Somehow the technical difficulties have changed the stars into Tuxes. Yuck. :P
I recommend you switch over to PHP. It might be a step back for you that you have to learn it, but at the end you'll be more efficient. I can type fast right now and I never took a typing lesson. I know that if I did, at first, I will be typing a little slower learning the correct method and trying to get used to it, but I know once I learn the correct method, I'll be typing a helluvalot faster.
Anyways, I have several reasons. The first one traces back to the birth of Perl. When conceived, Perl was not meant to be a web language. Was not meant to handle processes like web application servers, was not meant to handle sessions, database connections, etc... etc.... PHP is a combination of the best features in C, Perl, and Unix utilities all combined to tackle web applications. Now it's true that you can pretty much do anything PHP can do in Perl, but it has to be extended. By that I mean you have to create your own modules or get them from an outside source like CPAN. The more you extend the language, the more overhead you add. It's not like PHP, where these tasks are already built into the language. Built in functions, as you know already, can be faster and help you develop faster.
I think you'll be able to develop faster in PHP too. I don't know about you, but I've seen …
Hi. I'm in a Java class at harvard...
But a while is a loop. This is a Harvard teacher?
Then the teacher is whacked.
I don't see how someone can tell you to write something efficient without a loop (in this language anyways). Another way to do it besides recursion is to create a label and jump to it if your language supports it. (Kind of like Basic's GOTO.) Jumps are used more in lower level languages like assembly. This seems to be a higher level one, so a jump wouldn't be the best way but it would work.
If you're really paranoid, I suggest you try more than one Antivirus. I've tried AVG, McAfee, and several other free and cheaper Antiviruses. In my opinion, none of them were as good as Norton. (The rest seemed to miss a few rare viruses.) Also, Norton does a good job at scanning, and can constantly scan (the other can too, but not as good I think). I don't think it sucks as much resources as you say. It is a big program compared to the other ones though, so I see your point. If you have 32 Megs of RAM, then it would be a problem though.
Also, try another firewall like Tiny or BlackIce.
Nasty thing. I've never heard of it. I have a few lists of common processes that run on Windows and it doesn't appear. Also did a search, and nothing.
What Windows do you have? I say get a better AntiVirus like Norton (I've never been a fan of McAfee) Make sure it's up to date. Have you searched your registry to see if it's being called from there? Also, for now, try putting an empty file in that directory where it copies to and name it isle.exe. Make it readonly and hidden so it doesn't try to copy itself there and try to overwrite. But who knows, the trojan or virus you got might be smart.
Also, try to open the exe file in notepad and see if you can find any readable words that might help your search.
Where is this CGI script? Is this your own server or do you have a service provider? I know that you can configure servers and even devices(routers, etc) to reject and redirect people from certain IP addresses and only accept a range. Maybe it's that. You might want to talk to whoever runs the server. Also make sure that your service provider (if you're using one) doesn't appened additional source code at the top of your page. For example, in this case, it can check subdomains. I doubt that's the case, but you never know. Make sure you don't have a virus too. There could be a virus that corrupts Internet Explorer so it has problems creating cookies(could become corrupt). If you're having trouble creating cookies, and your login script relies on them, then as a default it could send you to yahoo.com.
Almost all the teachers I know only know theory stuff, and no real world stuff. It's a shame. :(
Sounds like a good idea, but nothing tooooooo heavy, I hope ;-)
Doesn't have to be tome or anything. Just something simple. Sometimes I read posts, mostly on other forums, and wonder if people have ever posted on a forum before.
I don't know about you or anyone else here, but I tend not to help people on purpose when their post says: I haven't tried to do this problem or solve it. I just want a fast and correct solution and don't want to waste my time because I have better things to do. You on the other hand do. So do it for me.
Now, I'm not like that for everything that I get asked. It all depends on the question. If the solution requires thought, then at least I'd like to at least see some effort. I'm not a snob. But then again, I'm not stupid.
I don't think that is needed, for the simple fact that people can learn off from posts the users use to help the user in need of help
People would learn even more if they at least tried to do it themselves first. Even if they failed at it, they would learn what not to do, and this would be shown on their post by saying what they tried.
people can just lie and say they tryed to look it up, what good will that do ?
Well, when I need help for something that requires thought, like algorithmic, I list what I have tried. Even show some code if I can and pinpoint where I'm stuck at. I think you are right though. You can't stop people from lying. I think it all depends on who posts the …
Dani, I think you need to create a sticky post of guidelines before posting. Maybe have it on every forum. This is for the people that put up homework assignments (or any other type for that matter) and want a quick answer without even trying. This forum is about learning, not about doing some else's dirty work.
