By run do you mean it turned off and will not boot back up ,or do you mean its on but will not do anything or go online .
if you can get to that virus scan web site ,do and and let common sence take over ,you were sent there to do a virus scan so click on the links to do a free scan ,scan you computer now ,enjoy !:)

I know what your talking about with the message across the top of the page (under the address bar). I never get that. This is only happening on Windows 2000 SP4 PC's with the current hotfixes.

Just as i thought the browser is seeing the link as a popup and is blocking it ,either click the popup message that comes up along the uper part of the screen and click allow popups or hold down the CTRL key when you clik on the link ,.

Anybody else see this? I frequent a site that has a link to another HTTPS site on it. When I click on the HTTPS link, the pop up window doesn't appear. It just locks IE. Task manager shows two instances of IE Explorer running and if I close both I can relaunch IE and start browsing again. If I just manually type the HTTPS address in the address bar I can access it fine. This all started Wednesday morning after the 13 MS patches came out. I have done some light research around the web and haven't found any other posts related to this.

Windows 2000 SP4 and all current Hotfixes.

what windows OS are u using .if win XP go to add remove programs in the control panel ,and you will see in the left colum .set programs axcess and defaults .

This problem could occur because of Spyware , go on over to the Security section of this fourm and post you problem along with a hijackthis log .

Download 'Hijack This!'. HijackThis
Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\HJT\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

just spent a bit of time on this log in the other post , the files in the Kazaa shared foler are bad also i do believe,they defently shouldn't be running from the shared folder that fur sure .

Hi, I have Windows media player 10 and want to play DVDs on it. About a week ago I was able to play them without any problem at all, but now when I play them I hear no sound. I have tried many different DVDs and i have tried many things with the volume controls and do not have the volume turned down. I would appriceate it greatly if you could help or tell me how to get help.

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example

We have found that some of the CWS infections can be removed better from safe mode, rather than normal mode.

only thing i can add is when unistalling nortons make sure you uninstall norton live update and norton wmi updates as well ,its also a good idea to remove any reference of norton/symantic from the registry ,but only if you are familiar with registry editing .

I recently made it so I could see hidden files and folders. On ym desktop popped up a file called SHELLPAR. I looked through other folders and saw multiples of this same file. When opened with Notepad each gave a different name of a file stored on my computer (or previously deleted/moved).

Does anyone know what this is?

I keep getting a message "your current security settings prohibit active x from displaying this message correctly" My settings are set at medium and I ran Adaware and also HJT and saw no issues. I just noticed this today, is there something else I can do? Also the site it popped up on is a site I always visit and it never popped up before.

I get that here on this site ,but i don't worry about it because im pretty sure it just an add banner ,that i don't care if it runs ok or not anyway .

If they only save as bitmap files, look on the 'General' tab in Internet Options and use the 'Delete Files' button to clear out your temporary internet files. They'll save as normal after that, although you may need to close down and restart IE before they do.

just want ot add you can set IE to delete temp internet file when you close IE ,so that way they don't build up .may slow down browsing to regulary used sites but if you have high speed internet that wouldn't be a problem . anyway do this in tools internet optiona ,advanced ,scroll down to security .and check it off to delete temp internet files when !!

Your problem drives me nuts that we don't have a fix .
did you check START /All programs ,and see if anything is in the Startup folder .

The first step in the link above requires the winxp cd-rom ! and you left yours home!!

That means the System Registry Hive has become corrupted.

There are two ways to get back up and running. The easy way which doesn't always work, and then there is the hard way.

Easy Way --- Note that this doesn't always work.
When you are booting your system, press the F8 key during the start of the bootup sequence, meaning after it does the Power On Self Test.

Once you press the F8 key, you will be taken to a Menu. Select "Boot Using Last Known Good Configuration".

It will now attempt to load Windows XP using a past set of configuration files.

If that doesn't work, there is the next step....the hard way.
The hard way is same as described in the microsoft link in above post

ok,I have formated quite a few hardrive and a few with a system restore disk ,but don't remember if they had other partitions ,actuall they did have a small 8 meg partition something to do with the recovery .but like i said before a regular install only formats the first partition ,and leaves my backup partition ..

It then gives me an error... "check cable?". I guess I'm screwed, eh?

I was told that if i have xp SP2 my 1.1 usb ports would be upgraded to 2.0, but they wont upgrade. Is this a hardware problem, if not how can i get it to work? And there arent any ? marks or ! marks under the Device Manager.

I think someone fibbed to you ,to the best of my knowlage USB is hardware and a software upgrade isn't goining to change that .

Thanks for responding. After purchasing the laptop, I created two partitions with Partition Magic. Partition E contains non-OS applications and work data; partition F contains storage and some unfinished video work. I'm concerned now that since the "no OS found" message appears, if I have lost the partition markers, or would it be safe to continue with the restore?

Ill go out on a limb and say continue ,it shouldn't bother the other partition ,i don't use partition magic or a system restore disk ,but have two partition and format and reload the os on the first partition all the time ,
try this to be sure that the partition excist .get a win98 boot sik and boot computer and do a DIR f:\ and make sure that the files are there . you can DIR all partition to see what remains .
if you don't have a win98 boot disk get one at HERE it is the one with no ram disk so you won't have to worry about the drive letter change .

Ok... i'm back... deleted/uninstalled VirusScan. (since i have McAfee now...)

I put HJT in it's own folder... along with the new log... (i wasn't sure if i was suppose to post the new log before i fixed anything... but hmm... i guess i'll take that risk)

here's the scan (looks the same as before) :cheesy: WHen it's time, I'll scan it, and "fix checked", then run it in safe mode.

Not sure what you did ,but you would need to fix what i suggested in other post then run hijackthis again after the fix and post a new log .anyother way and it would just be the same as the first log !:(

you could also check for a folder called c:\win98,if i formated and loaded you computer last you would find it there !LOL
EDIT : forget that if it were there the computer would know and not ask you to incert the windows cd .

Hi ,what did you use to create the seperate partition ,moving apps to another partion doesent help as the app would only have to be reinstall anyway .
If you created a partition seperate from the one that had the OS on it with third party software ,and move important data to that partition ,running the system restore disk should not affect that partition I wouldn't think . it should just format and restore to the 1st partition!
Oh yeah ,HP tech are just reading from a book .i know i trained to be one ,but quit after a few days ,good thing to as EDS lost the HP acct to some foregin country anyway .

So SP2 only remove the shourtcuts to these programs and not the program !

i cant tell you to fix the f2 because i don't know ,i think it will be all right to leave it ,but if you want to try and fix it and see if it affect anything that would be ok as hijackthis creates backups so if you fix and something goes wrong you can restore the backup .as for the 016s' you can saftly remove any one or all as they are activex downloads and will download again when you visit that site again. i usually remove all of them just to be safe when im cleaning a customers computer .
