As bentkey asked, what OS are you using? If you know how to get to the Device Manager, check to see if there are any devices that are not working properly. If there are, try reinstalling the drivers.

If you are having any other problems, can you please list them all together? Multiple problems could have one central cause. But even if they don't, you get everything fixed quicker. :)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

read the hard drive directly or exaclty how does one get data off a drive that is not working?

I can't help much with your main question, but as for this part, assuming the drive is working and just won't boot, you could put it into a computer as a slave to retrieve the data (or put it in an external USB case).

Hey Jeff, welcome to DaniWeb!

First of all, there is a notice at the top of this forum requesting all hijackthis logs be posted in the security section, so this thread will probably be moved soon.

Next, did you try using System Restore to return your system to a point before you started having this problem? If you did, or do, and it doesn't work, try the fix at this link:
http://www.winnetmag.com/Article/ArticleID/38203/38203.html

If you still don't have any luck, update your hijackthis using either the Update feature within it or from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

Close all open windows before scanning and post the new log.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

What is an in-place upgrade for the .dlls? Also, the microsoft link for that did not work.[/url]

It's basically a repair for XP; the link apparently got changed, this one should work:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341

Someone should be along shortly to review your log.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Did you try booting into Safe Mode and deleting it from there?

Follow these tips about Helping Yourself from the Security forum:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

If you still have problems, post a hijackthis log in the Security forum. You can download hijackthis from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

While you're waiting for someone to review your log, try a free online antivirus scan here and see if it finds anything:
http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I have XP home edition and I tried to follow the links instructions for adding partitions and formatting them but it will not allow me to format or add partitions is there something I need to turn on or does xp home edition not allow this.
I have xp pro on another computer and I can do it on that computer.

bpsman, you should ask this question in the thread you already have going, not in someone else's.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Well, the link works for me now -- don't know what the problem was before. I'll take a look through it when I get a chance.

As I mentioned before, I don't know much about DOS, so hopefully someone else will be able to help you with that. I don't know why a sys command would change the directory, I believe you're correct about cd being the command for that.

I don't understand why using a win98 startup disk didn't work either, unless it's corrupted or incomplete like your DOS.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi Tim, first off, hhijackthis should be in run from it's own folder, not your desktop (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe). Next, you should update hijackthis using either the Update feature within it, or here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

To fix your .dll problems, I suspect you will need to do an in-place upgrade. Instructions for doing that can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...1&Product=winxp

After you update hijackthis and put it in it's own folder, post a new log.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi Smanette and welcome to DaniWeb! If you haven't done so already, you should review the Sticky thread at the top of this forum called Helping yourself:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

If you still have problems after that, use HiJackThis as instructed there.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hey Robin, since you haven't replied in a few day, maybe you've gotten your problem fixed. But in case you haven't, or someone else needs it, here are instructions for fixing winsock:

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

:o oops, just noticed Grinler was posting while I was typing!

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi blkcat and welcome to DaniWeb! I can't really help you with this, but you'd have much better luck if you were to post it in the Windows 95/98/98se/Me forum.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

There will be more to do, but this will get you started. First off, you're running HJT from your desktop; it should really be in it's own folder (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe).

Next, delete all temporay files found here: C:\documents and settings\tj\local settings\temp

It also wouldn't be a bad idea to do a Search of all files and folders using *.tmp If anything is found you wish to keep, move it to another folder and delete everything else.

Close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and have it fix these items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50171
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50171
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50171

You can also have it fix anything that says (file missing)

Reboot, scan again with all windows closed, save and post the new log.

If anyone has any additional information or solutions to SP2 problems please post them in this thread.

If you have any questions about SP2, or are having any trouble after upgrading to SP2, please start a new thread.

Thanks :)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

If it came preinstalled, it's almost certainly OEM. If you have an actual XP CD, at the top will be a statement saying "For distribution with a new PC only..." If it says that, then it's OEM, if it doesn't then it's not. If you don't have an XP CD, but instead have a 'Restore' CD, then it is OEM.

You can still try putting it into your new computer, but be prepared for it not to work because most likely, it won't.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Supreme Ox, have you asked any of these users if they have upgraded to SP2? If so, did they have the problem before that or did it start afterwards? It's possible this may have something to do with it.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Thanks crunchie! That site is a bit complicated (for me), but you were able to find what I wasn't. After looking at the list, I suspected it was from SpyWareBlaster, and this confirms it. I updated SpyWareBlaster, had it enable all protection and, low and behold, xxx.toolbar.com (the one I originally deleted) is back! From now on, I know that if any of my anti-pest-ware programs find anything in here, I should just ignore it.

