I'm guessing that your using a Linksys wireless gateway (which is actually just a wireless access point with DSL or cable modem functions) OR you have a modem which is connected to a linksys wireless router.

If you are and you're using DSL, there's a setting on the router's set-up page for "keep alive" which ensures that you're connection is continuous.

Steps:
1. Access the router's set-up page. It's http://192.168.1.1, leave the username blank and type "admin" on the password unless you've already changed it.

2. Under Internet connection type (or "WAN connection type" for older version), if PPPoE is selected, there's an oprtion for "keep alive". You need to select that and put "1492" on MTU.

3. If you're using a cable connection, the connection should automatic. You shouldn't have this problem unless the firmware on the linksys product is bad or just needs to be refreshed. You will need to download a firmware and upload it to your router.

Note: If you have DSL, have done step 2 and you still have this problem, do step 3 as well. Just make sure that you have your username and password handy since doing this step may erase your DSL settings.

This is a rather technical procedure but takes just about 5-10 mins to do if done with a tech.

They need to have the same workgroup name. if you go to start > run > type the IP address of the other computer "\\x.x.x.x" it should either say not accessible or you do not have access or it could present you a username and password. if you get a username and password, it needs to be the one used on the other computer. the best way to do it is create another account on each of the computers to allow access and set access permissions on a workgroup environment. if you can ping the other computer, then it's no longer a hardware issue. routers and switches will just aid in the communication logically and physically but not allow access to files and folders on other computers on the network. it's how the network properties in each computer in a workgroup is set-up that get the file and printer sharing going.

Solutions:
1. You have a static IP. You get signal but your IP address is set to manual. Make sure it's set to Automatic

2. You may have proxy settings on your browser. you need to it off.

3. Recently added computer/internet security software. Turn it off temporarily to isolate problem

4. You have wireless security running on your router and the routers on your neighborhood might too. You will need to match wireless security settings with the router's. In this case you are getting signal and your laptop will say connected but underneath it all, you don't have the correct IP.

Need help in all these steps? Call 1-877-787-8749 for support. If they are not able to solve your problem and a few others that you might have, then the call is free.

This is probably a modem issue and/or filters.

From the wall phone line port, connect a wire directly to the modem. Make sure no or other device is in between the modem and the wall phone port. goose can be right, there might be a phone filter in between, or maybe your using a splitter integrated on another device like a fax machine or another phone.

if you can't get online, call 1-877-787-8749 and they'll diagnose and try to solve your problem 1-time for free.

This happens with anyone of the following:

Checklist:
1. Most of the time this is a wireless security issue. When you view available wireless networks and see a pad lock on the network you want to connect to, then you need a network key that you can get on the wireless access point's set-up utility.

2. Wrong wireless network key will give you the same result.

3. DHCP is turned-off on the wireless access point. For security purposes, some configure their access points to disabled DHCP. This means that you're not getting an IP address even if you getting signal from the wireless AP/router.

4. DHCP is turned on, you know the network key and it's correct but you're still getting the same error - You need to look into access restrictions on the wireless AP called MAC filtering. This means that your computer MAC address (your ethernet adapter's physical address when you go into the MSDOS prompt and type "ipconfig/all") is not yet included in the wireless computer that can connect to the AP.

5. You're too far - Sometimes you're too far from the AP that the wireless signal is not good enough for the 2 devices to successfully communicate. How do you know? If you go nearer you get online, if you go farther, you get low signal and "limited or no connectivity" error message.

6. You or someone else set a static IP on the computer. You should always …

I'm guessing that you wired the 2 routers together connecting router 1 to router 2 using the Internet or WAN port. If this is how you did it, then those connected to router 1 won't be able to talk to those computers in router 2.

Having the same IP and subnet on 2 different routers cannot be done if you're using both as router and not the other as a switch. If you want then to talk to each other, you'll have to change the IP on router 2 and open file sharing ports on router 2. that's the harder way tho. You can also turn off DHCP on router 2 and connect router 1 to any one of the 4 or 5 regular ports.

If you already have the wireless bridges, then connect the wireless bridge (on router 2), to a regular port and not the internet port on router 2. You'll also have to turn-off DHCP on router 2.

Hope this helps. If you need clarification, call this number 1-877-787-8749 and tell the tech guy that you have a promo code called "supportcall". you'll get a free support call. these guys know exactly what i'm talking about. they won't stop until you're all set-up.

get a router so you can network the computer together and get to the internet at the same time. if you only need the network then don't connect anything to the WAN or Internet port on the router. you also get DHCP on the router, which mean your dont have to set static IP on the computers or wait for all of them to get a 169.x.x.x IP before they could all talk to each other.

Trust me, a router's what you need whether it's just networking that you need or internet access or both.

Is router 2 connected to the internet as well? If it is, then you can't do it with what you have.

What you're trying to do if in case router 2 is also online is called multi-homing. This normally used for fail-over solutions like when one connection is down, while the other isn't, you'd still be online. These require special ethernet adapters.

