Hi Tomi, welcome to DaniWeb.
Hi Cherry, welcome to DaniWeb.
Hi Marc, welcome to DaniWeb.
Hi Angie, welcome to DaniWeb.
Hi Sneha, welcome to DaniWeb!
Hi Mick, welcome to DaniWeb and thanks for the interesting intro.
I didn't know that this sort of work is so low valued
It isn't, at all, just the opposite. We rely upon members such as yourself reporting bad posts and spam to help us keep on top of the problem.
I am discussing this with Dani to see if anything can be done...
However. It should be noted that the drive behind the rep change has always been to get back to the rep bar being an instant and obvious gauge of the ability of the poster to answer support questions. Not perfect, by any means, but the best we can come up with.
Hi Nithyanandhan, welcome to DaniWeb.
Are you sure you taking rep from coffe house only and not some others too?
I think that where, for example, I gave you rep for reporting posts, flagging spam etc - which would have counted highly as coming from an admin - this has been removed as the Reported Posts forum is part of the Coffee House category. Even though the posts you have flagged are in technical forums, the reported posts forum where such postings are dealt with by the mod team is in Coffee House.
OK, so given that Microsoft has seen fit not to include Fax and Scan with Vista Home Premium (although Business and Ultimate users get it) what Vista friendly third party apps are you using to replace the missing fax functionality?
Assuming, of course, you do not have an all-in-one printer come fax machine to handle such things that is...
Hello, welcome to DaniWeb and good luck.
Isn't that the point of an immersive virtual world environment role playing game? Would be a bit rubbish if you didn't want to spend all your time there :)
Hi Sharon, you need to check out the Site Management section where there is loads of stuff which should be of interest.
Welcome to DaniWeb.
Hi Gary, welcome to DaniWeb.
In what way was WoW ruining you?
Hi Uma, welcome to DaniWeb.
Glad that DaniWeb is proving useful Dee, here's hoping you hang around and enjoy being part of our community of IT souls.
...and got curious answers :)
Yep, it is hard. But, like any member based website there is no big secret involved. It requires the following:
hard work
providing something people really want
giving it to them in a way they like
giving them a reason to keep coming back
more hard work
One shoebox, 3 elastic bands and a copy of Windows 95.
Dani works miracles under the circumstances!
As for the PMs, will someone please explain why a "friendly PM" works any better than giving a link to the code tags sticky? Maybe it's going to have a minimal impact, but it certainly isn't going to stop the steady flow of newbies that post untagged code.
Because it provides a personal touch, a connection with a real person, that a link does not.
Because it shows that we have noticed the poster, that they are not being ignored.
Because it shows that we are more than automatons, that we are a community and that we care.
For starters :)
It won't stop that steady flow, I agree. But then I don't think that anything will for all the reasons that Dani has so eloquently related already. But it does allow us to make a connection to the membership beyond just answering or ignoring a question. Isn't that what being a community is all about?
I agree 100% about not wanting to scare away newbies, hence the concept of sending a polite PM suggesting they look at the code tags as this will increase the chances of them getting help.
Of course, if AD and the other mods are happy with correcting the missing code tags - then it really isn't an issue at all :)
I've found that Opera consistantly does not follow XHTML/CSS standards
In what way? I have always thought that Opera was the most compliant of the 'mainstream' browsers, an opinion that has been backed up by everyone in the web development community I have spoken to - until now :)
If there are standards compliance problems with Opera I'd love to know about them as it would be a good thing to write about in the blogs...
Soz people, I was away on vacation with extremely limited Internet access (as in I was limited to checking my email via my smartphone once a day or I would get a good slapping from my wife) so was unable to do my usual checks throughout the day.
I do my best to keep the spam out of the blogs, and read all blog entries as soon as I can to achieve this. Sometimes things slip through when I am away or unable to connect as often as usual due to pressures of work etc.
Or better still, keep it in the forums and share your knowledge with other DaniWeb members and guests!
The carrot and stick approach would seem to be the only one with any chance of working under the circumstances.
Maybe a polite PM to the offending poster pointing them towards using code tags and informing them they are unlikely to get any help unless people can read their code easily.
Jim, sorry if I am being a bit thick here, but can you confirm that it is Cybersitter that you want to record the logs not AIM 6?
Your posting seems to suggest that if you toggle logging on in AIM 6 things work as expected, is that the case?
Welcome Jim. So sorry to hear about the health problems with your daughter, don't know how I would cope if one of mine were that poorly.
I have copied your message to the Windows forum here where hopefully someone will be able to help you out.
Welcome, your majesty.
If anyone can help you, crunchie can. He is an amazing asset to DaniWeb when it comes to helping folk with their computer nasties!
Welcome aboard, by the way.
Hello and welcome to DaniWeb.
Hey no need to apologise!
Hi James, welcome to DaniWeb. How are things in Oxford at the moment, did you escape the floods? We got submerged a few weeks back in South Yorkshire, but are thankfully dry now.
Welcome Gorden, looks like you have the right name given your predicament...
Hi Karina, welcome to DaniWeb. I have to say that a 'little bitch englisch' is one of my favorite unintentional slips of language for a while. :)
You might want to try 'little bit' in future as bitch means either a female dog, a spiteful woman or a complaint...
Hi Max, welcome to DaniWeb.
The Rash repbot reputation was reversed yesterday. :)
Doh! Can I blame the timezone difference? No, didn't think so :)
The Rash repbot reputation will be reversed as soon as Dani works out the best way of doing so.
I feel sorry for dani who is striving to keep this site (her lively-hood) professional. Didn't think about that before he had his fun.
Thank you for injecting something sensible into this. Quite so...
Or slightly closer to home, also reported right here in the DaniWeb blogs:
Welcome Mayank, glad we have been of help to you. Stick around, you might be able to return the favor for others...
Yes, it was a rep bot - is being discussed by the powers that be at the moment...
Hi Jaimin, welcome to DaniWeb.
Keep digging :)
You are a wise man, it is indeed, Welcome to DaniWeb.
Nearly into Hampshire solves the 'too far South' problem how, exactly? :)
My grown up late teen daughters both live in Worcester Park, which is Surrey (well, Greater London/Surrey, between Kingston and Sutton) funnily enough.
Give us a clue regarding the nature of your problem and we might be able to point you towards the correct forum to go ask for help in.
DaniWeb members are good, but we are not mind readers :)