You can mark this one as solved! Thanks again!
(I would add to your rep again, but I have to 'spread it around' first. If anyone else reads this, give crunchie some cudos for me!)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

As Deonna mentioned earlier, you should update hijackthis before you post a new log. You can use either the Update feature in hijackthis, or from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi Cheryl and welcome to DaniWeb!

I haven't heard of any pests that make the computer show the hard drive as being full when it isn't -- but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. If anyone here knows of any, let us know! What size is the drive and what are some of the programs she has on it? (To help determine if it really is full or not)

It seems odd that you both are showing the 5-1/4 drive, perhaps there is some pest causing this. Try the suggestions in your other post (http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread11018.html) from bentkey for this as well as the CD-ROM.

Make sure your mouse is connected firmly and/or try another mouse to see if that helps.

Most of the other problems you listed could be caused by insufficient hard drive space so that problem needs to be resolved first.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

If I understand this correctly, what you are referring to are called favicons. They are a feature of the sites you visit, not of your favorites list per se. When you clean your cache or clean your Internet Explorer Temporary folder, they are lost. As you revisit the corresonding sites, they should be restored. If you wish, they can be stored in a premanent folder (as you get them back). You can find the instructions for doing this here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_favorites.htm

Hope I understood and answered correctly.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

My opinion? I think a 3.4ghz is too expensive, anything in the 2ghz-3ghz range should be more than adequate. But if you've got the money and want the "best," go for it! (By the way, "fast" would be a more correct term here then "big.")

550w PSU is a 550 watt Power Supply Unit, which should be enough to power anything you need.

120mm is the fan size, which is good; typical fans are (or at least used to be) 80mm.

Not too sure about this one "10.2 dBA CPU Coller"; I don't recall the exact definition, but dBA is basically short for decibels, which is how loud (or noisy) it is. 10.2 dBA would be very quiet, but if this is in reference to a CPU cooler, airflow (CFM) would be more important to me then dBA.

XP will run on 128mb of RAM, but not very well; 256mb is adequate, but 384mb is better for acceptable performance (my opinion again).

This one is likely to be your biggest problem: "...i wanna take my hard drive out of my existing computer and put it in the new one, so i dont have to buy xp again..." If you have an OEM version of XP, you can't legally put it in another computer, and it probably won't work. If you have the retail version of XP, then you can do it, but when you go to activate, you will need to call Microsoft and explain …

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi Shirl and welcome to DaniWeb! If you have upgraded to SP2, that may be the problem as shown here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi Tami and welcome to DaniWeb! You obviously have spyware and/or adware on this computer. The first thing you should do is review this thread and do all the 'help yourself' stuff you can:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

If you still have problems after that, download HiJackThis from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

Put this in a permanent folder (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe), not a temp folder -- this allows it to save backups in case something goes wrong.

Scan with hijackthis, save the results, and post them in the Security forum along with details about the problems your still having.

Good luck!

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi Bob, first of all, there is an anouncement at the top of this forum requesting that all hijackthis logs be posted in the security forum. Someone will probably be moving it there shortly.

Next, you need to updat your version of hijackthis either using it's Update feature or from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

You should also download Ad-Aware from here (the free version is fine):
http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10045910.html

And run free antivirus scans from here:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
And here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm

After you run those, close all browser windows, scan with hijackthis, and post your new log.

You should review this thread as well:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I tried the link again and still no go. I tried typing it in and that didn't work. I even did a google search for 'xperts multiboot' which came up with several links, but none of those worked either. Maybe their site is having some trouble, or maybe I just can't access it for whatever reason.

I did find a link that I think may be helpful to you though:
http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue47/deblende.html
Seems this is just what you are trying to accomplish.

Since your doing this for the learning experience, I think you should still start with the dual-boot till you get that right, then move on to three, then four. It appears from that link that DOS should be installed first, but fdisk from the DOS installation disk should be used (not fdisk from Win98).

If you decide to use the instructions in the attachment to my first post, I'd appreciate any feedback; if there's anything that is mispelled, or isn't clear enough, I'd like to know as I'm trying to make it as clear and concise as possible.

Thanks and good luck!

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I don't have ie-spyad (though it appears a good thing to have), and there is not 4,000 entries there, I'd guess 100-200.

