I don't believe they do prohibit this, although I'm not so sure how well it will do. Be careful you don't end up coming off as a spammer to prospective customers.

Hi! Glad you have found DaniWeb helpful. Welcome! :)

No one is denying her the option to stay on. We all think she should. It was her decision to step down and we're all here petitioning her not to leave us.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Makes sense to me. :) You really never know until you try. Besides, what works for one person might not for someone else. A lot of it is trial and error and doing A/B testing and finding what works best for you.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

She's baaaaaaaack :)

Parsing every single post that runs through the system is just way too resource intensive - and inefficient - for a forum community.

With the upgrade to vB 3.5, the default editor for new members has been set to the WYSIWYG editor (the standard and wysiwyg editor modes can be toggled via the icon in the upper right of the editor). When in the software and web development forums, the editor area displays a watermark reminding people to use code tags.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

That is what I have always thought. However, I recently received a complimentary Google AdWords optimization, and it included singular and plural of most keywords ... which is why I'm now confused.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Sorry for the late response. I would try either the Windows Software or the Hardware forum, depending upon the particular issue you're having. Be sure to provide as much information and as many details about the issue that you know. :) This will help us get to the bottom of your issue quicker.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Sounds good! Welcome :)

Hi! Welcome and enjoy :)

Hi, good luck :)

Hi! Welcome. Congratulations on your weight loss! :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

That's good to hear. From what I remember from last year, Spring and Summer were better than Winter for me. Unfortunately, we ran into some hiccups this April as two new servers brought with it some downtime. I think that contributed a lot to our traffic decrease. I definitely expect it to pick up in May :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I have FINALLY upgraded DaniWeb to 3.5. I can now positively confirm that this hack will work fine as a plugin by using the global_complete hook and an .htaccess file.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Plasma screens aren't really the best as computer monitors. Firstly, because of the burn-in issue. Secondly, because you can get a higher resolution if you go LCD. Plasmas are better for TVs, but LCDs are better for PCs, IMHO.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

How has April been for everyone traffic and revenue-wise? Pretty slow for me here but I assume it has something to do with spring break.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I think I got to the bottom of this issue :) It turns out, strangely enough, that MySQL has a tendency to leak connections when it is unable to resolve the hostname of who is connecting to it. I added an entry into the /etc/hosts files of both my web and db servers to map the hostname to IP address of the other one, and haven't had problems for almost one full day. So we'll see how it goes ......

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Apparently you weren't alone. :) Marking this thread as solved.

While DaniWeb is based on the vBulletin framework, there are many additions that I custom-coded myself, including our portal, the blogs, code snippet library, link directory, tutorials, and more.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Unfortunately, this is just a new "feature" of the latest version of vBulletin, the forum system DaniWeb is based off of. After having problem after problem with the wysiwyg editor, I have to admit I won't go near hacking it with a ten foot pole. I will see if anyone in the vB community has any suggestions. Personally, though, I sorta like it better this way because I thought the two forms was a little cumbersome. :) Will look into this but no promises.

I'm experimenting with a new advertisement spot to compensate for the two new servers we had to buy this month. It's a Google text link spot and it's displayed below the first post of a thread. Does anyone have a big concern with it being there or is it pretty good?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Huh??

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Well there ya go! :)

From a usability standpoint, is it alright for a dynamic website to require the use of browser cookies in order to be fully operable (ie is it still necessary in 2006)? Or do messy session URLs still have a necessary place in Internet land?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hi!! :) Welcome to DaniWeb ... I hope you enjoy this place and hope to see you around a lot.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

So now aren't you glad you didn't say "oh, wow, cheap visitors! let me buy a whole load of 'em!" :) You get what you pay for I guess.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

No matter what types of new advertising venues are introduced, people will eventually, over time, develop a blindness to them. 468x60 static gif banners worked amazing back in the day. Flash banners are starting to develop banner blindness now, which is why advertisers are turning towards Eyeblaster, expandables, and other forms of rich media.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Isn't this a paid program? Downloading it for free is illegal.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Currently, we have 3 million pages indexed in Google (down from 8 million, actually) and I have never even touched the Google sitemap. :) Does that answer your question? :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I highly doubt that this is a problem related to MySQL, specifically, so I am going to move your thread to the network configuration forum where I think you'll get better responses.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hi new fellas :) Welcome to our humble home on the web.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Is it necessary to add the plural form of keywords into an AdWords campaign? In other words, would I need to have keywords: widget, widgets, blue widget, blue widgets, red widget, red widgets, etc?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

When you posted this thread we were using 3.0.x. We're now using 3.5 :) Can you tell the difference?

vB 3.5 code is more streamlined, more object-oriented, has support for AJAX for various inline moderation tools, and has a nifty plugin system to make installing hacks very easy.

When is it appropriate to use KEEP ALIVE (persistent connections)? How come my Apache comes with this setting off?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

That's what the Google FAQ said :) Didn't get that out of a third party.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Well there ya go :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

There is no best number. For me, I get about a 5% conversion rate for search engine traffic and about a 3% conversion rate overall. But there is a difference between members and actie members. I would rather have 1 really active, dedicated member than 100 members who registered and never visited again.

Don't judge success on numbers. Is your community growing as much as you'd like it to? Has activity slowed down recently? Browse this forum for other member-boosting and community-building activities for your community.

** CAN A MYSQLD EXPERT PLEASE HELP ME OUT ON THIS ONE **
I am having a problem with my MySQLd on db2.daniweb.com going through periods of 1-2 minutes every couple of hours where it refuses connections from Apache on web.daniweb.com. The error being thrown back is:
mysql_pconnect(): Can't connect to MySQL server on '10.0.0.2'
As you can see, I'm using persistent connections since I understand that they are more efficient when the web and database servers are not on the same machine, to eliminate the constant handshake overhead.
The Aborted_clients variable seems to constantly and continuously increment throughout the day. I am wondering if this is a hacking attempt where someone is constantly trying to connect to the MySQL server with an incorrect username and password. The aborted_connects variable is synonymous with when I encounter downtime, and it represents the number of visitors to my php-driven website who are unable to connect to the MySQL server.

For all I know, it could be a bug in a beta version of IE7 :) As soon as IE7 is released, I'll install it and make sure DaniWeb works with it.

A relevant active forum with having your link in signature is a good place to get links in terms of traffic.

Not only that, but it also helps get your name out there with others in your field, which gives your site a good reputation as a valuable resource for your industry. That's why it's as important to post on other forums as on your own (if you have your own, that is) :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You're definitely on the right track with some good tips. I think where most people go wrong is that they try to design their site for the search engines and not for the humans. Instead of spending so much time thinking about how to get more backlinks, instead focus all that time and energy to improving the website for its readers, so that they will want to naturally link back to you.
