I don't understand why they have to develop/release/sell something new when the not so old ones still work... I mean, you have winXP, win98 and win2k... they're working fine as long as you don't screw them up yourselves, and they can be easily updated using service packs... I say don't fix it if it ain't broke... but then again, MS is in it for the money... :) just my 2c.
... a ressurected thread....
yet, an informative one...
I never really had that problem. I've used W2k with SP4 running Office97 and everything was running smoothly until that damn sasser virus destroyed my life :cheesy: then I was forced to upgrade to XP.
I think I remember encountering the same problem a while back. I installed windows xp, installed an antivirus and then while installing i was hooked up to the internet. I discovered that there was a virus infecting my computer even before I get to install and update the anti-virus and windows. What I did was download the anti-virus update, unhook my computer to the internet, install windows, install the antivirus, manually update the antivirus software using the downloaded updater then got back online to update my windows. didn't have any problem since then... but the darn thing took me up to three re-installs of windows XP.
I personally wouldn't advise you tinkering with the psu without the necessary know-how. I'd suggest you take it to a certified electronic technician and have it checked out. Electrocution is not a very pretty way of making a grand exit in life.. :cheesy:
lesson learned:
"All storage medias are supposed to be formatted before it can be put into any use."

(blows a whistle) prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrtttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!! I think it's high time we go back to the original topic of this thread, don't you?
does it show up in the device manager?
I believe this is a glitch in the winxp SP2, or so i've been told. I also experience the same thing using an optical and ball mouse. I've tried doing some reading about this and many people have been experiencing this very same problem.
I agree! you might've accidentally touched something inside your PC. most of the time it's the video card but just to be sure reseat other cables as well, and all those other stuff you have inside too.. oh! and don't forget the Memory modules too...
I agree with Catweazl, 10Gb of space for windows is enough but I'd suggest you upsize it a bit up to 20Gb. It's always better to separate all your data files from your system files, this way, it makes reformatting and re-installation of your OS safer and easier.
Does anybody know what services are safe to disable or set to manual? Also, what recommendations to use as far as turning off themes, using a screen saver, power setting options, i want to get the best optimization possible.
Thanks in advance
Go to 'control panel' .. double click on the 'System' icon and the System Properties window should appear. Go to the 'Advanced' tab and click on the 'Settings' button under 'Performance'. This should display options with regards to some services/displays/settings that can be adjusted to your liking. There are other ways to optimize your OS but this is one of the safest way of doing it.
What is the use of svchost?
Here is an excerpt from a website I found using google.
"Svchost.exe" (Generic Host Process for Win32 Services) is an integral part of Windows OS. It cannot be stopped or restarted manually. It manages 32-bit DLLs and other services. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services portion of the registry to construct a list of services that it needs to load. In normal conditions multiple instances of Svchost.exe run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that separate services can be run depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This allows for better control and debugging
The article can be found here.
i believe that formatting is the best solution in solving OS problems, it's not the only solution though. But I only take reformatting into consideratoin when everything else fails. just my 2c.
I don't think you can fix the problem without the office XP CDs. The same thing happened to me under Win2k, but fortunately, I have the CDs with me.
...The MB is P4, but I am running a Celeron 2.6.
It could be this, maybe the mobo only supports P4 processors.
I'm gonna give it a try.
Pigkisser, can you give a more detailed specs of your computer. Is it an old computer? is the USB port an expansion or is it built into the motherboard. Models and brands can be of great help too. Maybe we can help you look for the driver online.
It's most probably wear and tear. In my past experiences, spywares just screw up windows and not the hardware.
have you tried hooking up your computer to another monitor? it could be the monitor. Another possible cause could be the video card, I just discarded an old video card that does something similar to the problem you're having.
Try hooking it up to another monitor to see if it's your monitor that's having the problem. If it's still blue on a different monitor, try replacing the video card with a different video card.
does the computer perform it's POST and stops at bootup? or is the monitor just simply dead when you turn it on? I agree with alex, it'd be the video card. unplug all of your USB devices and start it up again so you'll know if it's the USB.
have you tried contacting sony? i'm sure they have a replacement...
it does sound like it's an lcd problem since you said it was working fine when connected to an external monitor.
try installing a separate NIC, if it works then it is probably the problem. you can always disable an onboard NIC
click, click, click, click... if you ever get it to work, salvage what you can and get rid of that HDD. It's gonna be next to useless after a while...
pm me your email address and i'll send you one.

thanks a plenty hostmoon, but i got an invite already from my bro. :) maybe we can find someone else who needs it.. :) i wouldn't wanna hog all of it.. :D
I could use an invite if there are still some available...
what are they trying to do? drive their users away?

KT is correct, the quicklaunch toolbar is no different from your icons on the desktop. It's more like a smaller version of the start menu.

Before making another arbitrary derogatory comment about a particular operating system, I highly suggest doing some research on the subject first to learn at least *some* facts about it so you at least sound like you have a clue about what you're talking about.
My, my... are'nt we a bit grumpy...
so, generally, Linux is a freeware branch of unix??? am i correct?
I was asking for clarification because I wanted myself corrected if ever i misunderstood the discussion... and yes, I did misunderstand... :!:
and me! (I'm starting to read on stuff and i cant seem to get any of it on my head)
good luck on your Master's Program dfifita. :)
I would suggest you use PartitionMagic or anything of the likes. It can resize/create/remove partitions without deleting your files.
I don't think you can make a windows boot disk while running linux. But then again, I might be wrong...
it would make things easier for both of us if you could provide more specific details. Brand/Model/Age... and other things you think is relevant.. :)
you are most welcome, give us a ringback on what you did and what happened. I don't just try to help those in need, I also want to learn more from others mistakes and accomplishments.. :)
Actually, it's supposed to be a site for beginners since what we really want to do is help those in need. I'd offer all the help I can give... :)
Try booting from a diskette. If you're hard drive is formatted in NTFS then download NTFS Reader DOS Boot Disk and back-up all your files. After that, you can reformat the hard drive and do a fresh install of your Windows XP Home. This might be cheaper than getting a new hard drive... :)

If I'm to have the similar problem, i'd rather cut the old wires from the busted fan ang put them on the new one... but yes, as catweazle have said, there are tons of replacements around. I'm sure you can even find used ones, it's just a matter of how and where to find it...
so, generally, Linux is a freeware branch of unix??? am i correct?
I once saw a virus that spells scvhost.exe, I almost didn't notice it except that the anti-virus im running alerted me about it.
multiple instances of svchost.exe running at the same time is perfectly normal, except if you are infected with the blaster worm that executes it and takes up 100% of your cpu. What you need to do is keep your windows up to date with all the fixes and patches.
Tank, do you mean by answering the phone is by using the phone dialer incorporated with windows? if yes, then I think I've probably tried that already before. what i did was make a very short wire with jacks that fit the mic-in of the sound card and the speaker-out of the modem. It worked for me before but i found no sense in doing it since it would still be more convenient if i used the telephone apparatus. But if that's what your trying to do, you can give it a try...
- connect your headset's microphone to the modem.
- your modem's speaker-out to the sound card's mic-in.
- your headset's speaker to the sound card's speaker-out.
just give us a feedback here if this works.. :)
