Hi Mitko, welcome to DaniWeb.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

As said representative of DaniWeb (does co-admin count as high up enough the tree) and a Middle England resident, I am not adverse to such a location.

A date that happened to be at the same time as something groovy happening at the Birmingham NEC might not be a bad idea, for example. I would have said Sheffield, but it's a bit damp still around these parts...

Hi Beth, from one media hack to another, welcome to DaniWeb. Glad you like what you've seen so far of our friendly little community here...

Thanks for losing the teddy bears :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Welcome to DaniWeb, but I'm a little perplexed as to the teddy bear thumbs. You are not planning on attaching such stuff to all your posts are you? Just in case, a word of friendly advice, please don't. :)

Let us not stray too far down the already well trodden path towards asking for help to break the law, otherwise I might just have to lock this thread for once and for all...

Hi Steve, welcome to DaniWeb. Be sure to check out the Geeks' Lounge as I suspect your global warming views could prove to be an interesting topic for debate there.

Try Googling for 'data security' +'data theft' then...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Hello and welcome aboard, friend.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

please help me out in my dessertion on data thert n suggest ne the good title for that.... im unable to get good ideas and material.....

If you are unable to get inspiration by doing a Google search for 'data theft' and investing some of your time in researching the interesting looking results then, to be honest, I am not convinced that you really want to pass anyway.

It is such a huge subject that finding ideas and material is as easy as finding a politician near a baby come election time.

I have been active in various online boards, forums and conferencing systems for 20 years. Just imagine the stuff that is out there I wish I had not posted. :)

But there you have it: everything you are, and were, is available to anyone who wants go look for it. It is the flipside of the connected world we live in.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Welcome to the DaniWeb community Dave, hope you enjoy your stay with us.

Hi Njagi, welcome to DaniWeb.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Dunno, mods are a rare and peculiar breed, hiding in the bushes and breaking cover only to feed. :)

Mind you, I am an admin and I seem to have made myself noticed.

That said, we do not delete postings or threads just because they are old. As has already been mentioned, we have taken the view here at DaniWeb that all postings contribute to the database of knowledge that is at the heart of our community. Therefore, not ever knowing when something we or you might consider worthless or dated is actually going to be of help to a fellow traveler in need of support, we leave them there to be searched and absorbed as required.

Only messages that violate the system rules get deleted...

It is another British one, and is a shortening of 'sodomize' so can be put alongside that other low quality swear over here of 'bugger off.'

Hello, good afternoon, and welcome as you come through the keyhole and ask, who lives in a place like this? The answer is, we all do, and we're all here to help. So welcome to DaniWeb once more my friend.

Although you have experienced how easy it is to be misunderstood and how easy it is for tempers to flare in the virtual world, which all adds up to a potential interesting and worthwhile chat for the book if you are up to it...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

An overdue welcome from me, here's hoping you spend more time helping us to help you to help us. Or something :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

well,it says

college /grad school
company
high school
n/a

im kinda neither but it says im too young to choose N/A ?

Fib. It isn't a hanging offence.

If you wanted to get in touch with other students at your old school/uni then it would be another thing, but if you just want to join a group and meet up there then say you work for the proliantfan corp.

One from around the Old Kent Road in SE London (cheapest square on the UK Monopoly board) where I was dragged up as a kid, and which has stuck with me, is gloverduck.

Derived from the cockney 'Gaw'd love a duck' as an expression of surprise.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

No irony at all, that is exactly why I am asking here :)

Talking of which, only one response so far. Do none of you guys and gals have any interesting experiences within virtual communities/places that you'd like to talk about and see written up in a book?

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Does 'blimey!' constitute a curse/swear word? If not what does it mean. I think I hear it amongst the british guys.

Only of the lightest possible variety.

As a South East London lad myself I grew up hearing it in full as 'Cor Blimey' which is actually derived from 'God Blind Me' as I understand it.

I am looking for suitable candidates to interview as case study material for a new book I am writing for the Science Museum here in London, to be published globally by Wiley early next year.

The book, Being Virtual: who you really are online, will be an exploration of identity in the digital age. The particular focus will be virtual identity, how we expose or disguise ourselves online in places like DaniWeb as well as immersive 3D virtual worlds such as Second Life and World of Warcraft, social spaces like MySpace and so on.

If you have an interesting story to tell about your life online, please PM me ASAP. I want to get all my interviews finished by the end of the month.

You will get a credit in the book if you do not want your real world identity to remain secret, if you do that is no problem. DaniWeb will also get a credit of course.

I want the book to be shaped by the very real adventures that people have had in the virtual world, and the real world consequences of the same.

For those who do not know me, as well as being an admin and staff writer here at DaniWeb I am also a freelance writer with 20+ books under my belt, a Contributing Editor of the biggest selling monthly IT magazine in the UK (PC Pro) and a former Technology Journalist of the Year and IT Security Journalist …

In the UK we say swearing rather than cursing, and bloody has been considered nothing but the mildest possible form of swearing since about 1920.

The Visit Australia ad thing was a case of the usual suspects, with too much time on their hands so they have to complain about something, kicking up a fuss and a couple of tabloid newspapers short of headlines joining in. The advert itself was not banned, continued to be broadcast, and was enjoyed by most people. I especially liked the young lady who delivered the 'where the bloody hell are you' line...

;)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

i hate that rule because i dont know if words which i dont personally find offensive count or not

The filter was brought into play to take the subjectivity out of it, in as far as beforehand it would be a matter of every moderator making a decision based upon their own concept of offensiveness rather than a system-wide one. So we ended up with some mods deleting use of the word damn for example, and others that would not flinch at the f-word depending upon context.

Dani and I spent many a night coming up with the list of banned words, and we consulted other forums and looked at their profanity filters during this process.

Now we do not claim to be moral guardians, and being a global community we appreciate that what may offend a person from one country or culture might not another. However, what we have ended up with is a system that filters out a set of words that will always be deemed as offensive here. It is exactly the same for everyone, and no personal moderator opinion need enter into the equation.

We felt that this was the fairest way to approach the issue.

Obviously we cannot provide a list of the words that are on the banned list, the filter would filter them out. Anyway, it really is, as the rules state, a matter of common sense most of the time. If you think it might cause offense then …

My right arm sleeve worms into my armpit, just to feather off the coloring, yes ;)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

The straight answer is set out in the rules, under keep it clean. Specifically:

"Mature language and concepts are therefore acceptable on DaniWeb to the point that would be acceptable on daytime family television, but offensive postings are not. To ensure that standards are maintained we have implemented a filter that will edit out inappropriate language in your postings. However, common sense should prevail and if you are unsure if a word is acceptable or not, please don’t post it. It is prohibited to use alternative characters in an attempt to circumvent the bad words filter."

I am not ticklish anywhere, although there is a bit around a scar on my abdomen which, like Dave S, can catch me out if I am not expecting it.

Isn't it a willpower thing, being ticklish? I refuse to be ticklish, so I am not. I refuse to feel the pain during a 5 hour tattoo inking session, so I do not (and my tattooist is amazed that I can have somewhere like an elbow or armpit inked without flinching at all, and she can tell when people are faking it to look hard as they always do a small flinch they cannot control.)

Hi Dan, worst job I ever had was as a manager of a golf club. Mainly because I hate the game. In mitigation, I was also manager of the snooker club attached to it and I used to play a lot of pool and snooker so it was cool to mix with the pros.

I think it must be a lazy thing, I would rather chase a ball around a big table than a big field. ;)
