Ahh.... NVIDIA customer (so-called) support....

I'm still waiting for them to reply me on f6 drivers. $%#@*
2 weeks and counting.

I wonder if they would reply me on this "AA=major slowdown" thing.
Probably would instruct me to install the drivers I already have installed. Or say something like "we don't build graphic cards".
Right, they just build GPUs and make drivers for them. Nothing to do with video cards at all.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Seems to me that they (ms) can write anything they can think of in EULA and that all kinds of gibberish are considered to be copyright or whatever law.

And how do you call something "agreement" if your only options are to apply or back off? It should be called EULU (End-user license ultimatum). More apropriate.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

IF it's not CPU overheating, which btw would result in extreme slowdowns instead of reboots, it can be either chipset or VGA.

I suggest that you use Asus Probe II to monitor the temps.
You should check out the event log to see if anything is recorded there that would indicate possible reason for the reboots. Click on the "run" and type "eventvwr.msc /s" (without quotations).

If you find anything suspicious, feel free to post the entry here.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Yup, (AA settings in control panel = 0ff - 2x - 2xQ - 4x - 8xS)

It seems to me that AA is not hardware-driven function, or my video drivers (latest) have HUGE bug.

Anyway, I think that we are miles off the topic here.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Here is what I think:

You can't do more damage than it has been already done. If it is not working, one wire being cracked or whole motherboard being fried does not make any difference. The sell value is the same ($0). Who wants to buy a broken laptop, besides some (extremely rare) people that are collecting laptop parts for building their own? And giving it away might be considered as an insult, and not as a nice gesture.

Your only risk is that I'm wrong regarding the cause, and you end up paying for the part that doesn't need replacement and the service man if you don't feel brave enough to do it yourself.

Bottom line is, worst-case scenario equals present situation minus couple dozens of $ for the expenses.

It's your decision.

FSAA as Full Screen Antialiasing, not Anisotropic filtering.

Haven't run FC in a long time, but I think that there is no FSAA in FC. There is one in N4S most wanted. Made my screen blurry and my eyes hurt.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Try using Asus Probe II. That way you can monitor the temperatures and voltages, and one of those are causing reboots, you would see which one.

All except VGA. Temp for VGA can be monitored in advanced settings in display properties. I have NVIDIA VGA and GeForce tab in that settings. On that tab I can see current VGA temp.

I bet it is VGA overheating.

Anyway, if the heatsink isn't properly seated, it won't pick up heat from the chip below, thus it will be cold to the touch, while the chip is overheating.

It has to be TIGHT, and thermal paste layer should be VERY thin.

nForce 4 has a nasty bug with SATA II HDs. I speaking from my own expiriance. I had to do some magic tricks to install the XP on my system. Sufice to say, it included degrading to SATA I and f6 drivers didn't (and still don't) work!

Had to beg the Maxtor to email me special firmware upgrade that made SATA II mode possible on my HD AND nForce 4.

It has hardware-based firewall (ActiveArmor) that tends to corrupt data on some systems. I had no such expiriance, but google it a little, and you'll find countless forums on that topic.

But, it is OCer's choice and hell of the chipset.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

You say your GPU is 430/900. Mine is 400/1000. 400 being core frequency.

"Aluminium Association" drops fps drasticaly on my rig. And not just FC. Doom 3, Quake 4 (although, I lack the system memory to run Q4 without extensive paging, Activision said "You have only 1 gig of memory"). FSAA doesn't do much damage, but I tend to turn that off too. Makes screen blurry.

1600 x 1200
max detail except AA is turned off. Seems that my system doesn't handle AA too lightly.

Is the amount of memory reported in your bios correct?
In general, mixing brands of the memory modules is not the wise thing to do.

If your memory controller is dual channel, then the memory config must look like this:

slot 1 old mem
slot 2 new mem
slot 3 old mem
slot 4 new mem

Did you try booting from windows 98 setup CD? They are bootable.

It seems that your windows installation didn't finish properly. Creating shortcuts is one of the last things that happens during installation. Maybe you should consider reinstalling windows, or repair current installation. Avoid using Floppy boot disk, for it slows down process considerably. Instead either boot from CD or HD with f8 startup menu option "command prompt only" (then type D: <enter> setup <enter>).

To reinstall Windows 98 without formatting the HD, you will need to either rename or delete "win.com" file in windows folder. Otherwise, setup program will refuse to reinstall.

You problem is not having recovery disks.

I suggest that you track down person you bought that laptop from, and request the disks, for they belong to you. They are to be as considered part of the laptop, because Microsoft says:
"...the pre-installed operating system license is only valid when used on the original machine for which it was first installed..."

That goes for recovery disks too.

It is diameter of the disc inside (not the whole drive nor the jack), if I'm not mistaken. Laptops = 2.5 inch, Desktops = 3.5 inch.