With what you have, you can opt to do the following (only if router 2 is not connected to the internet and is just being used for networking:

You need 2 IP addresses on your computer which can be done if you connect wirelessly to router 1, and use router 2 as a switch while sharing the internet connection on the wireless computer to your ethernet adapter. This way, your wireless adapter gets the IP address given by router 1, for example 192.168.1.2; and your ethernet gives out an IP address of 192.168.0.x to the computers /devices connected to router 2. You'll have to turn off DHCP on router 2.
By doing this, you'll have internet access wirelessly to router 2 and share files or what not to devices on router 2. The only caveat is that when you disconnect your computer from router 2, they lose the that your computer assigned them.

Just playing around with the idea. It's tough but possible. Ideal? definitely not but at least it answers your question with the rules you need to follow.

I've seen this many times before and I believe that your problem may very well a firewall related one.

You may be running Zone Alarm Pro or any other software firewall that's preventing internet access since it detects another computer accessing services on your main computer.

Turn-off the software firewall on your computer and see if the problem goes away. if it does then, there's a way to have it working even if turned on if you just do some permission changes on the software firewall itself(ZoneAlarm, Norton internet security etc.)

Hope this helps.

get a new firmware flashed on the modem. these have updates that are not always automatic. If you're computer works elsewhere then it's not the computer that you should be worried about. I'd consider getting Verizon to test the line from their end. Of course they might say that nothing is wrong. When they do, be sure to prepare a ping result. Wheneve you get online go to start > run > type "cmd" > on the DOS prompt type "ping www.google.com -t" this should do a continuous ping (which basically tests the internet connection). You'll get a reply, request timed out, and other errors or successes.

If you get a series of replies then you see request timed out in the middle or as the ping goes, then show Verizon and say hey "I'm getting request timed out with a continuous ping. My connection is being dropped by either your modem or your service." This should get their attention and take you seriously.

If he can get online elsewhere then there's no problem with the card.

There might be a problem with the signal from where you're at. He might be getting a better signal at his friend's house.

You dont want to waste your time taking the card back and maybe trying to get a new one in replacement if the problem is not with the card.

I'm assuming that this is a verizon wireless card that's stand-alone and can connect from anywhere like a cellphone to a cell site. If this is the case, try comparing the IP address and DNS addresses that you get when he's at his friend's house. Use the IP address and DNS settings from there and set it static on the PC TEMPORARILY when you try to access from home. I'm quite sure you'll get online. If you do, then this is a service provider problem. Let them know that you might be getting an invalid IP from where you located.

If the case is that you have a wireless connection through a DSL line at home, then the problem could be with the router that your using. If any other computer can get online in your house using your wireless router, then chances are, it's working properly. If no one else can, then it's the router you need to have your ISP / provider set-up again.

You mentioned that you're getting an invalid IP address. When at home you can …

This could either be a microsoft browser update problem that affected your internet connection.

Try downloading mozilla firefox. I'm almost 100% sure it's going to work. if it does, then we know it an IE version 7 update problem or maybe some Vista security update problem. Also if it does work, I'm sure there's another updates from Microsoft that would fix an update problem. see what i mean?

if you connect a router to your main router, then anything that can connect to your secondary router can get online as well. If I were the neighbor, i'd get into the 2nd router using wep since it's connected to the main router anyway.

You need to set-up WEP on the
2nd router if you're running a cable on either the any one of the regular ports on the main router to any one of regular ports or internet port on the 2nd router to prevent others from getting online using the 2nd one.

wireless connections losing signals can be caused by many computers accessing your wireless access point. it can also be caused by intefering products like 2.4ghz wireless phone. In your case, since the other computer and the router never moved, and that you just added a new wireless computer, i would guess that the sharing of internet connection with the other computer is affecting the signal.

I would suggest the following:
1. Relocate the wireless router and check signal. Remeber that a foot change in distance and direction where it's facing makes a lot difference, especially the height of where the wireless AP is placed. the higher up the wall the better

2. Secure your wireless computer. Neighbors maybe accessing the internet via your wireless network which would slow your network down and jeopardize your private files.

3. Make sure that your NOT forcing either the router of the wireless computers a certain wireless transmission speed. For example, getting into the properties of an adapter or settings of a router to force it to work in 54mbps. It should ALWAYS be set to automatic.

you know, you can call supportrix at 1-877-787-8749 and get a FREE CALL if you use "supportcall" as a promo code. they can help diagnose and correct problems to improve your signal for both computers.

try to measure the ping time as well. anything over 800-1000ms ping time is bound to time out 50-75% of pings. if this is the case, then it might very well be a provider issue rather than a line issue. if they never had this issue before, then i'd look at the service provider causing the problem.

just to test it out, try using 4.2.2.2 as the DNS when you set a PC to static IP. if you can get a ping response from it then you can use it temporarily to test if the ISP's DNS servers are causing the problem.
