I'm sorry, I can't reproduce this problem. I tried deleting your avatar, then re-uploading it. I also tried deleting my own avatar, then re-uploading it. It left birthdays intact?? Can anyone else duplicate this??

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hmm, this is strange. Let me try changing it for you and see if it works.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Jim, I look at it from the perspective of a content producer who sells advertising. I wonder if the reason for the decrease in airtime also has to do with an increase in special effects, CGI, etc., which all significantly add to production costs per minute. I'm really into sci-fi dramas, and nowadays we're getting some prime time TV series close to theater-quality special effects.

According to Neilsen, while a larger percentage of adults watch TV year over year, a shrinking percentage of youth watch TV, as shows increasingly must compete for eyeballs against the Internet.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Would you watch that channel? Guess what.. No one else will either. That means no revenue. No business. No channel.

It exists. It's called QVC and HSN.

The Forums page (the first item in the footer toolbar) has gotten a huge overhaul today that hopefully will make it a lot more useful ... plus it brings back a bit of nostalgia from our vBulletin days.

Enjoy. And let me know thoughts.

Even if it's your site, if you don't want anyone to see it, don't put it on the Internet, or else it might get cached by Googlebot, Archive.org, etc.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Amazingly awesome.

It looks like the cause was the Chrome/webkit-specific CSS property

So I think I finally figured this bad boy out. Yes? No? Testers?

Why would we do your homework assignment for you?? And telling us that we need to do it within the next 30 minutes is not going to motivate us, either. Show us what you've tried so far and what, specifically, you need help with. We're here to help.

Now if only people would realize that Googlebot doesn't see our forum signatures!

Yeah I read about this on Mashable earlier today.

Just stumbled across this thread for the first time in awhile. Nice to reminisce about how things get their start around here.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Social media???

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I take it they're not still in the recycle bin, eh? (Wishful thinking)

I can't really suggest any software, but I would suggest to you to IMMEDIATELY STOP using your computer!

When you delete files, they don't actually leave the hard drive. Instead, the pointers to where they are in memory gets deleted, freeing up the space. Recovery software is able to restore pointers to data that is floating around in the hard drive with no address. That's all said and good, but in the meantime, the space is now freed up for new files. This means every second you use your computer, manipulating files, there is a potential for new files to overwrite the deleted files, making them unrecoverable.

A giant happy holidays to all DaniWeb members!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Huh?? What are you trying to do? Using a for loop? I'm incredibly confused. Is this a homework assignment?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

What about it?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Penguin is related to spammy backlinks, Panda is thin content. In Google Webmaster Tools, do you have any messages saying that there were manual spam actions taken?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

No, in order to do what you are describing, you need to implement a server-side 301 redirect. Adding that bit of HTML code tells Google that both pages are the same and which one is your preferred version, but it doesn't actually go the extra mile and redirect the website visitor to the preferred version.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

DaniWeb uses CodeIgniter 2.x, as do a handful of other people here, so any questions that you may have I'm sure we can help with. I don't know anyone using CodeIgniter 3 as it's still under active development and not production-ready.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hi,

I'm able to reproduce issue #2 on DaniWeb but not on a vanilla standalone version of the editor. The problem has something to do with my implementation. I will investigate.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The rules you mention are pretty typical for publishing content on the web. They are not unlike our own terms, which we update as well from time to time to reflect changes in our community. It's not done to deceive anyone. It's done to preserve the integrity of the community through changing times.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Warrens, I've noticed a big improvement in your attitude. What was it that AD said to you?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

When you create the login cookie, simply specify an expire time loooong into the future if the remember me checkbox is ticked.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I've upgraded the Markdown editor that we use to the latest version. Please let me know if anything isn't working.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The solution to what? Huh??

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member
Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

it would be better if there were an options of using Emotion Icons to express things in your massage or chat field

Initially, there were no emoticons on the forums simply because getting the Markdown parser to work was a tough job and I didn't want to make my life any more complicated, so it got back-burnered. However, as time went on, I realized that no one really missed it, so that's why it's stayed away.

I'm not subtle... for those who understand English. ;)

Umm ... yeah :-P

Mobile version (Android at least) has no indicator about have I responded to these threads? Have they received more posts since I last looked?

