i have genuine win xp pro ed sp2 installed in my system. Earlier whenever i used to connect to the internet, windows updates got downloaded automatically but now no updates are being downloaded. I have ckecked my firewall (zonealarm) settings and it seems to be fine.
i also have another problem, earlier i could set windows update settings to automatic or manual (control pannel->windows update) but now i cant even edit those settings as all of them are now in a non selectable state.

tried that too but dosent work...
Hey May be the Automatic windows update service is disabled.
go to run,type services.msc.
In the right pane of the window see locate Automatic windows update,
right click and select properties. Now enable the service and set it to
automatic. Hope this helps

windows update has also largely been replaced by microsoft update, which does office etc.... as well
you can switch to MS update + update manually here:
