Strange; you're using IE6 by the looks of it, have you tried reinstalling it or updating to a newer version?
If your work computer isn't locked down you may be able to go to control panel, add & remove programs, then repair?
Dazza
Hello and welcome to Daniweb!
Didn't really understand that, sounds like you've tried setting up WEP encryption on your laptop and your router.
To use WEP or any form of router based encryption you'll need not only to enter the key into the router but also into your laptop.
Without the key in your laptop; it'll either not connect, or connect with problems - usually not internet or it says connected but it really isn't.
Which make and model router do you have? And what OS are you using sorry?
Dazza
Think I've left out loads; but any questions please feel free to ask.
Dazza
Hi mate,
Firstly it depends what size you wish to print - as you'll need around 6MP for A4 boarderless (going too high will just cause 'pixel noise' and actually reduce the quality).
Optical zoom over digital - always. Digital zoom is just the microprocessor blowing the image up and will proberbly lose some of the detail. Optical is actually the lens magnifying it.
The cards? Sonys, Fuji, Olympus tend to use different cards which can be more expensive. Panasonic, Canon (Same company), Samsung, Kodak etc tend to use SD.
SD & SDHC; SDHC is a new format designed for bigger cards as normal SD will hold up to 2gb. A SDHC camera can use both, but a SD camera can only use SD cards. Beward as they look the same and are the same size.
Pictbridge; this allows you to connect straight to a printer without removing the card.
Facial tracking: This allows the camera to detect faces and focus on them. Also known as 'facial detection'.
USB 1.1 or USB 2.0; not all cameras are USB 2.0 and is it high speed or full speed?
ISO: this allows the camera to compensate for low levels of light; higher the better generally.
My own camera is a Canon Ixus 7.2 MP SDHC with a 4GB card - fantastic!
Dazza
I was out in that! lol
Nice one mate, glad it worked!
Dazza
Sorry - reputation, when someone likes what you've posted, finds it useful or solves their problem they can add to your reputation.
Dazza
You don't need to be able to afford 'good stuff' there's copius amounts of fantastic freebies out there!
Avast!, AVG etc are all good free anti-viruses.
System Mechanic does a free trial this will get your system running smoothly then you can simply uninstall it lol
Any problems you get just ask; as someone here is bound to have seen or solved it before.
Dazza
Sometimes if you get a beep (this will quite often come from inside not speakers) will indicate a memory problem - had this recently with a customers machine.
Dazza
No worries, just thinking because I fixed one recently with a similar problem.
My own Acer had a problem not so long ago where the screen was going a funny colour - this was down to a loose connection on the RAM.
But the fact you say it seems to work fine when you touch the screen makes me think it's a loose connection the display as the RAM is in the base of the unit.
If you don't feel happy about ripping the insides out yourself and potentially making it sacrofical then a small computer store or PC World should be able to help you.
Hope this helps,

Welcome to Daniweb!
Fair play for the Hayabusa - fasted road bike in the UK I believe?
Kind of lost with me with the love for HP calculators though lol

Thanks John
Good Evening and welcome to Daniweb!
Is there a beeping noise?
And have you changed any hardware recently?
Do you have a way of testing the monitor and the base seperately?
Dazza
Good Evening,
Firstly welcome to Daniweb!
Have you dropped the item at all?
As these use a very fine tape-like wire to join the LCD to the base, if this has become or worked itself loose it will give the symptoms you're describing.
If the item is still under a warranty I would recommend getting it booked in, otherwise I would get the cable checked.
Hope this helps,
Dazza
No worries mate, welcome to Daniweb!

Good Afternoon Seelie!
Welcome to Daniweb!

Oh, and for future reference - support questions shouldn't really be posted in here, if you look at the top there are tabs for different topics. If you post in there in future you've got more chance of the right people reading it and helping you.