It is good that the wealthy do give to so many charities as well as hospital buildings etc.

Q. Can I transfer my OEM Windows XP software to my new PC?
A. No, OEM software is tied to the PC that is installed on. Transfer can only take place if the PC is transferred as well.

Q. Can I install my OEM Windows XP on more than 1 PC?
A. No, Windows XP is licensed per device - this means one licence is required for each device that it is installed on and must be purchased pre-installed on a fully assembled PC.

Aren't we lucky ones that this is the law.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

I took a psych course a very long time ago where the professor was saying that we dream many, many different times every night, with each dream only lasting a couple of minutes, and we only remember the dreams that are significant to us.

I've heard one theory about dreams.

They say that hypothalamus, primitive brain that is common in most creatures, is becoming hyperactive during REM stage and sends all kinds of impulses to cerebral cortex, which then tries to interpret those impulses and the result is the dream. Random images, sounds, thoughts, emotions and all other stimulations that are usually coming from the outer world. Some say that this is a nature's way of "instant replay" of events that happened the previous day, and the soul purpose is to "learn the lesions" twice. It's a survival instinct. And recently people "discovered" that dogs dream too. I have a dog and I had bunch of cats, and I KNOW that they dream too. My dog runs in a sleep almost every time he sleeps. Sometimes he barks too. Same with cats, only they prefer eating in a sleep.

A lot of people don't remember their dreams. That is because they are happening inside short-term memory only and they are gone within next couple of minutes. I know a technique of how to "capture" the dream into the long-term memory, and it's simple. All you have to do is try to remember every detail about the dream when …

I dont know about "Battle For Middle Earth", but I know Farcry.
I have A8N Sli/Athlon64 3700+/Gainward GeForce 7800 GT 512 MB/ 1 G DDR400 and I have (sometimes) poor performance with Farcry. Wooded areas and max. details are too demanding.

If it is not overheating issue, then I think it is memory related. Either voltage is not high enough, or the speed/timings are wrong.
Also, OCing your CPU and/or VGA would result in such behaviour.
I suggest that you set your BIOS settings to defaults (regarding CPU/AGP/Memory speed/timings). If those settings do not solve your problems, try manual increase of memory voltage. Some memory modules (like Gail) demand more juice than defaults.

Also, there are lots of bugs and patches for Farcry. Keep that in mind.

If your HD was working fine before, and for no apparent reason seized to work, there could be several reasons for it:

- lack of power - your PSU is starting to loose the output power, or the power cable is not plugged in all the way, or the power cable is damaged. Try replacing the cable if possible.

- SATA cable - could be damaged (some people claim that mere touching the exposed wires is enough to damage the cable). Try replacing the cable.

I apologize for my tone was misunderstood for angry or flamboyant.
I apologize if my opinions were taken as piracy-endorsing.

I deeply resent any form of injustice, including the injustice committed by pirate-endorsing opportunists that use non-licensed OSes, against group of programmers that work for Microsoft (including Bill Gates himself) developing very software that those opportunists actually use.

I also apologize for abusing daniweb by creating the alternate account, and thus bypassing the ban. You have to understand that it is very unpleasant feeling not being able to speak, especially after (wrongful) accusation.

I understand that I have nobody to blame for it but me, for not making an effort to represent my thoughts and opinions in their true light.

I know that PSU for desktop hardly exceeds $50, but for a laptop, you depend on the laptop manufacturer only, if you want the original piece replaced and the prices of such detail parts are not displayed at their web-site.

Good thing is that you can order any piece there is in laptop (at least, that's the story with HP's laptops). Each piece has it's code, and by that code you can order a replacement. I'm afraid that, after that, you are pretty much on your own, since every manufacturer will not be responsible of your deliberate actions with your laptop.
Well, it's not working and there is no warranty to be void (unless you get the previous owner to act on your behalf), so there isn't much to lose.

It is hard for me to guide you step-by-step if I'm not in the same room. Hell, I didn't even know what that laptop looks like before I looked it up on Gateway's web site.

I know that it sounds somewhat scary, but opening a laptop and replacing a part in it isn't such a big deal after all. If I managed to fix my monitor several times with nothing but soldetron, I guess anyone can do it.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

I know, I know.... they introduce new OS, but that OS is not necessarily predestined to complete success.
But, then again, with MS OSes being pre-installed on the vendor PCs, kind of paints the picture of MS behavior.

Edit:

Bottom line is: I've managed to make a hot thread. *crowd cheers*

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Quick replies:

I've heard all those piracy arguments before Chaky, and they're all complete bollocks.

So are the anti-piracy arguments. Read the MS FAQs regarding hardware upgrade.

Try running a computer without an operating system and see what all the "nothing" an OS does really is.

OS has no meaning without a software that needs that very OS to work. Therefore, OS is nothing without that software.

