Looks that way!

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Well it won't be England based upon that performance against Wales. I mean, WTF was Lancaster thinking? WTF was Robson thinking? Was anyone left on the England side with 15 minutes to go thinking at all, in fact? I can't get my head around why Lancaster took off all the people who were playing really well, winning England that game, apparently just becuase that was the scheduled time for some other chaps to have a go. I can't get my head around why Robson, with quite a history of making fundamentally wrong decisions at critical times that have cost the match, chose to kick to the corner. I can't get my head around why England cannot play with the passion and determination of Wales.

What I do know is that without that drive, that passion, that will to win at all costs, England ain't winning this world cup (in fact I doubt they will make it out of the pool of death).

Beyond the obvious NZ choice for back-to-back wins, I'd say that both Ireland and (despite that Japanese loss) South Africa are looking good for the final. Wales, sadly, have too many injuries and even though I've said they have the passion and mindset required to win, they made way too many mistakes in that game against England up until the final quarter...

???

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I spoke too soon...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

deboogeek: make that 9 years... :)

deboogeek commented: Actually, I'm here after 8 years. So, it's nearly a decade you've been happily coding. Great! +0
happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

bumholes :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

That lets me add tags, not delete them. You think you can delete a tag, but it reappears when you hit update.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

This already works actually.

Not here it doesn't Prit, even as an admin I appear to have no ability to edit tags in a thread. Unless I'm missing something :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

On the plus side, there certainly seems to have been a drop in spam activity since the new UI went live. I suspect the spamming hoardes don't like it very much :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Mods and (other) admins used to be able to edit tags under the old UI, but that functionality has yet to be coded back into the new one. It's coming real soon though, and then the cleaning up can start with a bit more gusto.

tomorrow I'll code up functionality for moderators to browse/delete/merge tags

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Working now, so looks like it was a quick fix :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

The unread PM counter in the main toolbar (between the finder and chat icons) is stuck on 0 and doesn't change to show new/unread PMs.

Not exactly the most serious of problems, but something to flag for later when you get a chance to check it out Dani.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

When you recall how much 'debate' there has been in the past when the UI hasn't changed anywhere near as drastically, it's hardly surprising that there was going to be a bigger, and more mixed, reaction this time around. Just do what you always do, Dani, by which I mean take it all on board and call the changes as you see them. Historically, this has proven to be a winning strategy as far as UI design is concerned at DaniWeb.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Yep, the little tweaks are improving it all the time Dani. Keep up the good work, it is appreciated by most folk!

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

It was broke, that's the thing. From the viewpoint of traffic generation if nothing else...

Still nothing to add that's really constructive though, you just seem to be repeating the fact that you don't like it without offering specifics as to why or suggestions as to how it could be improved (other than going back to the way it was, which isn't going to happen).

dtpp commented: no it wasnt broken; it functioned as planned............. +0
happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Spot on from Deceptikon, in my never humble opinion.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

misi, I think that's a tad on the harsh side. Anything constructive to offer by way of criticism?

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Oh, and I would add that I imagine if it's decided that the changes have broken it then DaniWeb will revert to something unbroken in pretty short order (not that I think it is broke at the moment, to be honest).

dtpp commented: And here is truth: YES, people do not like this (in this sense its broken); so follow your own words please..... +0
happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Let's put it this way: Dani has never made changes to DaniWeb just for the heck of it, ever in all the years I have known her. She only ever does so if she thinks it will be for the long term benefit of the community. If drastic changes are needed to give DaniWeb a chance of surviving the next year or two then I say let's cut her some slack and give her our support.

Stuugie commented: Yes +0
dtpp commented: completely way round. No drastic change without public survey...... if users do not want the change, just skip it. +0
happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Yep, tagging is the way forward - people just need to get used to it being front and centre in the UI rather than being allowed to merge into the background a bit.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

It sucks. Then you die. Get over it. Get on with it.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

The stickies/pinned posts problem will be resolved over time as we work through the forums and remove those that are no longer required for whatever reason (many are outdated, others are news/editorial that doesn't need to be stuck etc)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

DDoS is also increasingly being used as a diversionary tactic to cover a breach in action.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Hello.

I would suggest you post your questions in the following forums/categories:

  1. https://www.daniweb.com/web-development/31

  2. https://www.daniweb.com/software-development/2

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Hello. Did you have any questions to ask?

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Sorted. If I use my Chromebook Flip in tablet mode, DaniWeb via Chrome browser loses the sidebar :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Can't say it makes much difference to readability to be honest. I like the new poster/signature positioning, and I really like the use of whitespace throughout. I could lose the sidebar, but hey... :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

And relax... the moderator/admin/editorial links are back and all is right in the world :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

And?

Nobody is doing your homework for you here. Post some code, show us what you've done, tell us where you are stuck and then, only then, will we try and help you...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I see that the newsletter archive has vanished in the new UI, but so has the newsletter editing link for producing the new ones. I'm guessing this is on the list for implementation in the coming days, Dani?

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Trying to change my signature, but the edit toolbar doesn't work - clicking on bold or trying to add a link does nothing.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

You will have to do a lot better than that. Can you please explain exactly what the problem is, including platform etc, then someone may be able to help.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

What is Google?

Answer that and it will help you in your quest :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Anything that helps get the encryption message across is 'a.good.thing' and anything that helps reduce costs to encourage adoption/implementation ditto. I've been a fan of the Let's Encrypt project since the get go. I rather like the short-term option (validity of just a month) which can limit threat surface exposure when the almost inevitable first theft of the things occurs.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I doubt it, that request was SEVEN YEARS AGO.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

G'night :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Welcome to DaniWeb

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Good luck, but speaking from my own experience of way too many allnighters I'd say rest is ultimately more beneficial than enthusiasm in the long term. Don't knock yourself out Dani! :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Welcome

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I actually like 'bung of morons' and will be stealing it for use elsewhere should the opportunity arise :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

a bung of morons

Is that the official collective noun? :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Pardon?

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I would hope he has fixed it by now... Check the datestamps.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

What is your old username?

In what way is the 'forgot password thing' not working? Error messages etc would be helpful.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Hank, you guessed wrong - I'm afraid I don't agree that the article should have simply stated "destroy your hard drive and install Ubuntu" - sorry. :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Hank, some good points but for the record I've been working in and writing about 'cyber security' for more than 20 years now. Much of what you take issue with is covered in step 4 of that article - and it's this advice that you are essentially repeating when you state "The only secure remedy is to boot from a non-infected thumb drive or disc; scan and clean your critical data." However, just to clarify:

Some, not all, malware is of the rootkit variety and some, not all, is sophisticated enough to hide away totally. Much, not all, of the stuff that does can be dealt with as I said by "booting into a Linux environment via CD/USB and manually identifying and deleting rogue files." Much, not all, can also be dealt with using something like HitManPro Kickstart.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I need someone to wash my van. Using Turtle Wax will be deeply appreciated.

Same reasoning, can't be bothered to do it myself...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Could the mobile thing be chicken and egg with DaniWeb? Make it a better mobile experience and more people will access it that way? Certainly Google seems to take the mobile friendly aspect very seriously these days from what I understand...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

What?

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Looks fine in Chrome here for me.
