Hi there,

I had several problems with my laptop and at somepoint I couldn't even get into windows.
I installed avast and started getting weird virus messages (I had AVG before). I run a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan that found 79! infected files. Deleted all of them.

I now can't update to SP3. It starts with preparing to download and then it says that it failed. I tried a solution I found here with turning off and on automatic updates. Also tried the long version of it. No luck!

Also, can't update avast now. I try running it manualy and I get an error message

"...avast.setup has encountered a problem and needs to shut down..."
Problem signature as follows:
AppName: avast.setup AppVer: 4.8.0.0 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0001302c

I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled avast. No luck

Any thoughts??

Thanks!

you see that files what you deleted? I don't know but I think you miss some system files. what was corrupted by virus. One thing if you have no problem then you can try to install new windows and then try again.

Below is the log. The files can be restored but aren't they infected? Won't it cause more problems?

You are correct, an infected file will cause problems but so will deleting necessary files.

Try the following:--

Verify Window’s Files

1. Go “START”, “RUN” type “CMD” Press “OK” or Boot PC into “safe mode with command prompt”
2. Type sfc /scannow /f (note:- space after sfc)
3. Windows file protection will check your files. Follow any prompts; you may be required to use your XP CD.
4. Re-boot your PC

Do a windows repair or reinstall

To Repair Windows XP from your XP CD…..

1. Re-start PC with XP CD in drive (Have your serial number handy)
2. As your PC starts press “F12” for boot menu (Or what your PC may ask for)
3. Scroll to and select “boot from CD.”
4. At prompt “Press any key to boot from CD” Press “Any key”
5. In the Windows XP Setup window, Press “Enter” to set up windows XP, (Don’t worry, this is a repair only, not a fresh install.)
6. At next window, Press “F8” to accept license agreement
7. Wait until windows displays your current version of XP and asks “To repair the selected windows XP installation press R”
8. Press “R”
9. Enter serial number when prompted.
10. Wait for files to be copied (PC will indicate 39 mins, it will take a lot less.)
11. When asked to adjust Regional language options, click “Next” as it is still set.
12. PC will re-boot.
13. If you have AVG Free, copy serial number to a file as you will lose it on repair. After repair a window will pop up asking how you want to treat AVG, Click repair and when prompted enter serial number.
14. Check to see if problem still exists.

If still no good:-

Post a detailed report

Go to:- www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html download and run Hijack this. “Do not try to do any repairs yourself.” Save the report and send it with your next post along with any error logs.
To check error logs, go to “START” “RUN” type “eventvwr.msc” Click “OK” and check if there any errors in the logs. Include any information that could help:-
1. What were you doing on the PC when the problem occurred?
2. Does it happen every time you do this?
3. What progs are running as well?
4. What have you done to fix this problem?
5. How long has the problem been happening?
6. Have you installed/uninstalled or updated any progs recently?
7. Any other information that may help resolve your problem. Remember, no one here can see your PC; you are the only one that can tell someone else about the problem.

Thanks for the reply.

Ok, tried to repair windows and I’ve got a problem.
(BTW The language in my windows is Greek so, I’m doing my best to translate to “windows english” – Sorry, it confuses me too as I’m used to English)

1. Re-started PC with XP CD in drive
2. Pressed “F12” for boot menu
3. Scroll to and select “boot from CD.”
4. At prompt “Press any key to boot from CD” Pressed “Any key”
This is where is starts to be different from what you described
5. Windows copies some files and then presents me with 2 options Setup, Repair, Exit (do nothing). I press “R” to repair
6. Windows asks which version of Windows install I want to “connect” with. (Enter to Abort) I only have one option so I press 1.
7. Next I am asked for an administrator password. I have no idea what this is as I never set a supervisor (for bios) password or anything like that. I leave blank and press Enter.
8. Faced with C:\WINDOWS>
9. ?????????!!

8. Faced with C:\WINDOWS>
this is where i would type in chkdsk /p/f ,and hit enter
there is a space between chkdsk and the /

Disk checked. No issues. Still can't update though!

You have pressed "R" too early and have gone into the repair console. If you allow the PC to precede to the next time it asks you if you want to repair, it should do a full repair then. Read item (7) in my post above.

Thanks, I realised only last night. Now, I have done the repair/reinstall.

The antivirus has updated correctly, automatically straight after reboot but tried to do it manually and it won’t update again. Microsoft SP3 won’t update either.

This, I think, is important! Whilst I was doing the reinstall, I was getting the message for several files (I have written most of the names down) that they cannot be found in the CD. I have my original Windows XP with SP2. I tried looking for the file myself. The file is there!!! I had no choice but to abort the copying of the file to carry on with the repair. But we are talking for about 50 files!

I have manually copied folder I368 from CD to PC (all the files aborted where in that folder).
Still no luck.

The problem from the beginning.

The system was being slow in general so I knew something was wrong.

I had AVG anti-virus. I found AVG to be a pain because I had to update it manually all the time. I download and install Avast antivirus.

I scan with Avast finds some viruses and I delete.
I keep getting messages from Avast (whilst on-line) that there is a virus/worm/Trojan in my system. Delete every time.
This happens every ten minutes or so, with the same files being detected.
The next day (17/09/08), I turn on the computer, booted, and then selected my user name to log in to my account. It hanged. Turned off/on again several times and it would hang on the same point.
I managed to get in using the “last known configuration that worked” option.
I completely delete AVG antivirus.
I run a Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware scan. 79 files infected. I deleted all.
Reboot the computer.
Avast cannot update. I get the error message:
"...avast.setup has encountered a problem and needs to shut down..."
Problem signature as follows:
AppName: avast.setup AppVer: 4.8.0.0 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0001302c

Verified Window’s Files – No problem.
Repaired/reinstalled windows XP. – The antivirus has updated correctly, automatically straight after reboot but tried to do it manually and it won’t update again. Microsoft SP3 won’t update either.

I copied I386 (where all the aborted files where) manually to my PC – No luck