Don't you get the driver CD when you are buying a piece of hardware? So don't you think that the cost of the driver is also included for the price that you paid for the hardware? Okay it is not $150, but it has a price right?

- All drivers are free of charge. It is in the hardware manufacturer's interest that they remain free of charge. If you download driver for the hardware that you don't have, you won't be regarded as a pirate.

Well, if you go back in time, that would mean DOS 1.0 is also the same as Vista?

- MS DOS 1.0 did evolve into Windows ME. Only every stage of evolution was rigorously charged for. Windows NT 3.51 (followed by NT4, XP, Vista) are not related to the MS-DOS 1.0 - Windows ME. They are completely different architecture. And NOT genuine Microsoft design.

I suggest that you do get a second opinion. And try to find someone that you can trust. If I was a repair man looking for a quick profit, I would say "your $250 mobo is fried" knowing that the cause is $20 circuitry.

Also, check if the warranty is still valid for the laptop, regardless of the absence of the battery that has 1 year warranty.

Hmm.... What's the point of having a laptop if you can't move it beyond the radius of a cable?

Mobility Radeon is a graphic card that is embedded in the motherboard. If it is toasted, then the motherboard is useless.
Again, I repeat, it either works or it doesn't work. There's no middle area. It doesn't go dead, and then it starts to work again, even if it is for a minute or so.

Remember, video card has it's own memory chips that need proper voltage.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

OS is not software in a same sense as MS Office or Corel Draw is. With software like Corel Draw you can DO something. You can produce something that you need for your business. With OS you can't do squat. It is base software and it is NEEDED by windows based software, so if you want to do ANYTHING with, say $2000 gear and $30000 AutoCAD, or $50 video-game, you need to chip in $150 royalty to MS. It is as trivial as the hardware drivers. Imagine paying $150 for each and every driver you have.

Other thing:
If they make OS with flaws (and they do), and they charge money for it (and they do), they should fix any flaw there is. Sure, they are releasing quite bit of fixes (remember, KBs have 6 digit numbers), why all the sudden Vista? Or why XP in the first place? Or NT 4? Or Me? Or 98? Or 95?

My point of view is: OS is OS. XP has same meaning as Vista or NT4.

My point here is: Why do I have to pay for OS that I've already paid for? Several times!

Some basic rules of commerce:
- If it is sold, then it is product.
- If it is a product, then I expect some guarantee for it.
- If XP is so badly designed that Vista or whatever HAS TO replace it, then it is official declaration on behalf …

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Bill Gates is still making up all the excuses to charge once more for something already purchased. And that's pure arrogance.

MS is setting the OS standard for PCs and they are CHANGING IT every few years. Not that the current OS cant's do things future OSes can, but for the soul reason of selling something already sold. Purely because there is no wear-and-tear with software. Only REAL change that is reasonable is 16 bit to 32 bit, 32 bit to 64 bit and so. But that doesn't occur often enough for MS to make billions.
If they are gonna make money on software in general, like with MS Office or MS made video-games, that's something different, but with monopoly on OSes this kind of behavior is purely arrogant and greedy. Those two characteristics are contradictory of image that they are trying to make with charities.

Don't get me wrong, I am 100% pro-charity and I think that it is a good thing that he is giving up so much money, but when I think of today's necessity for PCs in business and every day life, and MS behavior with OS licensing, I can't find any words of recommendation for him.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Unplugg all except power supply, VGA and CPU. (no HD, no optical, no memory...). If you don't get any POST that way, you are looking at faulty mobo/VGA/PSU or some of the cables or VGA aren't plugged right.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

PSU (Power Supply Unit) provides various currents to your motherboard and all of the equipment (2.9 V for memory, 3.3 V, 1.4 V for processor core, 12 V and 5 V for HD, DVD...). Unlike desktop PSU, laptop's PSU are more complicated. They get one voltage from adopter or battery and split it into the needed voltages I've mentioned.

Usually, PSUs fail completely and there are NO activities going on. No fans spinning, no hard drives spinning, no lights blinking... nothing. BUT, PSU can gradually fail. When PSU is failing, it has all the symptoms of a failing mobo. Only when mobo fails, it generally does not "resurrect" every now and then.
With dead mobo you wouldn't get blurry screen like you did. Blurry screen comes ONLY because of insufficient voltage coming to the screen.
And those weird characters you see... that could mean 3 things:

- Memory is failing drastically. In such case you would most probably get memory test error during POST (Power-On Self-Test - the test that every PC is running when started)

- Memory settings in BIOS (Basic Input-Output System) are wrong. That would occur if you've removed original memory module and replaced it with not-so-compatible one. Problems like this would occur immediately after the memory was replaced, and not some time after.

- Memory voltage is too low. In that case, data stored in your RAM gets corrupted, including data in Video memory (one that is represented on screen) …
