My mainboard is a micro-star model MS-6382, I've installed the driver for this...but have no sound...when I check in sound/audio it says the sound card is a mpu-401.

Where do I get a driver for this??

Cheers ;-)

Do you have a sound card installed, or are you using the integrated audio on the motherboard. If you are using the integrated audion, on the motherboard, then you should have the driver for it on the motherboard setup disk. You may have to look on the CD for the driver. Also look in the BIOS setup, and see if it is set there.

Hi, thanks for the reply...

Its actually my dads computer, he messed it all up with viruses etc which resulted in a lot of files being corrupted...therefore I put a new clean install in of windows...

He bought the comp 'ready' made so to speak and did have sound before the new install...so I guess he must have a sound card!!

I have got sisoftware (sandra), which I also installed on my dads comp, he emailed the info from the mainboard and also the sound card info but it doesn't list a sound card, just the MPU-401...

What makes it worse is that my dad lives in Cheshire and I am in Blackpool, over an hour away so its kinda hard talking him through it!!!!! lol...

Can you give me the run through of checking in the bios please (if you know of hand) else I will have to check mine in order to give him step by step instructions...he was trying to flash it the other day !!!!

Should of added....he has no discs for the comp, so thats why I got one of the net...

Wow! This will be difficult without knowing whether there is a seperate sound card, or integrated. Have your dad download Everest, I listed a bunch of programs below, that will help him with virus and spyware problems. Everest will give him an abundance of information about his computer. What operating system is he using? I guess we should start with the simple things to check, until we know more about his computer.

1. Is his speakers plugged in the correct jack, and power cord plugged in, with speakers turned on and volume turned up?

2. Is the volume turned up, or muted, on the speaker icon, in the lower right hand corner, of the task bar?

3. In the Device Manager, is there a yellow exclamation point, or a red X, next to the sound device?

4. In the Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices, does he have his settings correct?

5. In the BIOS, if he is using the integrated sound on his motherboard, is it disabled, and if he uses a seperate sound card, does he have the integrated sound activated? To get into the BIOS, he will need to hold down either the DEL, F1, F2, or ESC key. Check Integrated Peripherals for the sound device.

I just thought of another thing, make sure he has all his windows updates, to include DirectX, and maybe Windows Media Player.

I just thought of another thing, make sure he has all his windows updates, to include DirectX, and maybe Windows Media Player.

I've sent him the DirectX app, he said he has installed quick time player (is it called that?!! I don't rate it myself!)

Not heard from him since I sent him the DirectX...so no idea if its working now!

Thanks for your help ;-)

Hi ;-)

I have partioned the hdd an installed winxp pro on it...so no viruses, corrupted files etc now..

I also installed adaware pro, ad-watch, spybot, zone alarm, pestpatrol, spysubtract, registry mechanic, advanced ststem optimizer, CWShredder and norton systemworks...so hopefully nothing will get in now!!!!! (I learnt the hard way many years ago!!!!)

Everything is plugged in correctly (I did all that when I were down...but I had to get back for kids from school, hence the reason not everything was installed!!)

Device manager - I don't think he is going to the right place when I talk him through it!! Will try again with him!!

Bios - I'm scared of letting him back in there...last time he were flashing it !! Luckily though he rang me part way through and I talked him through it and it seems ok !!

If the DirectX install hasn't worked I think I'll have to go back down and sort it !

Thanks so much for your help ;-)

The latest DirextX is on the windows update. Have him do all his updates, he can find them at:IE/Tools menu/Windows Update. Gee, I wish you wouldn't have put Norton on there, you should have put on a free antivirus, like AVG Free. Oh well, too late now. In my opinion, Norton is such a resource hog, it creates more problems than it is worth.
