Well as already referenced, Panic has a good FTP client called Transmit which is now up to version 2.6,

http://www.panic.com/transmit/index.html

that would be well worth your time to download and try. Heck if you have a G5, whats $25 for a product you like? I spend well over $25 going to dinner w/ the wife. I'm sure you will like this app. Very gui friendly. And hey you can go up a directory with one the click of a mouse!

Are you running windows 98?
See if you can go to windows update and get the latest service pack or fixes.

QUOTE:Anyways, I agree, a hub would work fine in that enviornment. But a switch is more practical if you plan on either upgrading the network later, or eventually having net access, although you still would easily get away with a hub with no problems QUOTE:
I swear in another thread she said that some of the comps were 5-10 years old I doubt she is going to be updating 10 year old comps......

Slow down there fella, I never said that she was going to updating her "old PC's" I said her network, like adding additional NEW PC's or a NAS server. Anyway I think the point is proven. Either way she is fine (switch / hub) Everyone is right, no one is wrong.

It could be a IRQ conflict on your MB.
What OS do you have, and what are the specs of the PC?

*****WARNING*****
This post is not tech related.

I'm sorry, but I have to vent. My wife has had me watching this Wade Robson Project for the last 6-8 weeks or so. The show is about finding and making a great dancer, out of a TON of people. Well tonight was the final show, down to the last 4 contestants. Now granted, all of the dancers were far better dancers than I could/will ever be. By no means am I trying to take credit away from anyone. But of the 4 finalists . . . the worst dancer won. UNBELIEVABLE . . .no I'm not exaggerating . . . the worst one of the 4. I thought it would be between 2 great dancers, Michelle and Twitch. But as the story goes, the person who won, did so not because of dance talent (the premise of the show), but because of his cookie-cut looks. Its too bad people can't look and see true talent.

Well thanks for listening. I appreciate it.

Really well that should sum up about all 50 Billion IE users problems great post

That was a good one ben.

jjorgensen626 30 Junior Poster in Training

Close any open Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

There are 3 sub keys: Explorer, ShellBrowser, WebBrowser'

In each of these sub-keys is the entry for ITBarLayout

For IE Toolbars: The WebBrowser Sub-key directly affects IE.
For Windows Explorer Toolbars: The Explorer Sub-key directly affects Explorer.
The ShellBrowser sub-key may affect IE as well. Its effect on IE and Windows Explorer is unknown at this time, so if the first option doesn't work, delete the ITBarLayout value here as well.

Choose the relavent sub-key and right click where it says ITBarLayout and select Delete.

The deleted value will automatically be recreated for you.

You may want to right click on the main key (above) and select Export. This will allow you to backup the contents of the whole key, including subkeys.

Or try this utility, which does the same thing:
Toolbars missing in Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer

I'm in aggreement with Ben. Fishy, fishy. But maybe the person was somewhere else when they submitted this post, and wanted help through email. It could be a spamer, but they have bettery ways of getting emails. Could be a hacker, but they too have their ways, although the people replying are considering themselves "techies" therefore a greater "hack" to accomplish. Maybe I've had too much coffee this morning and need to stop typing . . .

For future reference:

"ok, safe mode goes through the same process however it does not even make it as far as the white winnt screen before shutting off,"

Thats because you won't see a winnt screen in safe mode during the boot process. Safe mode just installes the services neccessary to load windows. Have you installed any new hardware?

jjorgensen626 30 Junior Poster in Training

What version of NT?
Also, what happens whan you boot from safe mode. Does it stop during the dos load screen?

It could be the memory, try replacing, or if you have 2 sticks removing 1 of the sticks. Then try the other one. IF this dosent work, we'll move along.

I dont know technical you are, but ensure you are booting into safe mode.

remember....version of NT ?

jjorgensen626 30 Junior Poster in Training

See if you can boot to safe mode.

jjorgensen626 30 Junior Poster in Training

Yeah there are a few ways (naughty). Shoot me your email address and I'll ffd you the instructions.

jjorgensen626@hotmail.com

I hope i dont get booted for this

jjorgensen626 30 Junior Poster in Training

Wow!!!! BIG"B"Affleck, you lost me on the 3rd one, but hey, ya never know.

I have a few suggestions/questions.

Try booting into safe mode (f8 right after post)
if this works then it is could be either hardware or software related incompatibilities like BIG"B"Affleck said.
From there you may want to uninstall any recently installed hardware - software. This may be a blanket statement, but it's a start. Reboot and see what happens.

Also, what version of NT are you running. 4.0, 2000, XP?

There are a few other options, but I would like to start there. See ya in a few.

You would do well to go to windowsupdate.com and download all the current critical updates, so you dont keep getting the blaster or welch worm.

If you already have Norton Anti-Virus then keep it updated. If you only used the Norton fix, and don't want to purchase an antivirus program, AVG offers a free version of anti-virus software:

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

There are also a few programs (PCMark2002-$20, SiSoft Sandra-$39) that you could run to test your performance. Both of these programs have trial versions you can use. They may be a little too much in the way of information (especially Sandra) if you are fairly new to the computer world, but can serve your purpose.

Not to bash by any means, but that's just...odd. Mirror or Stripe? And it would be a hardware RAID if you're controlling things via the RAID BIOS on your motherboard.

To be honest, I've never heard of a split PATA/SATA RAID set, 0 or 1. 1 I could see, but not 0.

Makes perfect sense, just not the usual.

I'm sure she said RAID 0 on the last page.

Also the SiS 180 chipset supports pata/sata mix RAID 0,1,0+1. Dunno if this is what she has but....

Just a suggestion for cscgal, if you have the time:

You could get another sata-pata converter ($20) for the current primary HDD, and RAID 0 on sata. Then you could undo your:

"IDE1 is connected to a dvd+rw which is dasiy-chained to a cd-rw (I know, this is bad)"

of course you would have to reinstall the OS, but bigggg deal.

jjorgensen626 30 Junior Poster in Training

One Question. How do you do it? Amazing! I thought I was doing kinda good, but Dang, I have computer envy.

jjorgensen626 30 Junior Poster in Training

Or a simple repeater. No need for fiber for a single pc...unless there is room for growth in the future.

Only problem with this is that any interference will be broadcasted with a repeater, which can mean lost packets. With a switch you would be safer. Also, the type of switch you decide to purchase will be important. The quoted length is 100m but I've seen problems with Linksys and D-Link to name a few, that have problems after 100ft. You could also go Directional Wireless if it is a clear line of sight between the 2 locations. As far as cable goes, different shielding is usually for code regulations, and other names (Cat5, Cat5e) are for transfer speeds, but most cat5 should work.

jjorgensen626 30 Junior Poster in Training

I had to do a similar thing. I returned my CompUSA keyboard, and got the Official MAC version, for the same price. Also no drivers were needed for either the media keys or the USB ports.