Mobile mode doesn't, but tablet mode does. In mobile mode, there's a link at the bottom of every page to toggle into tablet mode.

I've mentioned the UI before - rectabgles/squares and rounded edges and round avatars (sometimes).

What can I say, I like it ;) Show me something better and I'll consider it.

Possibly an opt out system for the social media block - this takes a looong time to load.

I hear ya on that ... I'm in the process of switching over to using the APIs to create our own native widgets that aren't so javascript heavy full of tracking pixels.

Ability to do a search on 'my posts'

I'll look into it, but this probably won't be implemented until some other …

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

"Meta" in nature? Oh, you're not subtle at all, Mike.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, it's currently a known "bug" that it beeps when you switch tabs. I have bug in quotes because it is considered low priority to fix. (The reason being that the code says to beep everytime messages are sent to the browser, and when you launch the chat room the first time or switch tabs, messages are sent to the browser ... in the form of existing chat history.) It should only beep upon a new message or switching tabs. Does it beep any other times?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Time once again to ask that question: What could I be doing better?

More specifically, I'm looking to answer the following:

  • Is the UI clear and concise? Is it easy to get around? Is there too much clutter? Are all the features you need/use/want easily accessible?
  • What features do you use on other sites? What other sites / forums do you frequent?
Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

A blank screen is typically due to a PHP fatal error, such as a parse error.

Try putting

        error_reporting(E_ALL);
        ini_set('display_errors', '1');

at the top of the PHP document, and it should print out what the error messages are.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

And, yes, that post is just junk.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Just saw this now. It's a fine line when it comes to giving mods too much freedom, which caused lots of growing pains for us in the past. And thanks so much Linda!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks for the note. Bug fixed :)

You're a sponsor, and there was an SQL bug where it wasn't able to find people likely to be able to help you with that particular question, whom it should send a PM to notifying them.

Hi there and welcome. Any friend of veedeoo is a friend of mine! :-P

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Because when some text is centered and some isn't, then the eye has to start jumping all around the page to look for the next line to read.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Signatures are designed to not take away from the more important posts. We used to allow images, multiple fonts, the ability to center, etc., and it was all just a huge distraction.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The idea is to create a product that is easy-to-use right from the start, but can "grow with you" and the more time you invest, the more features and functionality you can discover, without it being overwhelming or requiring a learning curve to figure out how to post.

As you said, everything works together in harmony, including our code snippets. Simply drill down into the forum category you're interested in, and you'll be presented with a single timeline of everything relevant to that category. You can optionally filter by type.

Hi there!!! Thanks for joining our little crew.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I change my answer. After spending over an hour a couple of weeks ago hanging out with Bruce investigating DaniWeb's traffic decrease, he made some suggestions that caused a near-instant improvement.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks for the news! I'll be following this closely, as DaniWeb is based on CI.

Keep in mind we're, for the most part, talking about receiving four emails a year here. Certainly that's a steal considering all of the resources that it costs us to email you all the stuff you want to receive.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The receivers of these emails are selected based on many factors, including posting history to the relevant forum category, and the reputation metrics (rep, up-votes, post quality, etc..).

We actually take it a few steps further than that. The benefit to the sponsors is that by donating, we will select five people that are highly likely to be able to help you. This means that they have received endorsements for the relevant forum, have received reputation (upvotes, etc) for their posts within the relevant forum, but also we do natural language search to find folks who have answered similar questions previously and have very recently logged into the site, and are determined to be more likely to log back in upon receiving a notification email.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You can choose to browse the forums and post and not receive email. However, a free service comes with advertising in order to sustain it. If you want opt-in to receive email from us such as our community newsletter, then you have to also choose to accept the occassional message from our sponsors as well.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

How many of those emails have you actually received matrixdevuk?

I can answer that. He received one.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, it is a form of advertising. By giving value to our sponsors, that's how we make money, after all, and how we keep the service free for everyone to use :)

You can opt out by going into your member profile and unchecking "Receive Occasional Community-related Email?". However, not only will you no longer receive these types of messages from us, but you'll also no longer receive any email from us, such as the monthly community newsletter, etc.
