You probably shouldn't cuss.... a moderator will report you.

But like I said, a theory is a theory.
Something that a person made up in their mind!

Heh he's fine, I'm an old mod here and it's all cool.

Theory is a theory> Indeed, but they didn't just "make it up in their mind".

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

hahaha 'Stein, how can you go around telling people they are ignorant, when you have no idea what you are talking about. Look up theory on Wikipedia, here is what it says:

"In science, a theory is a mathematical description, a logical explanation, a verified hypothesis, or a proven model of the manner of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of predicting future occurrences or observations of the same kind, and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise falsified through empirical observation. It follows from this that for scientists "theory" and "fact" do not necessarily stand in opposition. For example, it is a fact that an apple dropped on earth has been observed to fall towards the center of the planet, and the theory which explains why the apple behaves so is the current theory of gravitation."

Most of what I said is completely logical, but you are a damned fool.

Assuming you read what I wrote, which part of your excerpt above goes against what I said in my post? And secondly, how does that make me "a damned fool"?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

First off, I want to say that I will not partake in this discussion, as it will only breed a flame war. However, I will point out some fallacies brought out on both sides.

(going in chronological order)

Evolution - humans evolved from lower life forms and turned into what they are today according to a theory made from a single man named Charles Darwin.

The Big Bang - the world was created by a cosmic explosion that pushed matter into all different directions and somehow created the universe.
...
Creationism, however, is obviously proved. Look at the world around you. Look at the mountains, the sky, the clouds, the sun, the life that was given to you. Why try to find answers? Why ask questions? When the answer is clear, it's right in front of your eyes. If you are looking for scientifically proven answers, it is hopeless. Evolution, the Big Bang, and even Creationism will never be proven by scientists.

Evolution- it was proposed by one man, but was based on the ideas of a vast number. It was never intended to challenge religion.

Big Bang- This is a theory that proposes how the universe came to what it is today, but it does not propose how everything came into being.

"Creationism, however, is obviously proved."

Ignorance. To build on your earlier argument, neither side can be proven.

First off, Darwin’s theory of evolution is just that- a theory. But …

I know what initially drew me was the look of everything. I thought DW looked a whole lot more professional then the other sites I had considered.

...but that's just me. ;)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I believed it until I read the FAQs :)

American football= what we call football in the States. Chicago Bears, etc.

European football (and every other english-speaking nation)= soccer

Rugby= what you said.

Is Rugby the type of "football" that the British/other Europeans play? Or is there another type of football that they play that I'm not already aware of?

As far as I know, the "football" they talk about is soccer.

>RwCC

I WISH I GOT ENGLISH FOOTBALL (soccer) ON TV!

Oh, and nice site, Joe. :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

That sounds like a great idea (even though I'm not a programmer). Drawing visitors to the site, regardless to a specific part, will be better off for the site.

Godspeed on this idea. :)

How about the letter Z (zee!)? haha...

Let's all agree on one thing...we're against Chavs.

Very nice Joe. :)

Someone tell me if I'm wrong but caffine is a short term stimulent. So in most energy drinks you would probably get a sugar rush, caffine rush, the the vitamins would kick in.

I dunno if I'd consider it a short term stimulant--it stays in your body for 6-8 hours, even though the effect wears off.

Oh, and for the record, vitamins don't help boost energy. Rather, they use energy to be broken down.

Well I think it's worth saying here that mods are not chosen for their chariasmatic abilities, but rather their abilty to devote time to answering and policing threads.

Dani: As you know, I'm a big fan of this site :)
But you asked for criticism:

1) In my opnion, too many threads go unanswerd (Gadgets & Gizmos forum comes to mind). I think what is needed are more dedicated true techies, those that answer all the help questions, whether theyre easy or extremtly difficult.

2) I second that about blogs. While I don't have one, I bet it's super annoying not having a notificiation when a comment is made on the blog.

3) If I think of something else, I'll be sure to mention it. :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

For me as power user, I find it an inconvenience that I have to go out and buy a 2-button mouse.

Waiit, if you plug a 2-button mouse into a mac, it works?

I might have to check into this...

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I"ve been rethinking it, and I still want to do it, it'll be a fun project. I think you're exagerating though. I have a friend in a woodworking class at school, it's his first year and his making his own guitar. he has the body all carved out and is looking pretty good. Keep in mined he works on it 90 min every other day, so I think it's pretty good.

I've actually done this, and it sure is fun. :)

Mind you, mine wasn't close to playable, but that wasn't the point.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Old school Tennessee (in South-eastern USA). :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Just to add on to what everybody else said (I also am an Apple user):

1) I agree with waht everyone else upstairs has said. I'm using a 15" Macbook Pro and it's been wonderful the entire time. It's never crashed. Also, I'm not too much of a gamer, but it is true, there arn't as many games for Mac, and overall, games will run better on a PC.

One of the downsides to Apple, IMO, is the lack of diverse software. I recall (back when I had a PC), I could usually find 15 different programs to do the same obscure job. At the same time, there might be only 1 or 2 for Apple to do the same thing. At the same time, though, the programs written for Apple are expertly done, usually.

One of strengths of Apples are that they are top notch for music, pictures, and videos. In other words, if it involves any media, Apple's youre choice.

At the same time, Microsoft is youre choice for most things work-related. I cant lie...if I'm writing a big paper or something that is work-related, I'll switch back and use my old PC for a bit.

