Have you looked through the literature that came from your broadband provider to see what the system requirements are? I would think a PIII-500 should meet the requirements, but you should start there to make sure.

If your system does meet the minimum requirements, you should get in touch with your providers tech support as they may have already had to deal with this issue.

Do you mean this line? "Try this scan at Panda as well." If you click on the underlined word this, it will take you to Panda's site for a free online virus scan. Or you can click here instead:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

To help keep the bad stuff out, install SpywareBlaster (link in crunchie's signature). Keep it updated too! (For a little info on it, you can see this thread: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread11373.html)

Hey, is there a bronze medal to play for? Looks like Cosi and Coder have gold and silver wrapped up :)

Not necessarily, Dani said "...quaility posts..."

I'd hate to be the one reviewing all those posts to see which ones were "quality."

I put both IE and Firefox on my son's computer and he usually uses Firefox, but he says there are some sites he can't access with it so he still needs to use IE.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Open My Computer and right-click on the C:\ drive, click on Properties. In the window that pops up, select the General tab. There will be a couple of lines near the top that say:
Type

Most likely you have FAT32 (but may be FAT16). Check the D:\ drive also (when you can access it)

While waiting for a pro to review your log, can you post your hard drive size and how much free space you have available? This info may be helpful.

Thanks bentkey, since I'm connected to a router, I guess I'll just leave it set to Auto.

Oh, Hi, I got my internet access problem fixed.

How did you get it fixed? It may help someone else who runs across this thread. :)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Probably not a false alarm; have a look at this thread.
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html
In particular, look for CWShredder; you may also want to post a hijackthis log.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

AHJ, you should have posted this in your other thread (http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread11437.html) so anyone reviewing it would know what problem(s) you are having. Perhaps someone will combine the two.

Close all windows, scan with HJT and have it fix the following items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...rch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com

Reboot, close all windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log.

You can check the processes you have running against this list to see what you need and what you don't, but with that many, it might be better to reformat and start over.
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

You could also post a hijackthis log in the Security forum to help identify what is causing the problems.
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

A clean install (format) is usually preferred, but if you're not having any problems with your computer and have a lot of programs you don't want to reinstall, you don't need to, but you will need to use a 3rd party utility -- like PartitionMagic or Paragon Partition Manager -- in order to create another partition to put XP on.

Instructions for creating partitions are included in both the link in Catweazle's signature and the one I posted previously -- both of these, however, are based on a clean install. If you use a 3rd party utility, you would have to use their instructions.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Have you (or anyone else) actually used it?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I haven't done it in awhile, but with XP Home, you need to boot into Safe Mode, and then log on as Administrator to access other User Accounts. Other then that, I think it works about the same... Shouldn't be too hard to figure out once you're there anyway.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

First you should update hjt using either the update feature within it or from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html
(the updated version may find something new)

When you post the new log, can you also include some details about your system (CPU, hard drive size/space available, memory...)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Have to let one of the pros check your log, I don't really see anything bad there.

Have you tried cleaning your mouse (remove the ball and clean it and the rollers/guides)?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

This may help you with your processes:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

For your popup, have a look through this thread:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

If you still have problems, post an hjt log as explained in the thread. You can get the current version from here:

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi cs, welcome to DaniWeb! You must not have noticed the announcement at the top of the forum requesting all hijackthis logs be posted in the Security forum. :)

There are some things you should do, however, before posting your log there. First, have a look at this thread:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

I see you have already done several things to try to get rid of this, but there are a few more. You should also have free online scans done from http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm and
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

If the problem still hasn't been resolved, update hijackthis using either the Update feature within it or from here: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html
Also, hijackthis should be in it's own folder to save backups in a centralized location (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe)

Close all windows, scan with hjt, save the log and post it in the Security forum, again describing the problem you're still having and the steps you've already taken to try to fix it.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

If you can boot your computer normally, there is another way to boot into Safe Mode with Windows XP:
Boot the computer normally.
Close all open programs.
Click Start, and then click Run; the Run dialog box will appear.
Type msconfig in the box and then click OK.
The System Configuration Utility should appear.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab.
Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and click OK.
You will then see the prompt to restart the computer, click Restart.
The computer will then restart in Safe Mode.
When another box opens asking if you want to run in Safe Mode; click Yes.

Check this thread for suggestions on what to do:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

Also, use Windows Update to get all the critical updates. If you're still having trouble after 'helping yourself,' get HiJackThis from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownlo...nload-5034.html

Put it in a folder like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe (don't run if from a temporary folder or from the desktop). Close all windows, scan, save the log, and then post the log in the Security forum along with a description of any remaining problems.

You need to first install your motherboard drivers, then the drivers for any other devices you have installed. If you don't have a CD or FD with these drivers, then you may need to open your computer to get the manufacturer and model number off the motherboard and each card you have (ie video, audio, NIC, modem). You would then need to use a computer to go to the various manufactures' websites to get the latest drivers for each device.

It's possible HP could have drivers on their website for their computers, I've never had one so I've never checked. You will need the model number of your computer if they do.

Your monitor doesn't really matter, what you mainly need are drivers for your motherboard (and video card if not on-board video).

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

This certainly sounds like a drivers issue. Unless you replaced your video card, the drivers should have been on the Recovery CD. You could try Windows Update, there could be updated drivers for you system there. Other then that, you may need to open your computer to get the manufacturer and model number off the card, unless you have on-board video, in which case you would need to get the name and model of the motherboard. You would then go to that manufactures' website to get the latest drivers.

