It could be the monitor itself, or as DaveSW said, try checking the cable that connects your monitor to the VGA card, maybe one of the pins are mis-aligned. try DaveSW's solution and put on a different working monitor. Give us a feedback on what happens to your problem...

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

maybe you can try using it on a different computer. just to check if it's the printer that's causing the problem or not...

nothing to worry about being old... our folks would think the same way, that we don't know how to appreciate the things that they did in their time... and now, we're doing the same to the youngsters. I'm sure they'll be talking about their version of old stuff in the next ten years or so... something like "...back in my days, we played with a very slow P4 5Ghz with 128MB VGA card..."

I wonder what technology has produced by then...

IMHO, I don't think that much money is worth spending just to be able to play some st.p.d game (sorry for the word)... Well of course, if you are to use it for other purposes such as web design, server, or anything that might give you a return on the investment I'd give it a go... If I am to get a computer which is top of the line, I'm not getting it because I need to meet the requirements of some computer game... But then again, this is just me...

If you're installing XP, might as well boot from the CD and format the whole thing... there's an option that asks you to format the HDD giving you less work to be done...

I had a friend who swapped his 32MB video card for my 16MB one... not really sure why... the video card works fine and I'm using it now... maybe sometimes we get lucky and we have to make sure we make the most of it... :)

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

I've had most of my experience with ICS in Win 98 SE. There, it was an optional component that could be installed through Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup. I'd imagine you may be able to do the same in 2k-- Add/Remove programs -> Add/Remove windows components.

I've tried ICS in win98se and it's very much different from win2k. on win98se, u enable the ICS and then it installs something onto your PC and makes a setup disk for ICS clients whereas in win2k, ICS is installed with the system. you don't need to install anything else to make it work, or so it seems. all you have to do is click on the sharing tab/share this connection/ on the properties of the network connection that you use to connect to the internet.

Everything was working really fine until one day it stopped working... I'm getting really frustrated by this... I'm starting to consider internet routing softwares such as wingate...

any other suggestions?

Wait did you say a crossover cable why don't you use a Phoneline/Network Router? It will probably save you a big time headache.

yups, I'm only connecting 2 computers... I'll be getting 2 more computers some time this year, but til' then I'll settle for the crossover cable... I already have a switch ready so I can connect more computers when needed. And mind you, I'm using dial-up to connect to the internet, meaning I don't have a router to begin with... since the second computer is only used for checking mails and mostly chatting, I really don't need a lot of bandwidth... and I've gone cheap    !!!

Hello,

Do your logs offer any advice? Perhaps some service is no longer starting properly, or perhaps you installed some firewall product.

Christian

I haven't checked the logs yet, I will when i get home from work... I don't remember installing any firewall products.

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

ok, answers to your questions.. yes, they can ping each other.. I don't see any problem on the network... I am connected to the internet via modem dial-up. the computer that connects to the internet works fine... but the client for the ICS is not connecting to the internet at all... lastly, can you uninstall ICS on win2k??? Im not really sure if it can be done...

I have a desktop and a laptop, I use the desktop to connect to my ISP via dial-up. both computers are connected via a crossover cable since I only have to connect 2 PC's together. Both computers can see each other on the network, and both can share files and printers. Internet sharing used to work but then suddenly stopped, anybody has any ideas on why this happened?

and btw, both are running win2k...

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

It's most probably a problem with your phone line. Try and contact your telephone operator and ask them about modem connection speeds, but try and ask your Internet provider first if it's a problem on their side.

Please help me with this as I cant think what else to do but buy another hard disk.. I know I should have used partition magic but I thought I'd be clever.. that'll teach me!!!

We learn from trying out new things, this is a good example... once u do this right, you've learned something new.. then that's the point when you got a bit more clever/smarter... :)

I already asked this question when i was a few months registered here...
this thread i started last February might be worth reading. Most of the replies i got were very informative...

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

I still do it sometimes... when i have to format computers that using a bootdisk and installing from a cdrom. tedious job though... oh! btw, before you can use devicehigh in the config.sys or loadhigh in the autoexec.bat file you should have himem.sys loaded.

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

although it's pirated.

oalee 53 cyberkill(ed) Team Colleague

you dont need to download anything... windows comes with it...
for windows 9x... look for mscdex.exe if you are using nt or 2k-xp, look for mscdexnt.exe. should be in the windows system folder.

all you have to do is add the following line to autoexec.bat

LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001

and your all set... easy as cake... :-p

you still need the CD driver, it should be included in the config.sys file. I forgot how to do this, I used to do this all the time... but if you boot using a win98 bootdisk, there is an option to boot with CDrom support.

Fdisk is a good way to wipe the hard drive. Remove the existing partition, create a new one in its place, and then format. That's the procedure I personally always adopted when using Win 9x versions.

But whether its Fdisk or Format that is to be used to clean the system drive, either tool must be run either from a Windows boot diskette or from the Windows CD itself. Neither method will work if you try to run them from within Windows, or even from the 'Reboot into DOS mode' function of Windows 95 or 98

True to every word... but remember, he's using WinME, and winME doesn't have the option to boot into MS-DOS. well, not unless you do some tweaking... but I don't think that would be necessary... a win98 bootdisk should do the trick...

They really spend that much equipment for free mail huh? well, i don't use my yahoo mail anyway... I just need the yahoo ID for stuff like online games, IM, and other sorts of things that you can do on yahoo... maybe yahoo's starting to get worried that Google would catch up to them some day... I used to be a loyal yahoo.com searcher, but now, google's better. I just wish I had a gmail account... oh, and yes, I still prefer my hotmail account, been using it since '95. :D