Yeah, it used to be free. He recently updated his page, and I do mean just recently.
Yeah. Hey, you can't blame the guy for trying to make a living. 8)
I know more than one. 8) Here are some free programs I rely on a lot:

I offer no pay as of yet
Looks like someone wants cheap labor. Not interested either. I'm looking for something more stable, pays at least $45 an hour, and low risk. This seems to have none of that. (There's too much of a chance in your position. You use the word "chance" five times which makes me wonder.) Sorry. I said cheap labor because I see this all the time. People approach me with the same idea. They see I do good work and want to hire me. Then they offer little or no pay for me to do their dirty work. They say, "ooh, it'll take off, and we'll hit the jackpot!" It's all a stereotype young adults receive, especially while they're in school. Of course, after I hear their offer, I brush them off like a bad case of fleas.
This job might be good for amateurs, who can get paid $12 an hour or so with a little C++ they picked up in school, but someone with those qualifications (the ones you asked) knows better to ask for more.
Also, England is a pretty long walk from where I live.
Here are a few of my other favorite quotes that people say when they want to hire me:
"It'll be a good experience for you!"
"Don't you want to be challenged?"
"It'll look good on your resume!"
"You'll have more to show on your portfolio!"
I think there are …
So far so good. I'll let you know if I find anything fruity.
I agree with Dani. Try using the applet version. Depending how new the computer is, it will work (you might have to download a plugin for the Applet or even install a newer version of IE - just do it while they're not looking ;) ). If you're really desperate, you can try going to ftp.aol.com and see if they have older versions of AIM. What you're trying to do with the CD I think used to work with older versions. Even if it was on CD, AIM used to write temp files to the hard drive. Give it a shot if you're desperate. ;)
If you REALLY need your AIM then you can go to most libraries and use it. Just be prepared to have some web page up with complicated diagrams and text that you can ALT-TAB to when a library person walks by. 8)
Try going into DOS and renaming the file. I remember in Windows 95/98 if you put extended ASCII characters in filenames Windows would have a fit if you try to delete them. Usually, when you create a file in Windows, it doesn't let you put extended characters in your file names, but you could do it in DOS. I used to go into DOS, go to the C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP directory of my friend's computer and create a file with the name "hey you" - but the space in between wasn't a space (ASCII CHAR #20) it was (ASCII CHAR #255), inserted by holding down the ALT button and typing in 255 on the number pad. The only way on earth you could delete a file like that was if you formatted the HD, or deleted the folder it was in or go into DOS and renamed the file, then deleted it through Windows or DOS. Hehe... you couldn't move the file to any folder even the Recycle bin. If you tried to move it to a folder, it would have weird side effects, like the folder becoming the name of the file. You couldn't rename it or delete it.
I don't know if this might be your problem, but it sounds very similar. It's also a neat way to scare your friends.
I assume you are all talking about the best overall language? In my opinion there simple is none. Even the concept of being the best is unclear. Best what? Best syntax? Best speed? Best cost effectiveness? Best learning curve? Best extensibility? Best reliability? Judging something like syntax and learning curve is like judging which is better: vanilla or strawberry. Take your pick.
It all depends on your situation. Simple as that. There are different tools for different jobs. Not one single language/framework is good in every single aspect. And that's actually a good thing sometimes because since there are so many technologies out there for us to use, we can pick and choose what we want to suit our needs. For example, every time I ask one of my clients what software/language/tools I should write their applications in, the first thing they say is Microsoft. I personally have no problem with Microsoft, nor hate them, but as soon as I give them a chart of their initial expenses, they tend to freak out. Then I start going over open source solutions. At the end, because it's me that will be developing the software and not them, they don't mind me going with open source solutions because of cost. Now mind you that these are for small to midly medium sized companies. When it comes to companies that already have a good source of capital, it works a little different because they can afford to spend (more money on software …
Very nicely done. You should set up a test account so they don't have to sign up. I just started creating an outlook clone because I rely on outlook so much. Trying to actually read Outlook PST files will be the final touch. What would be cool is if I create a desktop version of it and have it synchronize with the web one. Maybe export as XML.
The problem is I'm not getting that many visitors (55 in the first 3 days).
It's only been 3 days. That's not much time. Unless you were mass marketing, and your site was on all the major search engines, and had ad space on high trafic web sites, maybe THEN you could expect more.
I think you picked a very hard theme for your web site. Why should people go to your site when they got downloads.com, tucows.com, and jumbo.com? If you want to compete, then you have to offer some extra, preferably unique. Maybe articles or tech news. A better eye-catching layout wouldn't hurt either.