Sorry I don't have a 'simple' solution; perhaps someone else will have a better idea.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Omni, after following the suggestions in previous posts (other then reformatting -- that shouldn't be necessary), download HiJackThis from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html
Put it in a permanent folder (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe)
Close all windows, scan with hjt, post the log in the Security forum and describe the problems you're still having.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You could try running Defrag from Safe Mode.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

This was posted by Dani (cscgal):
If you are connected to a LAN and have problems with jerky graphics, this might be the solution:
Right-click "My Computer".
Select "Manage".
Click on "Device Manager".
Double-click on your NIC under "Network Adapters".
In the new window, select the "Advanced" tab.
Select "Connection Type" and manually set the value of your NIC. (Not "Auto Sense" which is default.).
You should reboot.

In this thread:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread4488.html

My problem with this is:
I don't have "Connection Type" as one of my options, I have:
Link Speed/Duplex Mode
Network Address
Receive Buffer Size

I'm thinking Link Speed/Duplex Mode could possibly be the same thing, the options for this are:
10 Full Mode
10 Half Mode
100 Full Mode
100 Half Mode
Auto Mode

Which of these would be the correct setting (assuming I'm correct in my assumptions, lol)?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I'm not sure what forum this would be best in... I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with Anfy flash? My son wants to get it but I can't find out enough about it to feel sure it is safe for my computer (spyware, adware, etc.).

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Things you should know about SpywareBlaster:

SpywareBlaster puts a list of known spyware in your Restricted Sites Zone.

SpywareBlaster blocks spyware from being installed on your computer.

SpywareBlaster is not an anti-virus type program -- it will not 'find' intrusions.

SpywareBlaster should be updated often.

SpywareBlaster needs to be installed on each users account.

To get SpywareBlaster (free), go here:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/

If anyone has any additional tips/information on SpywareBlaster, please post it in this thread. If you are having any problems with SpywareBlaster, please start a new thread.

If svikik had a kestroke logger, wouldn't it make sense to change all passwords? (I don't know, just asking.)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

To remove kazaa from your computer, go here:
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-331.html

After that, close all windows, scan with hjt and have it remove all entries that end in (file missing) or (no file). Reboot, close all windows, scan with hjt again and post a new log.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

The only tools I believe you need are these:

A decent antivirus program
At least two spyware detection and removal programs
A decent 'Uninstaller' which will monitor your installations and ensure that all traces of a program are removed when you uninstall.

Beyond that, regular use of the 'Defragmenter' and 'Disk Cleanup' system accessories will keep your system in good order.

I don't believe that any one 'Utility Suite' provides all of that. You are best to use stand-alone programs, in my view.

Can you recommend a decent 'Uninstaller'? Any good ones that are free?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

If you have any additional tips for dual/multi-booting, please post them in this thread. If you have any questions or problems with it, please post it in a new thread in one of the other forums. Thanks :)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

First of all, you shouldn't run hjt from your desktop, you should put in a folder like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe.

Next, clean out all temporary folders for all users. Also do a search for *.tmp and delete all those as well.

Reboot, close any open windows, scan with hjt, and post a new log.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread8254.html

I mean update the link within that Sticky thread so that when someone goes there they find something useful.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

One thing to try for the System32 opening is to click on Start, point to Programs, point to Startup and see if System 32 is there, if it is, delete it.

Before you fix anything with hjt, you should put it in its own folder -- like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe -- so it can save backups in case anything goes wrong (and so you can find the backups easily).

Someone else will have to help you with the majority of your log, but to clean it up a bit (after you put it in its own folder), close all windows, scan with hjt, and have it fix all items that say (file missing) as well as these:
O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://public.windupdates.com/get_f...0dd3f5553147fe9

Reboot and post a new log as I'm sure there is more.

CD writers are to slow. get a cheep flash drive by lexmark (128 for $15, 256 for $36 at Fry's). It works as fast as a floppy and as reliable as a CD+RW

With 40GB of data to transfer, that still wouldn't be a very efficient method. I'd go with the networking, but the PC Relocater would probably work too.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I also have noticed when I reboot, not everything loads (when I look at the task manager). I went into msconfig and notice it keeps defaulting to selective startup, rather than normal start up. I keep changing it back to normal, but it keeps defaulting to selective. Maybe that has something to do with the log not looking right. Is this a result of the virus?

Your log looks clean, I'm not sure how to fix your internet access problem. You could try installing SpywareBlaster, maybe it will block access to that site. You can download it from here:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/

Your startup problem certainly needs to be fixed, hopefully someone here can help you with that; I'm afraid I can't. :(

Here's another way to get into Safe Mode:
Close all open programs.
Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
Type msconfig and then click OK.
The System Configuration Utility appears, check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK.
You then see the prompt to restart the computer. Click Restart.
The computer will then restart in Safe Mode. Another box will open asking if you want to run in Safe Mode, click Yes.

I forgot a step here so I'm reposting it just in case someone else finds this and needs to use it. Here are all the steps:
Close all open programs.

Type msconfig and then click OK.

Click on the BOOT.INI tab.
Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK.

Right now you're running hijackthis from a temporary folder; it should be run from a permanent folder (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe) so it can save backups in case something goes wrong.

After you move it, close all windows, scan again, and have it fix these entries:
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - (no file)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - (no file)

There may be more, reboot, close all windows, scan again, and post a new log.

I've had the same problem a couple of months ago.. a couple of bangs against the computer solved it though. I'll try cleaning my computer as well.

If you're 'banging' your computer while it's running, you are probably damaging the platters in your hard drive!
