Jim, I look at it from the perspective of a content producer who sells advertising. I wonder if the reason for the decrease in airtime also has to do with an increase in special effects, CGI, etc., which all significantly add to production costs per minute. I'm really into sci-fi dramas, and nowadays we're getting some prime time TV series close to theater-quality special effects.

According to Neilsen, while a larger percentage of adults watch TV year over year, a shrinking percentage of youth watch TV, as shows increasingly must compete for eyeballs against the Internet.

Would you watch that channel? Guess what.. No one else will either. That means no revenue. No business. No channel.

I can't really suggest any software, but I would suggest to you to IMMEDIATELY STOP using your computer!

When you delete files, they don't actually leave the hard drive. Instead, the pointers to where they are in memory gets deleted, freeing up the space. Recovery software is able to restore pointers to data that is floating around in the hard drive with no address. That's all said and good, but in the meantime, the space is now freed up for new files. This means every second you use your computer, manipulating files, there is a potential for new files to overwrite the deleted files, making them unrecoverable.

No, in order to do what you are describing, you need to implement a server-side 301 redirect. Adding that bit of HTML code tells Google that both pages are the same and which one is your preferred version, but it doesn't actually go the extra mile and redirect the website visitor to the preferred version.

DaniWeb uses CodeIgniter 2.x, as do a handful of other people here, so any questions that you may have I'm sure we can help with. I don't know anyone using CodeIgniter 3 as it's still under active development and not production-ready.

I'm able to reproduce issue #2 on DaniWeb but not on a vanilla standalone version of the editor. The problem has something to do with my implementation. I will investigate.

The rules you mention are pretty typical for publishing content on the web. They are not unlike our own terms, which we update as well from time to time to reflect changes in our community. It's not done to deceive anyone. It's done to preserve the integrity of the community through changing times.

Initially, there were no emoticons on the forums simply because getting the Markdown parser to work was a tough job and I didn't want to make my life any more complicated, so it got back-burnered. However, as time went on, I realized that no one really missed it, so that's why it's stayed away.

Mobile mode doesn't, but tablet mode does. In mobile mode, there's a link at the bottom of every page to toggle into tablet mode.

Yes, it's currently a known "bug" that it beeps when you switch tabs. I have bug in quotes because it is considered low priority to fix. (The reason being that the code says to beep everytime messages are sent to the browser, and when you launch the chat room the first time or switch tabs, messages are sent to the browser ... in the form of existing chat history.) It should only beep upon a new message or switching tabs. Does it beep any other times?

Time once again to ask that question: What could I be doing better?

• Is the UI clear and concise? Is it easy to get around? Is there too much clutter? Are all the features you need/use/want easily accessible?
• What features do you use on other sites? What other sites / forums do you frequent?

A blank screen is typically due to a PHP fatal error, such as a parse error.

Try putting

        error_reporting(E_ALL);
        ini_set('display_errors', '1');

at the top of the PHP document, and it should print out what the error messages are.

And, yes, that post is just junk.

Signatures are designed to not take away from the more important posts. We used to allow images, multiple fonts, the ability to center, etc., and it was all just a huge distraction.

The idea is to create a product that is easy-to-use right from the start, but can "grow with you" and the more time you invest, the more features and functionality you can discover, without it being overwhelming or requiring a learning curve to figure out how to post.

As you said, everything works together in harmony, including our code snippets. Simply drill down into the forum category you're interested in, and you'll be presented with a single timeline of everything relevant to that category. You can optionally filter by type.

Keep in mind we're, for the most part, talking about receiving four emails a year here. Certainly that's a steal considering all of the resources that it costs us to email you all the stuff you want to receive.

The receivers of these emails are selected based on many factors, including posting history to the relevant forum category, and the reputation metrics (rep, up-votes, post quality, etc..).

We actually take it a few steps further than that. The benefit to the sponsors is that by donating, we will select five people that are highly likely to be able to help you. This means that they have received endorsements for the relevant forum, have received reputation (upvotes, etc) for their posts within the relevant forum, but also we do natural language search to find folks who have answered similar questions previously and have very recently logged into the site, and are determined to be more likely to log back in upon receiving a notification email.

You can choose to browse the forums and post and not receive email. However, a free service comes with advertising in order to sustain it. If you want opt-in to receive email from us such as our community newsletter, then you have to also choose to accept the occassional message from our sponsors as well.
