Hi there,

Could anyone tell me what is 28c0d.msi file for? It is lying in c:\windows\installer folder taking up space of around 340 MB. Is it safe to delete it ?

Can anyone give me more info about windows install cleap up utitlity? is it safe ?

I've never heard of it, and none of my co-workers have either, I know it's not a windows component, and we are under the consensus that it isn't a friendly program, as most virus and other nasties have funky names like that (made to confuse the average end user)

Windows installer packages (TiJay: see your own C:\WINDOWS\INSTALLER folder) do not have friendly names. They are not viruses. But, if you delete those files, the Windows installer service will freak out and start asking you for CDs for the products belonging to those MSI packages. Don't touch them unless you wish to be uninstalling and installing your previously working programs and suffer from headaches. The 340 MB file in question is there so that you can perform repairs, and add and subtract components, from the program using Add/Remove programs without having to insert the CD.

If you right-click the file, click Properties, and go to the Summary tab, you can see what program this package belongs to. But do not delete it.

Thanks, I found out that it an installer for IBM rescue and recovery with rapid restore.

I think I will keep it there itself. Since I have an IBM machine.

Windows installer packages (TiJay: see your own C:\WINDOWS\INSTALLER folder) do not have friendly names.

Good to know. I wonder why the files aren't listed on any libraries i know of for files.

I know this is an old thread, but I haven't been back to Daniweb in a while and I just noticed this reply. They're not listed anywhere on the internet because they're dynamically generated filenames of hexadecimal digits.

what is 28c0d.msi ?
