I'm having two problems that may or may not be related. I have winXP and IE6 with all the latest updates. When I try to click a link that is a redirect such as in this example:

http://www.techbargains.com/jump.cfm?id=327&arg=79493

I get the "page can not be displayed" message.

Even if I cut and paste this into the address bar, it does not link.

I did have spybot and adaware running, but disabled and even uninstalled both. I reset all the IE settings to default. I deleted all cookies and Temp Internet folder stuff. I ran hijackthis but didn't see anything that stood out.

The other problem is (not that many would think this is a bad thing but maybe it is related...) ad frames on many web pages also display only the "page can not be displayed" message.

Is this something left over from spybot or adaware?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

If you had Spybot installed and installed it's hosts file protection, you'll find a lot of ad sites get blocked (like ad5.doubleclick.net)

To check this, have a look at your hosts file, located in:

Windows2000: C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
WindowsXP: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Also note that Spybot marks the file as READ-ONLY, so if you decide to remove the extra ad-blocking sites, you'll ahve to remove the RO attribute from the file before you can save any changes you make to it.
