Hi
Hoping someone can help. I have a bought a 2nd computer and plugged in a wireless adapter into it. It connects, then disconnects to the computer. In device manager it is there, says its working fine but its in hidden devices. I have used networking wizard and still cant connect to internet. Please help.
Karen.

Hi Karen,

Welcome to Daniweb!

your first computer is that wireless or wired?

and stupid question, but are you using your own wireless router or a neighbours?

lastly, you can't connect to the internet, but is it connecting to the router?

Well.... after spending several hours messing around with my computer I took it to a local repair shop yesterday. In 30 minutes they had the problem solved. Something to do with the master boot record... How mozilla affected the master boot record is a mystery to me :-/

Anyways, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions

Cheers-
Fred

Anytime mate! Glad you managed to get it sorted in the end.

umm, you want to delete the history from your work pc and its locked down?

that means there is a good reason. My guess is that the machine is supposed to be for work use only (not daniweb and facebook!) and you are afraid of getting caught

i will not help you break your companys IT policy and please do not encourage any other members to do so.

That's cool mate, but seeing as the majority of our head office lives on facebook?, i'm not asking anyone to do anything - all i need is some suggestions. If you've read our IT policy you'll relise i'm not doing anything wrong, i just want to clear my history.

and i'm taking legal advice from someone who can't legally drink yet? lol

Hi

Thanks for answering. The computer is a desktop that I built myself about 5 years ago.

When the problem first started I was navigating on a website that I've been to before, where I clicked a link and the window went blank. I then tried to click on the 'start' icon and the toolbar went blank. I left the computer alone for 10 minutes, thinking the comp. was just overloaded but when I came back it was the same screen as before, so I manually restarted the comp. Thats when the rebooting problem started...

Sorry for the long paragraph, just wanted to get all the details out there.

Fred

ok, that's a strange one, bit of a shame it's not a shop one as they have a utility built-in to deal with this, no biggy.

are you getting an error messge or is it just restarting?

Well how amazing, I was once with Orange my phone provider and they have now changed their name to 3. Call centre has moved offshore to India and there is rarely anyone ever there who understands, knows, or is capable of or in a position to help with network/phone/service problems. Easier as always just to fix it myself

Don't get me started on orange, one of my first mobile phones was with orange called them up to register it (this was long ago lol)

> Hello sir i'm thanking you for call us today
- Hi, would it be possible for me to register my phone please?

right boys and girls, could do with some help ASAP here

working on a PC and when i come to defreg the HDD through windows defragger it stops and comes up with this error

'the scan has been cancelled because an error occured on file: c:\windows\systems32\temppf.sys'

does anyone have a clue what the problem could be?

Hi mate,

That could be a page file error, this can be solved in the windows registry at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\SYSTEM\
CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
Memory Management

you can up the size of the pagefile:

C:\pagefile\pagefile.sys 128 256
The 128 is the minimum pagefile size and 256 is the maximum.

however only try if you are comfotable with using registry editor, but try running defrag at bootup first.

Every time I try to start my computer it starts loading Windows and then reboots. When I start up, everything works perfectly until I get to the "Windows did not shut down correctly last time" screen. I'm given the various choices (start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last known good config etc...). No matter which option I choose, Windows begins to start up normally, and right when it would usually go to the login screen, everything shuts down and the computer starts rebooting. Please help!

Thanks!

Hi Fred,

Welcome to Daniweb!

your computer; is it a purchased computer (make & model d.o.p) or a home build?

and is it a desktop of laptop?

as manufacterers usually build methods in to their machines to deal with such events. However these vary from model to model.

Also, can this be linked to anything? i.e after you installed Virgin Media broadband medic for example?

sorry for the essay,

Hi,
I have a personal PC at home running Windows XP, 3.06 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 with 200 GB hard drive space and 512 MB RAM. I bought this a year ago from PC world.

I have noticed that my PC took about 3 mins to start so I decided to remove all the unneeded items on the taskbar and remained with the necessary ones including speaker, and norton anti virus.

I have seen that this has made the difference to the desktop as the desktop starts much quicker but it still is slow in starting up from when I switch it on to when it shows the desktop.

It takes a lot of time when the Windows XP icon shows and the processing line, but when it comes to desktop, its got quicker due to the deletion of unwanted icons.

I worries me to see the slowness because I have got a laptop which is 1.7Ghz, and its got 768MB RAM, and about 10 to 15 items on the taskbar on the bottom right and it takes the same time as the desktop to start.

Do you think more RAM is to be added? MY hard drive is not even half full, not much information is saved anyway. What else could be the reason? Please help me. I have also defragmented my drive.

Thanks.

Good Evening!

your RAM should be fine for what you're doing, I'd have no concerns about you keeping your RAM at 512MB unless …

Hi Leo, no worries mate that's a frequently asked question. If you are using windows XP, Start > Control Panel > users > accounts > add / change password (then remove password once you wish to remove it)

windows vista, Start > Control Panel > User Accounts And Family Safety > User Accounts > Add Windows Password.

And yes mate you can remove it once it's no longer required.

