Yahoo shows all backlinks, whether it be Dofollow link or Nofollow link But Google is very selective in this case. Google counts only dofollow links and displays some of those to us.

The best way is to have good content that people will want to link to. You also should become active is many forums and post your website link. Try to get sites with a PR 4 or better to link to you.
Here is a strategy we use with SEO. Join forums and blogs where you can comment. Make sure they have a decent PR and are dofollow. Note that PR does not necessarily mean the link will be good.
For example, the website that has the #1 position and is a Page rank of 1 has lots of sites below it with higher PR. Ask yourself when is a PR 1 better than a PR 4? When it is at the top of search of results. Google's new algorithm will allow this so don't try and think outside of the box.
Also, go slow with the High PRs. Create a profile and make a post. Post a few more times and in 10 go back and insert a few urls in your profile. Sometimes the urls with in the profile will be nofollow and dofollow at the same time.