Hello Clara,
Firstly welcome to Daniweb!
I'm assuming this is your own router? If they have been blocked by the Netgear firewall you'll need to access your routers configuration page.
Most routers use 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1
If neither of these work could you post the model of your router please? And I'll look it up for you.
It's a simple case of just opening the config page then ajusting the Netgear firewall - all pretty straight forward.
Hope this helps,
Dazza
Could just be a high level of fragmentation, i.e your drive is heavily fragmented, System Mechanic will usually resolve this for you.
Are you using SM6 or SM7? Depending on the size of your drive it may take several hours to run. Personally I've found it better to run windows defrag fully then SM, as the SM defrag doesn't seem thorough enough and a bit to quick for my liking. SM as a whole is still a very powerful tool though.
Hope this helps,
Dazza
(not sure where I found this - but cracks me up every time, kudos to whoever wrote it originaly though)

A Week in the Life Of a System Administrator
MONDAY
8:05am
User called to say they forgot password. Told them to use password retrieval utility called FDISK. Blissfully ignorant, they thank me and hang up. God, we let the people vote and drive, too?
8:12am
Accounting called to say they couldn't access expense reports database.Gave them Standard Sys Admin Answer #112, "Well, it works for me." Let them rant and rave while I unplugged my coffeemaker from the UPS and plugged their server back in. Suggested they try it again. One more happy customer...
8:14 am
User from 8:05 call said they received error message "Error accessing Drive 0." Told them it was an OS problem. Transferred them to microsupport.
11:00 am
Relatively quiet for last few hours. Decide to plug support phone back in so I can call my girlfriend. Says parents are coming into town this weekend. Put her on hold and transferred her to janitorial closet down in basement. What is she thinking? The "Myst" and "Doom" nationals are this weekend!
11:34 am
Another user calls (do they ever learn?). Says they want ACL changed on HR performance review database so that nobody but HR can access database. Tell them no problem. Hang up. Change ACL. Add @MailSend …
you get a funky new binary clock!
I put in my Lan disk
Well the iTouch is more exspensive as it's flash based where as the vast majority of Archos's product range is built around a HDD.
With Apple bringing out a 32GB touch you can fit a lot more on them now, but because it's solid state flash storage be ready to pay through your nose for it though - around £330 in most places.
One thing to take note of though, the Archos 605 wifi (both 40GB and 80GB) require a 'plug-in' only available from Archos to enable web browsing over a wlan connection which will set you back around £30.
The iTouch however doesn't have this problem, providing you have the latest version of iTunes, some choons to fill it, then you've got 8 - 16 or 32Gb of fun!
Hope this helps people,
Dazza
I believe OSC is a program called open sound control.
Hope this helps,
Dazza
haha
Precision screwdrivers - just the right size for laptops, but not to small for desktops either!
Dazza
Stupid question, but have you tried this clip on a different pc? As it looks like it was filmed from CCTV which if it's tapes can mean poor quality when transfered to a pc or a high level of compression.
How big are the files that you're trying to play?
What software are you using to open them? Have you tried using different software?
Dazza
I believe Zdnet ran a trial between several voip providers recently, testing for charges, quality, service etc. Proberbly on their site still.
There was a problem for a long time (especially in the UK anyway) with users not being able to make 999 calls from a voip phone, providers claimed that the service was to be used in addition to a fixed or mobile line so it didn't need to support emergency calls.
However OFCOM recently ruled that voip has to support 999 calls, this could be the large number of businesses moving to voip or the fact that voip is now a household name.
Dazza
Hello!
Looking at the posts you guys will proberbly know this lol
I recently wanted to do a clean re-install of vista on my laptop, but it's an upgrade version and won't allow it. My quick solution to that was to carry on as an upgrade making sure I have enough space, after making sure I had backed up any work I removed Windows.old - cleared about 20GB of rubbish off my system and works fine!
Second, the boot screen; Vista is renowned for having a boring boot screen but by opeing msconfig then boot - then 'no gui boot' it'll change to a more fancy looking screen!
One problem though; I have a few files that when I try to delete or open them I get a message saying I don't have authority to do that - but it's my own laptop, I'm the sole user & my account is set up as an administrator, tried turning uac off but still does it? lol
Afternoon Renea,
It would always be advised to use an updated antivirus program as this will usually remove it all for you.
Unless you already have one installed, Avast! or AVG are popular as they're free but make sure you keep them updated though. Would be wise to look into or check your firewall at the same time.
Regards,
Dazza
(Welcome to Daniweb by the way!)
you get a very accurately packed box of tic-tacs
I put in a tube tv - and monocrome at that lol