Is "...\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains" the place where this type of information would be stored? Or should I delete all the entries there?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Do you have your Folder Options set to show hidden files and folders?

In your HJT log, you can fix this entry:
R3 - URLSearchHook: FiltURL Class - {5038FED1-CEFE-11D2-9E74-00A0C945A948} - C:\PROGRA~1\netex\URLSEA~1.DLL (file missing)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Good luck Amber.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

... or try System Restore, set it to a date before you started having the problem.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Try the Table menu (at the top), click Show Gridlines. Maybe that will work.

btw, this would have been better in the Windows Software forum.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You may find something in this thread to help you understand, or maybe even correct, the problems you are having.
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread10031.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

First thing I'd like to ask you is if you're sure you want to put this all on a 4GB HDD? I installed Win98Se and Win2K on a 4.3GB along with some anti-virus software and that alone used about a third of my drive.

I can't help you much with the DOS part -- never did use it much and I don't know when it should be installed in a multi-boot configuration.

I'm not sure what you're doing wrong (are you sure the HDD is good?), but generally it is preferred to install Win98 first, and then Win2K, and Linux (or Unix) last.

I've attached detailed instructions for creating a dual-boot with Windows 98SE and Windows 2000 Pro, the only thing you would need to do for Unix, is create one more partition and install it on there.

By the way, I tried that link you included and it didn't work for me (page not found).

If you follow the instructions in the attachment and still have problems, post the details, including at what point the problem(s) occured and any error messages.

One more thing, if you have a 4 gig hard drive, you do have a disk in (that message is not referring to a floppy or CD, but rather any disk with an operating system).

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Is it possible this is where the stuff Spyware Blaster installed is kept?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

So how much reputation points would you need before you'll actually start affecting other people's points?

As soon as you have 11 you will start effecting others by one point. The more you have yourself, the more you effect others, but I have no idea what the scale is.

There must be some problem with Hotmail as several people have been posting problems with it the past couple of days. I know they are planning on increasing users account sizes soon, so maybe they are busy adding servers.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Get one of those room foggers that you have to set and leave the house for a few hours. When you come back, open up your computer and clean it as alc6379 suggested.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Download HiJackThis from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html
Put it in a permanent folder (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe). Close all browser windows, Scan, Save, and post the log in the Security forum along with details about your problem. A tech will then try to help you fix it.

To cut down on the spyware/adware related stuff you get, you should update your Internet Explorer to v.6, SP1 using Windows Update and install Spyware Blaster from here:

(hope the hurricane doesn't cause you too much trouble)

I'll answer in case someone else with the same question finds this thread. An OEM version of Windows XP (any flavor) can only be installed on one (the original) computer, ever. The full retail version can be installed on another computer, but only if it is removed from the original computer.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Is there a similar doodad for the Mac platform???

Not that I'm aware of, but you could try posting that question in the Mac forum or do a Google search.

Hijackthis needs to be in a permanent folder in order for it to save backups (in case something goes wrong), right now you're running it from a temp folder.

You can download Mozilla-Firefox free from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/

To continue using Internet Explorer more safely, make sure it is updated (using Windows Update) and install Spyware Blaster from here:
http://www.zerosrealm.com/index.php?page=downloads

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

To help prevent being reinfected, you should update your Internet Explorer to v.6, SP1 using Windows Update and install Spyware Blaster from here: http://www.zerosrealm.com/index.php?page=downloads

To clean out more temporary files, do a search on your computer for *.tmp

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I was just looking through the list more carefully and it's not all porn-related, there's a lot of typical spyware and adware stuff too. I don't see anything in the list that looks like it would be necessary.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Since you don't have the restore disks, before you reformat, make sure you have all the drivers you will need (especailly the motherboard drivers).

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I spent part of yesterday defragging and running all my AV and spyware programs. Everything was clean until I ran PestPatrol, which found a pest named CWS.GoogleMS.3 located in: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\xxxtoolbar.com. I Googled the xxxtoolbar to try to get some info on it, but all I could find were removal instructions, which I went through, but I didn't have any of the associated files. I set a reatore point and went ahead and deleted it. Here are my questions:

When I went into that Domains Registry, I was shocked by the long list of what appeared to be porn-related entries. I'd like to know
1.) Where could these have come from?
2.) Is there anything in that folder that should not be deleted?
3.) Is the folder itself necessary?

I tried to Google that Registry folder too, to find out it's purpose, but no luck with that either.
