Hi Jamie, I´m going to try and make this as simple as possible. To get onto the internet you need to have an account with someone, whether it´s dialup, DSL or cable. Wireless doesn´t give you any special way to get on other than it´s without any cables. If you …

One reason the site is so popular is that you can do a web search on many problems and get a pointer to Daniweb. That leads me to think that most of the people who come here are just wanting their problem solved (which is a great service for the …

I want to put up a dual boot freeBSD partition on my Win2Kpro machine but have NTFS. Is there anything I can do to make the existing files shareable?

I´m using Win2000, so this advice may be different for other O/Ss. When you access the file folder properties, use the sharing tab and look for a button called permissions. I have ¨everyone¨ chosen but you can set it up for whichever user you want. Under each user you can …

Hi Studio, two things come to mind. And these are just suggestions to try. I´m basing these on the fact that you can see the computers near you icons. (caveat: I´m running Win2K and this may be slightly different on XP) First, you should be signed in as administrator, most …

Welcome, Ishwar. On the main page, in the upper left corner, you will find a pointer to tutorials. If you don´t find what you are looking for there, try posting a thread in the Geek´s Lounge. Good luck...

This is not such a big deal but lately when someone is accessing IE on one of the computers on our home net, double windows come up. IE is set for google as a home page and one of the iterations shows google. The other doesn´t show anything at all, …

Theoretically, you don´t need a wireless router. However, practically, it is something that I would recommend. You won´t have any problem once you put a router in the setup...

I have to say no, the location could cause some bias. Dani is right that rep, title and all the rest already cause some tension in some posters. Having location an option is the best idea. However, these polls never generate very many responses. It would be nice if there …

Nice project. First, tell me how far away you are and if you have line of sight to the transmitter. Since you are on the ground with the antenna, it´s going to make the link more problematical. Also, what kind of antenna does the transmitter have and how is it …

802.16 can´t catch 802.11, in my opinion. We´ll have another standard before that happens. 802.1x has too many problems in the standard, for example, the security built into it are obsolete and to really have a secure wireless network these days, you have to add-on too many features.

I don't know about making a web page per se, but if you use a linksys router, then check with Cisco. They have some software (Perfigo) that will allow you to do a check for id, authentication and billing that you might be able to use. It doesn't have to …