(Normally i'd remove that post but did rather enjoy the thought of sony screaming lol)
haha calm down buddy, you need to leave it a good few days to get a decent response, don't forget that most people spend the weekend with family so won't be online much. Also others may be stuck at the office.
Dazza
(Think my last post was a little delayed lol - supposed to be in reponse to Serunson's 'Betamax')
(And I know what Betaman was & is! haha )
You get Sony screaming ;)
I put in the atomic clock
Welcome to Daniweb dude!
Dazza
You get invited to Vegas poker game (Classy...)
I put in a Bluray recorder
I haven't used this particular one, although I have used similar software before. If it's going to be used for work you might want to check with your i.t department or at least get their blessings first.
Had a quick look at their website - they're advertising 'phonecrypt' for 800 euros which is a little steep unless it'll be serving an actual purpose rather than just something you fancy getting.
Have you spoken to your network / provider? To see how it will affect your agreement and usuage, because my guess would be that encrypted data from your handset is going to use more bandwidth and therefore may not be allowed by some providers.
Hope this helps,
Dazza
does anyone know how to get a 5.9 for the hard drive score
I believe it's measured on both speed and capacity mate.
Dazza
Are you using a third party firewall? If so - is Window$ Defender turned off? If you try a download client such as 'download accelerator' does it work or freeze up still?
Dazza
Actually been using BT, they provide you with a Voyager router (slightly more reliable than its relatives) which routes your broadband and up to two phone lines over your ADSL connection. Have a Belkin wireless router running from that and all seems to be working great so far! The dial tone is a little different but apart from that the call quality is great as well.
Dazza
Welcome to Daniweb Dude!
You get a cheese house - wtf?
I put in a door pass...
Hello,
When it's unable to open webpages are you still able to ping web addresses via command prompt?
And if you look in Device Manager (if you're using Window$) is there an icon or a question mark next to it as a question mark will usually mean a driver problem.
Lastly, if you can't access web pages at all - have you checked the router? As it will often give this sort of response if the router is set up with encryption and either your laptop doesn't have the key or the key is wrong.
Darren
Hello,
If the wireless camera had a built-in websever (which the majority of them do) you should be able to do it, depending on the camera and what software it comes with you may need some extra software on the NAS, although this would depend on what camera you went for.
Hope this helps,
Darren
Hello Cathy,
Sorry; are you trying to sort the internet settings on your router or on your laptop?
And you said that your laptop is unable to run some commands, is this due to it being locked down (a work laptop for example) or a just a general software problem?
Regards,
Darren
You get a crisp factory!
I put in binary clock
makes you laugh! it's the same everywhere though, we need to stop employing mind-less drones lol, i wonder if we could convince a uk centre to let daniweb take over for the day?? hmmmm
Dazza
agreed! lol, i work for DSGi (we own pc world) Had to ring our 'service desk' earlier, got put through to an indian call centre, and they are bad enough let alone the guys at pc world! i was in pc world few weeks back doing a stock transfer, thought i'd be cruel and ask this barely 17 year old lad what the difference was between cat.5 & cat.6 - and the reply? (even though he was loitering by the networking aisle) "i'll get manager" LMAO
Dazza
Happy Birthday! - i'm january though! whoop lol
Dazza
sorry, an alternitive would be D2D,
can acheive up to 300M outdoors but only at 11MB/s and not very good indoors.
as for comercial perpestive, 802.11 is at the heart of most office WLAN's. and the majority of MESH networks, MIMO would also be something to look at, it's a technology added to 802.11 (bit like a superchager).
Dazza
Is 802.11 an open or proprietary technology.
And also i'm doing a assignment on 802.11.If you know about following datails please let me know.thank you very much.*explain what the technology is.
*explain how it works
*explain who will benefit from its use and why? Look at this from the commercial perspective and the consumer perspective.
*what alternatives are there? How do they compare?
*are there government policy issues related to the use of this technology?
• is it an open or proprietary technology?
:)
thank you.
hi matey,
The technology is in fact a standard (a very old one), it allows data to be sent around networks or hotspots wirelessly using wireless-lan, it's used by laptops, desktops, SAN's, routers, print servers, printers, scanners, cameras and even some radios.
802.11 actually refers to the original standard, since then tey've released 802.11g & 802.11a as well as pre-n, 802.11g basically brought faster data speeds but suffered alot of interferrance, however 802.11a suffers very little.
they are usually used between 2.4 - 2.5 GHZ radio spectrum.
the one you refer to, 802.11 had a data rate of 2mb/s, 802.11a had 11mb/s, 802.11a had 54mb/s as well as 802.11g. 802.11n however has a data rate or around 248MB/s. the original legacy version was released in 1997.
the standard is owned by the WI-FI alliance but governed by the FCC.
hope this helps,
Dazza