Another plus about Macs is that they are virutally immune to virus/spyware/etc. Yes, there are many reasons...but let's not start that argument now. ;)

A well build PC will generally be more powerful then an Apple one. For me, at least, a big downside to Apple …

Hello Steel_man,

If it was me, I would probably put all inportant information on a seperate hard drive partition. This would then allow you to hide the partition with all inportant info, and still keep the C drive (the main drive with everything on it unhidden)

Secondly, I think it's worth mentioning to your superiors that someone, and you don't know who, has been messing with your computer and its settings, evidenced by etc.... This has 2 purposes: 1) their view on 'computer freedom' might change a bit, and 2) you might not be to blame if something negative randomly appears on youre computer (ie something that could get you in trouble inside the company)

Cheers,

'Stein

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Hmmm....it's looking warez-ish to me, but that's probably because of all the P2P references.

Regardless, I would say it's illegal.

Good find though. ;)

How do you like OS X and ilife?

It's been heaven so far.

Did you load X2 Programmr tools on it? Have you been using the terminal/unix? did you go for dual boot or parallel and XP?

Well, I'm not too much of a programmer, so I won't be loading any programming tools on this one. But yes, I will be dualbooting with XP, but I havn't set it up yet. I think Bootcamp will be in near future.

It Just Works!!! Welome to Enlightment Da Darkside Way...Happy New Year!

:)

@'Stein: If you don't have Parallels already, you may want to hold off buying it if you need virtulization software. VMWare Fusion has been released as a public beta, and once it becomes final, it will likely be just as good if not better as Parallels, given its sucess on the PC platform. Who knows? It might even be cheaper.

That's a good point. I actually have a copy of VPC '04 that I might try out (it was bought for a computer not used much).

Yeah, there's not that much Windows can run that Mac can't.

Amen!

Is it just me, or do I feel that Microsoft is the Dark Side, and us few Apple fans are the Rebellion...

:) I now know why people contiune to use Apples.

Thanks everybody for the advice.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

...If Apple is the Dark Side, then I'm now Darth Vader. :)

15" Macbook Pro and loving it.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

And @ 'Stein: I apologize about getting you confused with someone else. I'll do my best not to do that again.

Not a problem. :)

And the Cambrian Explosion does fly in the face of Darwinian evolution. If Darwin was correct, and everything does happen in moderate micro-steps,

From what I recall, Darwin didn't give a specific description of evolution (instead, simply saying that they change over time). However, there are at least 2 subtheories that I know of that debate how evolution occured: 1) where it occurs sporadically, in large spurts; and 2) the way you mentioned, in micro-steps.

Merry Christmas everyone--I'll be back after Christmas!

Hello,

Malware, just like any other program is hidden by 'packing' it using a special method. There are many different packing formats. However, it is quite easy now to come by unpackers, as long as you look in the right spots.

Thanks.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Do you smoke cigarettes? Have You quit? What do you think of smoking?

Nope, never have smoked. I have asthma, and even just being around smoke (aka bowling alleys) kills me.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Do we have any Mensa members here? I actually just found about it last weekend, and it seemed pretty interesting to me.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Very true. Also, Easter is one of the worst at this. Anybody know how the Easter Egg came into existance? Local pagan custom dating before Christianity. ;)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Have you considered that you both maybe right. meaning there is a creator who is using evolutionary forces to mold the universe ??

That's more or less my current belief, actually. :)

Or moreover, that God created everything, and let things evolve.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Hmm...well perhaps all the trackpads I've used before were just really lousy. I find them really unresponsive and annoying at times; leagues away from the control that a mouse gives.

The truth of the matter is that they just take time to get used to. I've now used a trackpad for something like 6 straight years, and can therefore use one just as well as a mouse.

Oh, and the other big thing that helps is turning up the sensitivity. This makes a big difference, IMO.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I would like to know if I would have to move all of my part inside of the computer to the new tower

Yes.

and I would like to know if I would be able to get a bigger tower then a mini tower which my computer is.

Yes, you're able to buy bigger cases.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I don't have to prove anything, 'Stein.

First off, don't get me and WaltP confused. ;) (I havn't responded to you yet).

You're the one with the new theory; the burden of proof rests on your shoulders.

WHY ARE WE PROVING ANYTHING?? Everyone here is not out to prove the other one wrong. REREAD what I said.

Darwinian evolution is evolution

That's just flat out wrong. The original word 'evolution' evolved long before Darwinian Evolution was thought out.

Darwinism is the foundation; therefore, it is what needs to be proven.

Darwinism is one viewpoint of the whole issue. Not everything Evolution-based has to arise from it.
__________________________________

although you'll claim it can be proven by evolution, even though it flies in the face of the basic theory: Go look up data on the Cambrian Explosion.

How does that fly in the face of Darwinism? All it shows to me is that live began at that point. It points to no means of achieving life.

Likewise, I would recommend taking a look at the Miller Experiment, originally hosted at University of Chicago. Although I am not saying this is proof of Evolution, it sets the stage for life on earth.

EnderX, I will say it again, we are not out to disprove your theory. Likewise, we ask that you follow in suit.

I guess the main question at hand is how old is this computer?
Is it running Windows XP?

Battery problem

I hate to say it, but this happens with every laptop. All batteries go bad.

Startup takes as long as 5 minutes; Shutdown hangs up...sometimes until I stomp on the power button in frustration.

Have you tried cleaning the drive? Also, have you tried defragmenting?

Lastly, have ya ever considered the possibility that you have a virus?