Hope this helps,

MONDAY
8:05am
User called to say they forgot password. Told them to use password retrieval utility called FDISK. Blissfully ignorant, they thank me and hang up. God, we let the people vote and drive, too?
8:12am
Accounting called to say they couldn't access expense reports database.Gave them Standard Sys Admin Answer #112, "Well, it works for me." Let them rant and rave while I unplugged my coffeemaker from the UPS and plugged their server back in. Suggested they try it again. One more happy customer...
8:14 am
User from 8:05 call said they received error message "Error accessing Drive 0." Told them it was an OS problem. Transferred them to microsupport.
11:00 am
Relatively quiet for last few hours. Decide to plug support phone back in so I can call my girlfriend. Says parents are coming into town this weekend. Put her on hold and transferred her to janitorial closet down in basement. What is she thinking? The "Myst" and "Doom" nationals are this weekend!
11:34 am
Another user calls (do they ever learn?). Says they want ACL changed on HR performance review database so that nobody but HR can access database. Tell them no problem. Hang up. Change ACL. Add @MailSend so performance reviews are sent to */US.

I think a representative of Daniweb (a high end moderator or something) should organise something,

I personally don't see why london would be most convenient, people are from all over the UK, and london is at the bottom!

Why can't we all meet in the middle of the UK, or middle of england at least.

I'm from Glasgow, i can imagine a few others are from scotland too.

I recommend somewhere in the middle of England (not so far down at the bottom).

We could have a BBQ/Lan party/meetup for everyone.

Possibly having somewhere that we can stay overnight, for example.

If someone has a nice spot of land, we can all just bring tents and camp out there.
And use the house for electricity if we decided to have a big LAN game, or have some fun anyway :)

Just throwing some ideas about to get more specific feedback from everyone.

Cheers.

London would be a wise choice due to the good rail links, I'm sure happygeek is high enough to be organising it mate; after all, he's pretty much Dani's (hairless :P) sidekick lol

I really like Samsung, LG, and Nokia phones...
I've heard that Motorola isn't as good as people say, almost all of my friends have a Razer and they messed up in the first month. But I do think they're really cool in appearance.

personally you'd be wise to stay away from the motorola's, i bought a pink RZR V3 for my sister when they first came out; looks nice but usless, batter won't last the whole day!

samsung are pretty good, the U600 would be a good buy, also the D600 with 3D sound.

although i currently have an orange SPV M700 (HTC) which is pretty cool, windows mobile 5. whereas most sony ericsson's run on the symbian platform which means they are generally a lot more stable than the others.

the common fault i get that would cause a laptop to overheat would be the fan, a laptop runs hot anyway so once the fan blows the heat soon builds up.

this IS covered under your warranty no matter what they say, and no you don't need to bring your receipt with you to get it booked in, they can find it all on the system!

although this isn't a common fault, it doesn happen and would explain it.

hope this helps,

I just got a new computer which has windows vista on it. My internet server is Piper which is not compatible with the new windows programme. The guy at piper said it was a common compatibilty problem with alot of software and the new vista programme. Should I just change my internet provider ( and if so what to ? ) or what ? Seems a bit ridiculous that currys would sell me a computer that wasn't compatible with alot of software yet.

Hi Catherine,

I'm actually employed by DSGi (parent company of currys), the vast majority of ISP's are windows vista compatible, however a small minority of them sadly aren't. In which case i'd recomend using a DSL router to replace the modem they've given you, this should also eliminate the need to use the non-vista compatible software. I'm sure if you spoke to pipex they'll sort you something out; be it or DSL router or maybe just a newer version of the software.

Windows vista was available in the industry long before it was released to the public, therefore pipex would of had plenty of time to test their current release of software with the new OS.

The rep from pipex that you spoke to seemed to be aware of the above issue, i'm surpised that they didn't offer you a solution?

hope this helps,

My advice would have actually been not to ask a forum full of nerds what to do.(no offense guys)

Then again seeing as it was an anime expo that you met her at maybe a little geekyness is all you need.

An anime expo is basically just a group of anime fans getting together in a big building and finding out whats new in the world of anime with talks from directors and the voice actors in all your favorite anime. Basically a Sci Fi Con but with anime.

Disclaimer: Just incase there are any chicks reading this and thinking im a geek right now my first answer is yes i am :P however i have never been to either an anime expo or a Sci fi Con. Although this is mainly because australia is deprived of such things... :P

ahh thanks matey, in which case i feel quite proud that i had no idea what it was :P lol, geeks? how very dare you lol just because we know the difference between cat.5 & cat.6 doesn't make us geeks; well actually i guess it does lol

we can all argue about it, but everyone has without a doubt got more money now, policing is better, schools are slowly getting better, crime rates are finally going down - it seems though that iraq spoils this proven track record, but whom; put in the shoes of bush or blair shortly after 9/11 - could honestly say they wouldn't have done the same, truth is proberbly very, after all they're only human. but credit where credit is due, i was never really a bush fan but 9/11 definately made him, you guys had a coal shovel of sh** thrown at you and he pulled you through the over side, admittedly not daisy fresh - but still the other side (with lots of air fresheners lol).

with all due respect both to parties, i don't believe that the states need to lower the boundarys for imigration, even though we're ony a small island it's still a major issue for the u.k, let alone the u.s, not only does it blur any official figures as to exactly how many live in a certain area etc, it also put extra strain on the nearby school and hospitals. because they've entered illegally they've not been acounted for and therefore not budgeted for.

yes , although agree it's sad that legal and working imigrants who hold a 'green card' should be denyed the right to have their family with them, but with all the recent events - is it really wise to go softening laws, especially those that govern imigration?

you'll always get better value for money and like for like performance from a desktop but a laptop boasts mobility as well as lower power consumption levels. unless you're planning on getting something like an alienware laptops are generally bad for gamers or any high res applications, this is partly because the components in a notebook / laptop run a lot hotter than those in a desktop. it's a toughie, although i have both (and a pda phone thing lol) i rarely use the desktop if ever.
