Else, remove the battery for 15 minutes, reinsert and power up.