Here's a website promotion tutorial:
http://www.apromotionguide.com/
Also, why do you have a link to Warez? This link automatically, in my book, cheapens and degrades any site trying to be legal. I assume you are trying to stay legal because you state on your site:
"All our programs are freeware. If you find a program here not suitable for this purpose, please contact us here."
and have copyrights on "Apps of the Web."
Why not just pay someone else to do it with all your money?
Have you considered using other technologies to make games for the browser? VRML/3DML? Flash/Director? The best SDK/Engine I've seen to make games so they run on the browser has been stuff by WildTanget. Phenomenal stuff. I downloaded the SDK, but haven't had the time to play around with it.
Just so you see what the WildTanget engine is capable of:

I don't know how you can write a game with a web language that wasn't designed to handles graphics, and by that I mean game graphics, like switching into vga mode, having access to graphics api, etc. I mean, obviously it's doable, but I don't see it taking off. Then again, I could be dead wrong because I haven't see the game.
I know a few phrases, that's about it. I was thinking about taking a course at Hofstra on it.
Cool. I wish I could speak an Asian language. The only languages I can speak are Spanish and French... oh yeah, and English of course. 8)
Oh ok. laoli, do you know what it means?
you referred to this word several times , so what does that mean?
And now I ask you: what do the Chinese (?) characters on your avatar mean? Is it your name? It's not something like "The Sex Machine" is it? I hope not. 8)
Was it your first and native language? Were you and are you exposed to it a lot? If so, of course it's going to be your language of preference. You understand it more so you can see the beauty of it. The same thing goes with anything else.
Some people find beauty in math. I guess it's those thick glasses that make it visible to them because I sure as heck don't see it. ;)
Funny how the general male population bestows such flirtatious values upon any woman in the vicinity, without any thought. I'm not saying I'm an exception, I just find it funny. =P
I couldn't agree with you more. Even more so because Dani uses her picture as a profile, which brings even more attraction. ;) When's the last time another guy on this forum got complimented the way Dani does for anything? Hehe. It's all good though.
Here's a tip for getting fast results in a forum (when you post any sort of question). Make the accountname a girl's name. Something like Allison, Amber, or Jennifer. Post with that name and act very naive. See how fast you get responses. Nice ones too! You'll never get something like RTFM or be called a troll (popular insult in the slashdot community). It's all social psychology. Most males, studies show, in most cases, act better and are more helpful to women than men. I think we can all agree on that.
I think there should be a large array of magazines and books. Heck, throw in there a computer with internet access and a mini fridge while we're at it.
I wouldn't watch movies though. Last thing I want to do is stay in there for over two hours watching a movie like Forrest Gump or something.
It'd be cool if they put TVs in bathroom. Come on, you wouldn't watch TV in there? You all know you would if there was a TV in front of you.
That's one of the weirdest requests I've ever seen from anyone. :P
Will there be arcade machines? If you're going to shell out for one, shell out for Street Fighter 3. I love that arcade game. I own in that game. 8)
Will they serve beer? 8)
I've always wondered how someone would control their super powers. I can understand controlling flight. Even super speed. But super strength, I think would be hard to control, especially when you're angry.
Dan, I like your idea better, because knowing me I'd forget to give it water and sunlight and kill the money tree within a week and then look where I'd be! Then again, pockets aren't always the greatest fashion statement either ;)
Yeah I know what you mean. That plant in your dorm room was dying for water. And you left it next to the heater too!
Pockets aren't always in fashion? What are you talking about? The only time pockets would look bad on someone is if they were naked. Yeah, naked with pockets.
Ok how about this. A magic glove that when you put it on, everything you touched turned into diamond/platinum/gold. Just make sure you do not go to the bathroom with it.
Telekinesis would be a different ability all together. Oh yeah, how could everyone forget the best ability of all... being able to see through clothes!
Or have a magical pocket that contains infinite $100 dollar bills.
Also, a nice ability is to get "yes" for answer, no matter what you ask and want.
Yeah I know. I went with metamorphosis. Think of how many people you can mess with and get away with it. 8)
What super power would you most likely want?
Ooh I like. I was actually thinking of doing something like this a long time ago. I used to write a lot of poems in high school so this is definitely something I could've used back then.

PHTML is the first extention used in the PHP family. I believe .phtml was commonly used around PHP v2, since the next installment in the family of extentions was .php3. After .php3 finally came the dictator of the PHP extentions, .php!
What does that have to do with ADP pages? Not being a smart ass. Just wondering.
Go here for more information about ADP pages:
Yeah I know. I'm not sure if AOL uses that open source server. Maybe they use a suped up version of it. But in any case, it supports Tcl. You can embed Tcl in ADP (AOL Dynamic Pages) like PHP.
