I'm attaching this file as an attached .zip. From now on, do that instead of pointing users to off-site files, because what inevitably happens is a few months down the line you take them off of your server for whatever reason, and then this tutorial gets broken.

I think it's incredibly optimistic that, even offering a very substantial prize, to expect more than a few entries in a programming competition. Just look at the blog competition - there was only one blogger and he was an existing member. In general, competitions are a great tool to use to motivate existing members, and can even lure the occasional lurker, but they certainly don't have the potential to draw in any brand new people. That's just the nature of forum competitions.

That aside, however, assuming the overly-optimistic value of 5 or 10 contributions to a coding competition, the same problem would exist in the judging.

Even that aside, you have to appreciate the business aspects related to the competition. The purpose of a competition would be to better DaniWeb in some way - this means that the value received would need to at least break even with the amount spend on the prize in addition to the amount of time spent running the contest.

At this point, DaniWeb receives 100,000 visitors daily, give or take 20,000 depending upon what day of the week it is. A few thousand extra visitors (even if they all became regular members) aren't capable of generating more than ten bucks and certainly wouldn't be reason to hand out a prize worth thousands.

The blogging competition worked because it had nothing to do with the actual members who participated but instead was focused around getting our content syndicated. The advantages to …

I'm not entirely sure how this is gonna work though. For example, comments in c++ is preceded by a // whereas in vb.net comments are preceded by a '.

Anyway I'm sure you've already thought of this though, otherwise you wouldn't have suggested it.

That's already all figured out. It's just a matter of what colors to use where. What about php default syntax highlighting colors?

The other day, I was talking with a salesguy from The Tribune about a full page ad advertising my new bowling alley. There were a whole bunch of changes that needed to be made, and I was going over them all with the guy. Part of the ad was a bulleted list of all of the things we have ... sports bar, party rooms, billiard room, arcade, pro shop, and so forth. One of the specific things on the list read, "Birthday Parties for Kids." My grandma, who was looking over my shoulder, said, "The party rooms aren't just for kids, they're really for everybody. We shouldn't just limit ourselves to kids parties. Let's add another bullet that says 'Adult Parties'", and she got the salesguy who spoke in broken English to add it to the mock-up before I started going, "nonononono!." If I wasn't there it would have made for some risque bowling alley!

Well, here's what happened. After the Sims 2 completely froze on me, and everything was unresponsive, I was forced to hard reboot. Upon reentering Windows, things started appearing very flaky. I then found I had bad RAM. It got worse from there. After an unbelievably bad experience with customer support, my one week Alienware machine was sent back.

Hey there. Long time no speak. It's still in the works ... yes, still. The latest news is that all of the bowling alley lanes got put in and all the flooring got put in. But it was done wrong (the wrong type of wood, where it wasn't going to pass inspection). So AMF had to fly a whole new crew out to rip up all of the lanes and put new lanes down. Which is what they're doing as we speak.

What do you consider "ethical SEO"? What types of general techniques do you use? (No need to be specific or anything here.) The only reason I ask is because everyone has their own definitions of black hat, white hat, ethical, not-so-ethical, etc. :)

When is it appropriate to use InnoDB table types? What about for a forum such as this one with huge post and thread and memberlist tables? I was reading on dev.mysql.com that it is more efficient than MyISAM for large table types? Is this always the case? Would it make sense to mix and match MyISAM and InnoDB table types in my database based on the number of rows in the table?

Here's the deal. Google keeps track of IPs of sites in its engine. Sites with the same IP are typically on the same server. If this is a shared server, the sites might not have a lot in common other than using the same hosting company. But if this is a dedicated server, especially if the sites link to each other, Google assumes they are run by the same person and part of the same network. Therefore, a backlink doesn't count as much as it ordinarily might - it counts more like a backlink from one page of the same site to another.

The problem is that the search engines don't know whether an IP is to a shared or dedicated server. This can be a problem when another site that might be hosted on the same IP as you does some black hat SEO or something to get it banned. It's very possible that your site might also inadvertently get banned.

Hence why it's a good thing to have your own IP :)

Luckily, forums work well with viral marketing and word of mouth marketing (WOM). The reason for this is because they are already deep in the heart of online community building, which is what online viral marketing is all about. Sites get mentioned in other forums, in blogs, in newsgroups ... in other communities. Eventually word spreads pretty quickly among online cliques and networks. :) Most forum goers participate in multiple forums on a same topic, so much of the community remains the same between sites. Did that make any sense at all?

Web design is definitely art. It takes knowledge of which colors are easier on the eyes, aesthetics, defining a site's "atmosphere" based on the way it looks, and even a lot of graphic marketing! I.e. the design has to sell the product the website is trying to sell :)

Hey guys. As you may or may not know, we're currently running a donation drive. With the increasing traffic coming to DaniWeb, we're currently investigating the idea of actually purchasing a second dedicated server, so that we can have one server for Apache/PHP and another server for MySQL. Currently, a donation entitles you to numerous community benefits. However, I have been toying with the idea of an ad-free version of the site. I am just looking basically for a rough estimate of whether this would be worth it. Thanks!

OS X is built on top of BSD. As far as I know, the file system (journaled HFS+) coupled with OS X does not need to be defragmented - it is a process that happens automatically in the background. Perhaps others can clarify?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Unfortunately Apple decided that there is enough support out for OS X nowadays that OS9 is not needed. But that isn't necessarily so if you're one of those who runs a lot of old classic apps. If you have Jaguar installed with OS9, you can upgrade to Panther while keeping your OS9 intact.

Otherwise, if you did a fresh install of Panther, you should still be able to install OS9 off of your Jaguar cd.
