windows ME

noted the files play in Winamp while Windows Media Player reports corruption for every file (including streams). asked for the exact error and suggested a format problem. That collection of observations points away from damaged media and toward a broken WMP/DirectShow/codec chain or a damaged WMP install: Winamp often uses its own decoders or different filter handling, so it can play files WMP can’t.

Quick diagnostics to narrow it down:

  • Attempt to open a known-good, native format (for example an uncompressed WAV) from WMP using File -> Open. If WMP fails on WAV, core WMP/DirectX is likely at fault.
  • Boot Windows ME to Safe Mode with networking and try WMP there; success in Safe Mode usually means a third-party codec or shell extension is interfering.
  • Temporarily disable any firewall/antivirus and retest streaming to rule out blocked ports or proxy issues.

Ordered fixes to try (from least to most invasive):

  1. Uninstall any third-party codec packs or recently added media filters (Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs), then reboot and test. Codec packs are a common cause of broken DirectShow graphs.
  2. Reinstall or upgrade Windows Media Player to a version compatible with Windows ME (use Microsoft’s download).
  3. Reinstall the DirectX runtime appropriate for Windows ME (this restores DirectShow/graphics/audio components).
  4. If available, use System Restore to roll back to a date when WMP worked, or run a WMP repair procedure if Microsoft supplies one for that WMP version.
  5. If none of the above helps, keep using Winamp or an alternative (VLC is a robust fallback) while considering a fresh OS install or upgrade—Windows ME is past end-of-life and fixes can be hard to maintain.

Precautions: back up important data and create a restore point before changing system or registry components. For further targeted troubleshooting, the exact WMP version and the precise error text are the most useful details when diagnosing this class of problem.
