This looks like a client-side networking/configuration problem on the laptop rather than an account issue. Error 80072efd means the Messenger client cannot make a network connection to the sign-in servers (timeout/refused). Since can sign in from other department machines, focus on the laptop’s local settings — proxies, TCP/IP/Winsock corruption, hosts file entries, or a security product that is blocking traffic. 's firewall suggestion is a good start; expand that checklist below.

Quick diagnostic commands to run from a command prompt (then reboot after the winsock reset):

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset
ping hotmail.com
nslookup hotmail.com
tracert hotmail.com

Configuration checks and quick fixes to try next:

  • In Internet Explorer: Tools → Internet Options → Connections → LAN Settings — ensure “Use a proxy server” isn’t set unless your university requires it (if it does, get the exact proxy/auth settings from IT).
  • Open C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and verify there are no entries redirecting MSN/Hotmail/Passport.
  • Temporarily disable any antivirus/web-filtering or third‑party firewall (and the Windows firewall) and retry.
  • Confirm system date/time is correct (SSL services will fail if the clock is far off).
  • Boot into Safe Mode with Networking to see if a third‑party app is the cause.

If those steps fail, collect simple network evidence to hand to campus IT: output of ipconfig /all, nslookup results, and a tracert to the Hotmail/MSN host; also note exactly when the sign-in fails and the error code. University networks sometimes block the messaging ports (MSN uses dedicated messaging ports with HTTP fallback), so IT may need to open or proxy those services.
