A friend gave me a Dell Inspiron 5000 that won't start. Press the start button and the fan starts, there is a short burst of hard drive activity, then about two seconds later, it just stops. The power on light is still green but otherwise no activity. I have to hold the power button down to shut the power off in order to retry. I got the laptop without a hard drive so put in a small spare I had laying around. It worked long enough to load Win2K and download all the service packs but the next morning, it would not restart. Any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it?

Your system might have a bad memory stick or bad dimm slot. Test a stick in both slots.

Thanks for the info Fren. Unless both sticks are gone, it didn't work.

Maybe it's the bios try resetting it by looking for the reset button or try removing the battery and leave for about a hour then try again.
