I admit defeat, they are both the same aren't they and perhaps we only need the one - be that tongue sticking outing or eye winking.

I will be spending a week in August up on the coast between Aberdeen and Inverness in a small cottage to escape everything (except the midges) while I try and get the final editing for my latest book done and dusted.

S'OK, nobody is saying you started anything. All I am saying is that everyone needs to stop it, and stop it now.

As for the smilies situation, the reason it is in the list twice is that someone might want to use it for either poking their tongue out or winking, which are different things. The same graphical representation fulfills both though, if you see what I mean.

It is already happening, and both China and Eastern Europe are the beneficiaries according to some interesting chats I had with some outsourcing people on a visit to Bangalore. India, remains pretty much the top of the tree as far as western companies are concerned for IT outsourcing for the moment though.

Unlikely they would know. Most items at police auctions are not ex-police kit, but rather stolen/recovered and unclaimed property.

Still, worth a try I guess.

What is the difference between asking that in the appropriate forum where people who know the answer might be able to help, and posting it here in the introductions forum?

Answer: here you will just get me saying "hello and welcome to DaniWeb" whereas in the appropriate forum you might get the actual answer.

Check out the the forums and choose the one for the language your question relates to...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

anyway if you own the licence and the domain, you ultimatelty have the power to shut the site down.

But not, necessarily, the moral or indeed legal right to do so. It all rather depends upon the circumstances surrounding the creation of the forums in the first, any verbal or written agreements, understandings compunded by actions, and so on.

If this 'dispute' is more than just concern over someone else bigging himself up at your expense, and has an underlying business motive, then I would suggest contacting a lawyer who understands contracts, written or implied, and getting it sorted out sooner rather than later.

Not seen the fjilm yet, but my son got the PS3 'collector edition' game today. Not had a chance to play it with him yet, although he tells me the exclusive 'new goblin' playable character is a waste of time as you can only control it using the movement sensitive controller, which actually means you can't control it at all.

I am one of two people with the title of admin here at DaniWeb, that does not make me the owner, co-owner or anything but, well, an admin.

In your case ownership rather depends upon the agreement that you two had when you created the forums. Just becuase you registered the domain and bought the license does not make you the sole owner of the forums if the thing was something both of you talked about, designed, created and eventually ran. Just becuase you have fallen out, or at least I assume so, does not mean that can discount his involvement. Of course, if you created it all, set it up, it was your idea and then you invited him along to help run things as an admin, then things are obviously more clear cut on the ownership argument.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

If it is not your router, and the network is protected by WPA encryption, why are you asking us? Ask the network admin if you have a legit access requirement. It does sound awfully like you are wanting us to help you to access a network that you should not be accessing - and that would be against the rules of DaniWeb and earn you an infraction...

Welcome to DaniWeb, if you are a news freak then check out the blogs. Just last week my DaniWeb blog Inside Edge broke a big security story that made it to the lead story on TV news in the UK for example.

All the featured posts that you see on the main DaniWeb blog page are IT news related items...

Enjoy :)

This has now been rectified I am happy to report. I get a full credit in the Channel 4 News website report, where the piece is still the lead story, and a link back to my website in the body text (which in turn links to DaniWeb.)

I notice that word is starting to filter out onto other news sites now, so all being well it should help to spread the word about DaniWeb and elevate our status as a seriously serious IT community...

The link to the news video report seems to be broken, have reported it to Channel 4 News. In the meantime, this one seems to work OK:

http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/business_money//517157

The Channel 4 News website has the story up, and the video of the report here.

We get a link, as the 'blog which carried the story' but rather predictably the way it has been reported turns it into a Channel 4 exclusive - I am relegated to 'an Internet journalist specialising in security' and don't even get a name check on the site. Oh well, to be honest I don't mind as I just wanted the story to get out there and the security breach publicised.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

That breech is incredible. How did you find it? And what were you doing when you ran across it?

I get emails from people looking for help all the time, every now and then one such email is a real jaw dropper. That's what happened here, Sanjib, the Indian guy who discovered the security hole a year ago, emailed me to ask if I could do anything to help get the breach closed as it was still open a year after he reported it.

I had a quick chat with him, took some detail, and then proceeded to hack the Visa database myself to get the evidence required (and the screenshots which appeared on Channel 4 News) before contacting VFS Global, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the British High Commission in order to get the thing secured before publishing the story.

As soon as I was satisfied the breach was secure, and I tried hacking in again without success, I published the news here on DaniWeb and then got in touch with Channel 4 News. We worked together for a couple of days to produce the final report that appeared last night.

I love it when a plan comes together. The UK government has some serious answers to find, and it looks like they will have to find them in Parliament as I understand questions are to be raised there about how and why this was allowed to happen.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Thank you for the link to the news. And above every thing else, thank
you for your ethics and way you handed the problem. Good job.

Thanks. I strongly believe that journalists have a duty to the public in terms of security as well as reporting. As a member of the National Union of Journalists here in the UK I have signed up to a code of ethics which requires me to do the right thing as it were.

My right arm 'sleeve' is 90% finished, just a little more skin around the shoulder and under the bicep needs inking. Then I move to start the left sleeve, incorporating the tattoos I already have on that arm :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Well it has aired, was the lead story on both lunchtime and 7pm main bulletin, got 10 minutes on the latter. No mention of DaniWeb unfortunatley, but Channel 4 has promised when it goes on the website (tomorrow) there will be a link to us here. The video of the broadcast will go up on the Channel 4 website tomorrow as well.

So, any UK members see it? I wasn't fibbing about being an ugly brute, was I? :)
